Kerala: BJP fields Mohan George for Nilambur byelection
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party announced on Sunday that Mohan George would be its candidate for the byelection in the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala. The election will be held on June 19, and the counting is scheduled for June 23. The election was necessitated by the resignation of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA, who stepped down in January after making several allegations against the Left government in the state, including claims of RSS influence in the home department and the framing of Muslim youth in false cases. The main contest in the constituency is between United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath and the LDF's M Swaraj. The byelection has political significance as it is a precursor to next year's state assembly election and will test the popularity of the current government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. With the announcement of Swaraj's candidature, the CPI(M)'s rank and file are particularly energised, as the party is fielding its own candidate in the constituency after backing independent candidates in several past elections. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate Swaraj's election convention in Nilambur today. Meanwhile, it is not yet clear whether Anvar will contest the election or not. His relationship with the UDF soured after it announced Aryadan Shoukath, his rival in the previous election, as its candidate. He is also enraged with the UDF for not declaring his induction into the alliance. On Friday, Kerala Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress leader VD Satheesan said that the upcoming Nilambur by-election would be treated as an opportunity to hold the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government accountable. He also confirmed that the first phase of the campaign work has been completed. 'We have already launched the election campaign, and our conventions are also going on... We will take it as an opportunity to prosecute the Pinarai government...' Satheesan told ANI. He added that preparations began a month ago and that significant voter outreach had already been achieved. 'We have completed our first round of election work and started our preparation a month ago. A total of 10,000 voters are enrolled in the election, out of which we have enrolled 8000...' he further added. (ANI)

Kerala Congress leader AK Antony confident of UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath's victory in Nilambur by-elections
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], May 31 (ANI): Former Defence Minister and Congress leader AK Antony on Friday expressed confidence that United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath will emerge victorious in the upcoming Nilambur by-elections. Antony asserted that the by-election would serve as a public verdict against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government. 'People who wish that the Pinarayi government wouldn't come into power again will vote for Aryadan Shoukath. Aryadan Shoukath will win in the by-election will be a mandate against Pinarayi Government...' Antony told the media. Aryadan Shoukath also met with the senior Congress leader ahead of the polls. The election was necessitated following the resignation of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA who stepped down in January after being appointed the Convenor of the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Earlier, on May 25, Malappuram District Congress Committee (DCC) President VS Joy stated that the party's high command would finalise the candidate for the bypoll. Joy expressed confidence that the political climate in Malappuram heavily favoured the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). 'The high command will decide the candidate. The candidate is merely a technicality. The atmosphere in Malappuram is such that anyone who becomes the candidate will win,' Joy told reporters. (ANI)

Nilambur bypoll: Congress leader Aryadan Shoukath likely candidate of UDF
With the Election Commission announcing June 19 as the date for the Nilambur by-election, political activity has intensified across Kerala's Malappuram district. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has kicked off its preparations early, projecting confidence, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is still reeling from the sudden resignation of P.V. Anvar, both from the assembly and the alliance. The by-election, necessitated by Anvar's exit, is expected to be a litmus test not only for the UDF and LDF but also for several smaller parties seeking to assert their political relevance ahead of the upcoming local body elections and the 2026 Assembly polls. The Congress, the principal force in the UDF, has begun its internal deliberations and shortlisted a few potential candidates. Aryadan Shoukath, the son of veteran Congress leader Aryadan Mohammed, is the frontrunner. Malappuram District Congress Committee president V.S. Joy is also in the race but is considered a long shot, with the party likely to favour Shoukath due to his strong local support base and legacy appeal. 'The UDF has already launched its campaign in Nilambur. Our groundwork and internal preparations are progressing smoothly. The candidate will be announced soon. We are confident of securing a resounding victory in the bypoll,' said Aryadan Shoukath. However, there is an emerging demand from within the party to consider a woman candidate. Adv. Beena Joseph, Congress leader and Vice Chairperson of the Manjeri Municipality, has publicly urged the party leadership to field a female candidate in a bid to reflect the changing political aspirations of the electorate. On the other hand, the CPI(M)-led LDF is yet to finalise its strategy. The shock resignation of P.V. Anvar, who was elected as an LDF-backed independent in 2021, has left the alliance scrambling. Several names are under consideration, but the party has not made a final call. Among the CPI(M)'s probable candidates are U. Sharafali, a former Indian footballer; Prof. Thomas Mathew, former principal of Chungathara Marthoma College; and Shinas Babu, the superintendent of Nilambur Taluk Hospital. Other potential candidates include Nilambur Municipal Chairman Mattummal Saleem and Adv. Sherona Sara Joy, a district panchayat member from Vazhikadavu. 'We will take a final decision after thorough internal discussions. The election date has just been announced, and we are in the early stages of our preparations,' said M. Swaraj, CPI(M) leader and constituency in-charge. Meanwhile, smaller parties like the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), and the Welfare Party are also exploring the possibility of contesting the bypoll. With an eye on strengthening their bargaining power in future alliances, these parties see the by-election as a platform to demonstrate their electoral strength. NCP state president N.A. Muhammed Kutty confirmed that the party will hold a state committee meeting on Sunday to decide on contesting. The Welfare Party has already announced its decision to field a candidate, while the SDPI is actively preparing to enter the fray. With multiple players gearing up for battle and the stakes high for all political fronts, the Nilambur bypoll is shaping up to be a crucial political event, setting the tone for the months ahead in Kerala's evolving electoral landscape.
