Welfare Party of India offers support to UDF in Nilambur bypolls

The Welfare Party of India (WPI), backed by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JIH) group, has announced support for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the upcoming Nilambur Assembly bypoll in Kerala, triggering a war of words between the UDF and the ruling Communist Party (Marxist) (CPM)-led LDF.
WPI state president Rasaq Paleri justified the party's decision by claiming that public sentiments against the LDF regime were high.
'The contest in Nilambur is between the LDF and the UDF. This election is significant. For the past nine years, anti-people policies are being implemented. The election result here must underline the public dissatisfaction against the government. Our support to the UDF is unconditional. It is our political decision,' said Paleri.
He said that the party will hold family gatherings and exhort the grassroots cadre in its strongholds in the constituency to pave the way for a UDF victory.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary MV Govindan alleged that the UDF had lost the right to speak against communalism by accepting the Jamaat-e-Islami backed faction's support.
'UDF has become an alliance of communal forces, not just in Nilambur but across Kerala. They will suffer its consequences,' he said.
At the same time, he termed the support offered by the People's Democratic Party (PDP), led by cleric Abdul Nasir Maudany, as different from that of the WPI. 'PDP has suffered several persecutions in the state. It cannot be compared to Jamaat-e-Islami. The JIH has advocated the formation of an Islamic state. It is akin to the RSS. The PDP has never taken such a stand,' he said.
Leader of opposition VD Satheesan said that the CPM leader's remarks are tinged with hypocrisy.
'When they (JIH) support LDF, they are called secular forces. But when they back UDF, they become communal forces. In the past, Pinarayi Vijayan has openly admitted that he has held talks with leaders of JIH and asked the Congress why it was so anxious,' he said.
The Nilambur bye-election, slated for June 19, will see a four-cornered contest between independent PV Anvar, LDF nominee M Swaraj, UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath and BJP candidate Mohan George. The votes will be counted on June 23.

"Decided to transform Kerala into 'elderly-friendly state": CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 12 (ANI): Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the 35th General Body meeting of the Kerala Grama Panchayat Association and said that the state government has decided to transform Kerala into an 'elderly-friendly state.' The Kerala Chief Minister also underscored the vital role of local self-government institutions in the state's development trajectory. The Association must further strengthen this efficiency.' 'We have decided to transform Kerala into an elderly-friendly state. Currently, 138 gram panchayats have initiated steps in this direction. This must be expanded to all panchayats. In the field of palliative care, effective and active interventions are being made. Alongside government initiatives, many NGOs also work in this sector. These palliative care services must be integrated, and panchayats should take the lead in this effort,' said Vijayan. The Kerala Chief Minister also said that the state government aims to implement a coordinated approach involving everyone. 'We've also achieved agricultural growth above the national average. BJP calls for global condemnation after Tagore's ancestral home vandalised in Bangladesh

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra cited media reports to say that Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam were behind the attack, noting that Tagore is an iconic symbol of Bengal, and Indian culture and civilisation. New Delhi : The BJP on Thursday condemned the interim government in Bangladesh over the vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in that country and called for global denunciation of the incident targeting the legacy of the iconic Indian personality. He also slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not raising the issue, alleging that she saw infiltrators from the neighbouring Bangladesh as a vote bank and has opted to keep quiet for political reasons. 'She is driven by vote bank politics. We are driven by cultural politics,' he told reporters. The interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus has not taken any action, and its conduct has not been appropriate, Patra said. He appealed to the world community to come together against it, adding that his party believes in inclusivity. 'We are giving a global call to all the countries which value morality, civilisational thoughts, creativity and culture. They should all come together to denounce what has happened in Bangladesh,' he said. Patra said Tagore created many of memorable works in this ancestral home, known as Kachharibari and is recognised by the government there as a museum. The BJP MP noted that he not only wrote India's national anthem but also that of Bangladesh, which has seen a surge in the activities of Islamic hardlines following the deposition of Sheikh Hasina last year. High school timings revised for benefit of students: Kerala Minister Sivankutty

Kollam , Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Thursday said that the timings of high schools in the state were revised for the benefit of students and there was no fault on the part of the government. The minister said that under the revised timings, the school hours have only been extended by 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon sessions, except on Fridays, for 16 days a month. "Then only we will get the required hours equal to 220 teaching days which is a requirement for completing the prescribed curriculum of high schools as per the national education calendar and state education rules," Sivankutty said while speaking to reporters here. He was responding to a query by reporters regarding the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama raising concerns about the revised timings at an event on Wednesday where Chief Minister Pinayari Vijayan was present. Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, known as Samastha, is an association of eminent Sunni scholars who enjoy the highest support base among Kerala Muslims and it had expressed concern that the revised schedule would affect madrassa education for around 12 lakh students. Sivankutty said the government was not going to reject their concerns as it was not opposed to any community's religious beliefs and practices. He said that the government was open to holding discussions with them, but the decision to revise the timings was taken on the basis of court orders and central and state education laws which cannot be ignored. "Let them give suggestions and we will consider the same. We are not rigid on the issue," the minister said. Sivankutty also said that last year, when he had fixed the teaching days to 209 in the state, there was a lot of opposition to it, following which he had reduced it to 205. "But some teachers' organisations affiliated with the UDF went to the Kerala High Court, which in turn directed the setting up of a high-power committee to examine the matter. The committee gave its report which has been accepted by the High Court also," he said. It was based on the panel's report that the timings were revised, the minister added.
