Zayas, 22, becomes youngest active world champion
At New York's Madison Square Garden on Saturday, Zayas secured a dominant points victory by margins of 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109.
"This is a dream come true," said Zayas, who turned professional at 17. "This is beautiful. To see my Puerto Rican fans here, this is amazing. I could never dream of anything better than this."
Unbeaten Zayas, who has won all 22 of his professional fights, took control of the contest with quick jabs to the body and powerful rights.
Garcia, suffering only his fifth loss in his 38th bout, managed to go toe-to-toe with Zayas in a thrilling sixth round, but could not maintain that pressure as Zayas was able to show his class and dominate the later rounds.
"I had to box my way to victory," added Zayas. "I knew if I stood in front of him I'd be fighting his fight. So, I did everything behind the jab. The jab was the key to victory, and we showed that."
US-born Puerto Rican Wilfred Benitez holds the record for being the youngest-ever world champion as he was 17 years and 176 days when he won the WBA light-welterweight belt in March 1976.

RB Jonathan Ward to sign with Giants
The Giants are signing veteran running back Jonathan Ward, Jordan Schultz reports. Ward worked out for the team Monday. The Giants need depth at the position with minor injuries to rookie Cam Skattebo (hamstring) and undrafted rookie Rushawn Baker (knee). Ward, 27, spent last season with the Steelers and played 10 offensive snaps and 59 on special teams. He had five carries for 22 yards. He also has played games for the Cardinals and Titans and has totaled 28 touches for 143 yards and a touchdown in his career.

New York Giants signing RB Jonathan Ward
With injury issues plaguing them at the position, the New York Giants hosted several free agent running backs for a tryout in East Rutherford on Monday. Following those workouts, the Giants settled on signing Jonathan Ward. The 27-year-old Ward signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie out of Central Michigan in 2020. He remained with the team for two-plus seasons before landing on injured reserve (IR) in 2022 and later being released. The New York Jets briefly signed Ward, who then finished the season and spent the subsequent year with the Tennessee Titans. The 6-foot, 202-pound Ward spent last season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was teammates with current Giants quarterback Russell Wilson. In 46 career games, Ward has rushed for 91 yards on 22 carries (4.1 ypc), and hauled in six receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown. He's also returned two kickoffs for 42 yards and recorded 18 special teams tackles. A corresponding roster move has not been announced.
