Just 15 Extra Minutes of Sleep Is Linked to Brain Benefits in Young People

We know sleep quality is vital for good health, that adolescence is an important time for brain development, and that teens don't always get a huge amount of sleep – and new research gives us some fresh insights into how that all fits together.
With data for 3,222 adolescents between the ages of 9 and 14 years of age, researchers from institutions in China and the UK split the cohort up into three groups: those with the worst sleep habits (averaging 7 hours, 10 minutes per night), those with the best sleep habits (7 hours, 25 minutes), and those in between (7 hours, 21 minutes).
While there wasn't much difference between these groups in terms of academic achievement, the best sleepers showed noticeable improvements in cognitive tests for reading, problem solving, and focus, compared to the worst sleepers.
"Even though the differences in the amount of sleep that each group got was relatively small, at just over a quarter-of-an-hour between the best and worst sleepers, we could still see differences in brain structure and activity and in how well they did at tasks," says clinical neuropsychologist Barbara Sahakian from the University of Cambridge.
"This drives home to us just how important it is to have a good night's sleep at this important time in life."
The group of young people who slept the longest per night was also observed to have the largest brain volumes, the lowest heart rates, and the highest levels of brain connectivity, compared to the other groups.
Somewhat worryingly, most of the young people fell into the group with the poorest set of sleep data: 39 percent of the total. The middle group had 24 percent of the participants in it, while the group that scored highest on sleep made up 37 percent of the kids.
The research isn't enough to prove cause and effect when it comes to sleep and brain function, and it's worth noting that the cognitive differences between the groups weren't huge – but taken with other similar studies, it adds to the evidence that young brains need to be protected by sleep, and that every minute counts.
"Although our study can't answer conclusively whether young people have better brain function and perform better at tests because they sleep better, there are a number of studies that would support this idea," says psychologist Qing Ma from Fudan University in China.
Other pieces of research have gone into plenty of detail about how sleep is linked to mental well-being and physical health, and this latest study is a reminder to teens and parents to maybe spend a few minutes less on mobile devices.
"Regularly getting a good night's sleep is important in helping us function properly," says Sahakian.
"While we know a lot about sleep in adulthood and later life, we know surprisingly little about sleep in adolescence, even though this is a crucial time in our development."
The research has been published in Cell Reports.

A new study has found that eating three or more servings of French fries a week could increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. An international team of researchers, including an expert from the University of Cambridge, investigated links between potato consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Overall they found a 20% increased risk for those who ate French fries at least three times a week, but not for those who ate baked, boiled or mashed potatoes. Dr Faye Riley, from Diabetes UK, said: "This research shows that the link between potatoes and type 2 diabetes isn't as clear-cut as it might seem." Academics analysed data from studies tracking the health of more than 205,000 medical workers in the US. Repeated surveys were taken about people's diets over almost four decades and during follow-up periods 22,000 cases of type 2 diabetes were documented. "The association between higher potato intake and increased [type 2 diabetes] risk is primarily driven by intake of French fries," the study authors wrote in The British Medical Journal. "Higher intake of French fries, but not combined baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes, was associated with a higher risk of [type 2 diabetes]." The research team also found replacing three servings of potatoes each week with whole grains was found to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by 8%. They added replacing potatoes with white rice, however was also associated with an increased risk. Dr Riley, research communications lead at Diabetes UK, said: "Type 2 diabetes is a complex condition, with many factors influencing its development, including genetics, age and ethnicity. "Diet is just one part of the picture, but this study suggests that how food is prepared can make a difference and reinforces the advice to prioritise whole grains and cut back on fried or heavily processed foods as a way to support a balanced diet and reduce your risk." Opting for boiled or mashed potatoes over French fries could significantly bolster long-term health, according to a new study linking regular consumption of fries to a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes. An international research team, including an expert from the University of Cambridge, meticulously analysed nearly four decades of dietary data from over 205,000 health workers in the US. Their aim was to explore the connection between potato consumption and type 2 diabetes risk. The findings revealed that individuals consuming French fries three times weekly faced a 20 per cent greater risk of developing the condition, a figure that rose to 27 per cent for those eating them five times a week. Conversely, baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes were not associated with any increased risk. Throughout the research period, 22,000 cases of type 2 diabetes were documented. Commenting on this study, Emma Pike, deputy head of clinical at Diabetes UK, says while there's no one-size-fits-all diet to prevent type 2 diabetes, the foods we eat can play a vital role in reducing our risk. 'A healthy, balanced diet that includes wholegrains, fruit and vegetables, unsweetened dairy and lean proteins like chicken, fish, beans and pulses, can help lower your risk,' says Pike. 'At the same time, cutting back on sugar-sweetened drinks, red and processed meats, refined carbs like white bread, sugary snacks, and some fried foods can also make a big impact as these are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It's not about perfection, but about making small, sustainable changes that support your long-term health.' Here are six simple swaps that could reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and support long-term health… 1. Swap boxed sugar cereals with milk for Greek yoghurt, muesli and berries 'Some cereals like granola and cereal clusters may seem healthy but can be high in added sugar and unhealthy fats,' says Pike. 'When choosing cereal, check the front of pack label and look for options with the most green lights. 'Another great alternative is Greek or natural yoghurt, which you can top with fruit and a sprinkle of seeds for added fibre and nutrients.' Rosie Carr, dietitian at healthy eating plan Second Nature, agrees and says: 'Sugary cereals cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes that increase hunger. Greek yoghurt provides protein that slows digestion, while muesli offers complex carbohydrates and fibre that support steady energy release. Berries add antioxidants with minimal impact on blood sugar.' 2. Swap fruit juice for whole fruit and make water your drink of choice 'Fruit juice lacks the fibre of whole fruit, causing faster blood sugar rises,' says Carr. 'Whole fruits contain fibre that slows sugar absorption and supports gut health. Water keeps you hydrated without adding any sugar or calories.' 3. Swap supermarket sandwiches for a homemade version 'Pre-packaged sandwiches typically contain refined carbohydrates, sugary sauces, and preservatives while offering minimal protein,' says Carr. 'Creating your own sandwich with sourdough bread (or other bread from your local bakery), quality protein from cured meats and cheese, and fresh tomatoes provides a more balanced meal. 'Ensuring higher protein content than supermarket versions helps slow digestion and stabilise blood sugar levels.' Wholegrain bread and extra veggies in particular attain lots of health benefits. 'Choose wholegrain bread for more fibre, and add salad or veggies for more colour, flavour and texture plus the added bonus of vitamins and minerals.' suggests Pike. 4. Swap toast with jam for scrambled eggs on toast with wilted spinach Packed with protein from the eggs and wholegrains from the toast, this is a balanced option. 'Jam is essentially concentrated fruit sugar that rapidly raises blood glucose when spread on refined toast,' says Carr. 'Eggs provide high-quality protein and fat that significantly slows digestion and lowers hunger. Adding wilted spinach increases fibre, vitamins and minerals.' 5. Swap cookies and chocolate biscuits for plain ones 'Instead of cookies or chocolate biscuits, try plain options like rich tea or digestives made with sunflower oil,' recommends Pike. 'If you're after chocolate, go for two or three squares of dark chocolate, its stronger flavour means you may be satisfied with less.' 6. Swap crisps for mixed nuts with a pinch of salt Swapping crisps for a small, unsalted handful of mixed nuts is generally a healthier choice. 'Crisps provide refined carbohydrates with little nutritional value, while nuts offer protein, fat, fibre and micronutrients,' says Carr.

A Scientist's Plan to Visit a Black Hole in 100 Years Is Wild. It Might Also Work.

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: It may be possible for a swarm of ultralight nanocrafts—propelled by a laser and traveling at a third of the speed of light—to make it to a black hole within about a century. For a spacecraft like that to reach a black hole in such a relatively short time, there would have to be a black hole 20-25 light-years from Earth, and none so close have been observed yet. Observing a black hole so close could answer questions that might warp the rules of physics. On April 10, 2019, a black hole broke the internet. The first-ever image of a black hole—starring the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87—was published by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In an equally impressive follow-up, our own galaxy's supermassive black hole (Sagittarius A*, sometimes shortened to Sag A*) would be imaged by EHT three years later. So, we can finally see these things. What we can't yet do is send a spacecraft to one. But astrophysicist Cosimo Bambi (from Fudan University in China) has a vision. He sees a visit to a black hole happening within the next century—if we can develop a spacecraft light enough to be shot through space by a laser beam, that is. While Sag A* is a staggering 26,000 light-years from Earth, and Gaia-BH1 (the closest known stellar-mass black hole) is 1,560 light-years away, they may not be our only visitation options. Bambi thinks there could possibly be a smaller black hole hiding as close as 20 to 25 light-years away. He may be (approximately) right. While 20 light-years may be something of a stretch, in 2023, a team of researchers from the University of Padua in Italy and the University of Barcelona in Spain found that there could be stellar-mass black holes as close to Earth as 150 light-years away. These alleged black holes are thought to exist in the Hyades open cluster—a horde of stars, close in age and chemical composition, held loosely together by their gravitational pull. When the team ran simulations that were supposed to end up matching the mass and size of the cluster, the only way they could reach those numbers was by including black holes. Whether these black holes actually exist, however, remains to be proven. They will be exceedingly difficult for telescopes to observe because, as their name implies, black holes emit no light. And stellar-mass black holes lack the massive accretion disks that made it possible to image the M87 black hole and Sag A*. On top of that, even if—as Bambi suggests in a study soon to be published in the journal iScience—the closest black holes are slightly further from us than 20-25 light years away, and hypothetically could be reached by a spacecraft traveling at the speed of light over a century and a half, there is still the issue of creating a spacecraft light and fast enough to trek over there. The proposal? Micro-spacecraft with light sails. These have been proposed as a way to observe distant objects up close before—the Breakthrough Starshot initiative is looking to send a swarm of nanocrafts to the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri. And those nanocrafts are similar to what Bambi is considering. No heavier than a paperclip, these tiny space probes with microchips on board will be attached to light sails propelled by a ground-based laser. Breakthrough Starshot is aiming for speeds of up to 100 million miles an hour (a third of the speed of light), and Bambi is pushing for about the same. Spacecraft traveling at a third of the speed of light would only take 70 years to reach a black hole 20 to 25 light-years away (and data beamed back from the mission will take another two decades to reach us). If there are none that close, their next port of call would be the Hyades cluster—a journey that would take at least 420 years. Now, none of this can be done before the technology is actually developed. But Bambi thinks that the lower costs and technological advancements needed for a nanocraft swarm may actually evolve within 30 years. 'It may sound really crazy, and in a sense closer to science fiction,' he said in a recent press release. 'But people said we'd never detect gravitational waves because they're too weak. We did—100 years later. People thought we'd never observe the shadows of black holes. 'Now, 50 years later, we have images of two.'
