Golden Barrel Trophy
Kavalan will be the custodian of the Golden Barrel trophy for winning Whisky of the Year until next year's winner is announced.
About the Golden Barrel Trophy
Designed in Switzerland and unveiled at Diageo Archive, the Golden Barrel Trophy represents the pinnacle of excellence in whisky making, showcasing two lions holding a whisky barrel. It is casted in bronze with 24K golden leaves on each side of the barrel. The Golden Barrel will be kept by the winner of the Whisky of the Year until next year's competition and the name of each winner will be engraved in its marble base to commemorate the history of each annual Whisky of the Year. Basically, the Golden Barrel is to whisky what the World Cup is to football.
About International Whisky Competition (IWC)
Established in 2010, the International Whisky Competition was created to offer a truly competitive and credible judging platform, awarding only three medals — Gold, Silver, and Bronze — in each category. With its rigorous standards and transparent methodology, the IWC has earned a reputation as the "Olympics of the whisky world."
Whiskies are evaluated through a double blind tasting process, ensuring absolute impartiality. Judges are unaware of the producer, origin, or any identifying details about the whiskies they assess, other than whether the sample is cask strength.
The judging panel is composed exclusively of whisky experts: Masters of Whisky, Scotch, or Bourbon, Master Distillers, Blenders, and seasoned industry experts. Each brings a depth of experience and precision to every evaluation.
Each whisky is judged individually for up to 8 minutes, using a detailed scoring system based on four main segments and eleven subcategories:
Sight• Colour (0 points) • Visual Appeal (5 points)
Nose• Intensity and Complexity (15 points) • Distinctiveness of Aromas (10 points) • Balance of Aromas (10 points)
Taste• Palate and Balance (10 points) • Alcohol, Body, and Complexity (10 points) • Distinctiveness of Flavours (10 points) • Balance Between Flavours (10 points)
Finish• Length and Finish (10 points) • Quality of Finish (10 points)

Why the simple pineapple whip is still a favorite: Your 2025 Kentucky State Fair food guide
Of all the many bites to find at the 121st Kentucky State Fair, the pineapple whip may be among the simplest. It was born that way. As the Frazier Museum showcases in the 'Tasty Kentucky' part of its Cool Kentucky exhibition, Libbertt Concessions' popular pineapple whip is one of the oldest items sold at the Kentucky State Fair. The light and fruity custard originated in 1932 out of a need for a cheap treat during the Great Depression. It was made to cost less than a quarter and could've gone for five cents. Even though the inventor hails from Indiana, the iconic dish has stood the test of time as a Kentucky State Fair favorite. In honor of the pineapple whip purveyor's 103rd year at the fair, every 103rd scoop per day will be free to customers, according to Libbertt Concessions co-owner Anita Carroll. And, though simple, the little dessert carries a mighty tradition that is still sweetening. More: Cheetos corn dog and ostrich burgers: new foods to try the 2025 Kentucky State Fair Take, for example, Carroll's view on things. 'So, funny story…' she told the Courier Journal, before launching into a fair love story of sorts. Her dad is said to be the inventor of the elephant ear, large, thin, and irregularly shaped fried dough that is another inescapable fair staple. She grew up around fair families, like the one belonging to Carl Wagoner, the grandson of the inventor of the pineapple whip. As kids, they played together around many fairgrounds. About three years ago, they started dating and, now, a couple in their early 50s, have combined forces under 'the same unique world,' Carroll said. 'His family is known for the pineapple whip, and my family is known for the elephant ear,' she said. 'It's kind of crazy.' Together, they're 'taking it over as a new generation.' And that means keeping the standards up and the fair food flowing. 'We want to keep the recipe like everybody remembers,' she said of the pineapple whip. 'And we want it to be consistent. I'm a firm believer of not changing something like that. If it's working, don't change it.' More: From concerts and rides to fried food & more, 10 things to do at the Kentucky State Fair The pineapple whip goes for $6 in a cup and $8 in a waffle cone these days, and is still made with real pineapple juice. And the fair staple attracts plenty of regular customers who say "they come here every year for this' or just wander over for a refreshing reprieve from hot days at the Kentucky State Fair. 'Everybody loves it,' Carroll said. 'The pineapple whip is really known at the Kentucky State Fair.' Tumbarumba Edges Prince Of Power Late In R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones
Tumbarumba Edges Prince Of Power Late In R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones originally appeared on Paulick Report. Wathnan Racing's Tumbarumba dug in gamely in deep stretch to outfinish Prince of Power and capture the fourth running of the $200,000 R.A. 'Cowboy' Jones Stakes at Ellis Park. Trained by Brian Lynch and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Tumbarumba covered the mile in 1:35.38 over a fast track. In the early stages of the race, fleet-footed Frosted Departure seized the early lead tracked closely by Prince of Power and This Is Uscar. As the field hit the backstretch following a quarter-mile in :23.63, even-money favorite Tumbarumba was positioned a few lengths back in fourth but began his move on the far twhourn by tipping in the clear from his rail draw. After a half-mile in :46.05, Prince of Power ranged up outside the Frosted Departure as Tumbarumba was forced three-wide. Entering the stretch, Tumbarumba found his best strides down the center of the track while This Is Uscar squeezed through along the rail and Prince of Power battled between. In deep stretch, it turned into a two-horse battle between Tumbarumba and Prince of Power with Tumbarumba prevailing by a hard-fought neck. 'He's always willing to fight,' Gaffalione said of Tumbarumba, a 5-year-old Oscar Performance gelding out of the Street Sense mare Naive Enough. 'He is a fun horse to ride and I look forward to riding him every time. Everything played out like we needed. I got him out down the backside and let him come with his best run late.' Tumbarumba, bred by Coteau Grove Farms, returned his backers $4.24. This Is Uscar held the third spot, followed by Frosted Departure and Three Technique. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Aug 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
