Unity, strategy and IUML's key role power UDF's Nilambur victory
MALAPPURAM: "We functioned like a single party though the UDF is a platform of different parties,' Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan said in his first reaction after the Nilambur bypoll results were announced on Monday.
His remarks reflected the sentiments of those leading the different constituents in the Congress-led front.
It was the IUML that functioned as the 'lubricant' to ease any friction among the different players in a by-election hailed as the semi-final for the 2026 assembly elections.
The first hurdle before the IUML was to make Aryadan Shoukath, whose past utterances against its leaders remained a bad memory, acceptable to its cadre.
It sorted the problem out with envious flexibility, despite constant efforts by rivals to rake up the issue on social media.
The next issue for the UDF was P V Anvar, whose mercurial character and contradictory utterances baffled all. After Satheesan took the crucial decision to keep him out of the UDF, the IUML stood by Congress despite its difference of opinion.
There were also problems with the UDF associating with the Welfare Party, the political wing of the Jama'at-e-Islami, an organisation it had kept at an arm's length, citing its extremist leanings.
It became the IUML's responsibility to justify the association, which was done by P K Kunhalikutty who said the UDF will not say 'no' to votes from any corner. The League showed maturity in dealing with the allegation of nurturing extremist elements.
Kunhalikutty maintained the decency after the result was announced.
'Nilambur is the cross section of Kerala where there is the presence of all communities,' he said, adding that the UDF win was a reflection of the secular mind of the state.

The Congress-led UDF may be basking in the glory of a thumping victory in the Nilambur Assembly bypoll, but the spotlight still lingers on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Despite the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF losing the seat -- and with its high-profile candidate M. Swaraj suffering defeat -- there has been no dissent or murmur of protest within the party against Vijayan's nine-year unbroken leadership. Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath reclaimed Nilambur, a seat that had gone to CPI(M)-backed independent P.V. Anvar in both 2016 and 2021 state elections. Anvar had won with a margin of 11,504 votes in 2016 and 11,077 votes in 2021, although his margin shrank to 2,800 in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. A political observer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IANS, 'Even after defeat, no one is pointing fingers at anyone within the CPI(M). Compare that to the Congress, where internal contradictions surface even in victory.' 'This is the organisational strength of the CPI(M). Already, confusion surrounds Anvar's future, with senior Congress leaders sending mixed signals,' he added. CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan claimed that the Left's vote base remained intact and insisted that the bypoll result did not reflect anti-incumbency. Sharing the same sentiment, youth leader Jake C. Thomas -- who lost thrice to the Chandy family, including in a 2023 bypoll to Chandy Oommen -- said, 'Now that Govindan has spoken, I have nothing more to add.' Meanwhile, Anvar's future continues to hang in the balance. After falling out with CM Vijayan, Anvar resigned as MLA in January this year and made efforts to align with the UDF as an associate member. But his overtures were strongly resisted by a faction led by the Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan. In the Nilambur bypoll, Anvar managed to secure over 19,000 votes. State Congress president K. Sudhakaran and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala hinted that the doors weren't fully shut on Anvar, leaving Satheesan visibly uncomfortable. When asked about Anvar's prospects within the UDF, Satheesan replied curtly, 'No comments.' UDF convenor Adoor Prakash added a note of caution: 'We tried to cooperate with Anvar, but his last-minute actions made things difficult. Any future decision regarding him must be taken collectively by all alliance partners.' Unfazed, Anvar has now declared political war against State Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, Vijayan's son-in-law. He has vowed to contest against Riyas in Beypore in the 2026 Assembly elections. As the CPI(M) closes ranks and shields Vijayan from the fallout of the Nilambur defeat, the UDF now finds itself grappling with post-victory challenges, particularly over Anvar's future.

'Another blow to Indian diplomacy': Congress flays Centre amid ASEAN 'displeasure' over Goyal's remarks
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday slammed the government over the reported displeasure expressed by the ASEAN co-chair for the review of India FTA following Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's 'B-Team of China' remark, and said it was "another blow" to Indian diplomacy. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared on X a media report which claimed that the ASEAN co-chair for the review of India FTA has expressed displeasure over Goyal's recent remarks, describing several countries in the region as a "B team of China." In his post on X, Ramesh said, "India has very close civilizational, cultural, economic, and political ties with the 10-nation ASEAN Group--Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN, that came into being almost six decades back, has a combined GDP just slightly lower than that of India." The Union Commerce and Industry Minister dismisses them as the "B team of China", he said. "ASEAN now ticks him off. Indian diplomacy suffers yet another blow. This was needless," Ramesh added. Last week, speaking at the India Global Forum (IGF) session on UK-India Science, Technology and Innovation Collaboration at the Science Museum in London, Goyal had said, "There was a point of time 15 years ago when we were more focused on doing FTAs with countries who were our competitors. So if I am doing an ASEAN agreement, it really is silly because (that is) opening up my market to my competitors, many of whom have now become the B team of China." The Congress had slammed Goyal for his remarks against the India-ASEAN trade agreements, saying labelling these countries as "B team of China" is "irresponsible and insulting." In a statement, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma had said Goyal's statement "belittling India ASEAN Trade Agreements is unwarranted, ill advised and unfortunate."

HYDERABAD: BRS leaders on Monday dared minister of state (MoS) and BJP leader Bandi Sanjay to get permission from the Centre and the BJP-led Mahayuti govt in Maharashtra to construct a barrage at Tummidihatti at a height of 152 metres, along with approval of chief minister A Revanth Reddy . They said BRS leaders and the people of Telangana would remember him forever. Speaking at a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Monday, ex-MP B Vinod Kumar, ex-minister Gangula Kamalakar, MLC Dasoju Sravan, MLA Sanjay and others stated that since BJP is in power both at the Centre and in Maharashtra, Bandi Sanjay, being a Union minister, could use his good offices to gain approval from Maharashtra for the Tummidihatti barrage. "We will wait for two months, and CM Revanth Reddy can lay the foundation stone for the new barrage," they added. The leaders alleged that Bandi Sanjay was making comments on Kaleshwaram without any knowledge of the project. "The previous Congress govt increased the Pranahitha-Chevella project estimates to 40,000 crore before starting the project works. Sanjay was not talking about that.
