Michael Van Gerwen blasted for taking too many holidays with darts star planning to jet to IBIZA and skip next month's World Cup of Darts

Daily Mail09-05-2025
Michael van Gerwen has been told to take fewer holidays and focus on his darts if he wants to regain his best form by close friend Vincent van der Voort.
The three-time world champion has endured an inconsistent season, going out in the round of 32 at last week's European Grand Prix, before losing 6-4 to Luke Humphries in their Premier League quarter-final in Leeds on Thursday.
Despite struggling for form, the 36-year-old Dutch star is ditching next months World Cup of Darts in favour of a trip to Ibiza.
Earlier this year, the seven-time Premier League darts winner suffered with health problems for two months after picking up an illness while on holiday in Thailand.
Van der Voort, a former UK open runner up, warned his compatriot he 'can't just take a holiday' if he wants to rediscover his best darts.
The 49-year-old told the Darts Draait Podcast: 'Sometimes he plays really well, but then he can't keep it up. He's going to have to train hard.
'He needs to put in the effort or he'll never find consistent form again.
'You can't just take a holiday and expect things to fall back into place. It doesn't work like that.'
Van der Voort previously backed Van Gerwen's holiday, which he said would allow him to be 'fresh' for the remainder of the season.
'I think he'll be on a very big boat near Ibiza around that time. It's all very inconvenient, of course,' he said.
'Playing for your country is a great honour, but let's be honest, the World Cup of Darts was somewhat forced into the calendar.'
'We looked at the schedule, and Michael wants to be at his best in the autumn. That means something has to give.
'He wants to be fresh for the second half of the year, which is why his holiday falls during the World Cup. It's a matter of making choices.
'The World Cup just has a lower priority at the moment. Maybe he'll return to it next year.'
The seven-time Premier League Darts winner faces Nathan Aspinall in Aberdeen next week
Meanwhile, Professional Darts Corporation Chief Executive Matt Porter supported his decision.
'[Players] have to manage their schedule you know.
'The good thing about our tournaments is that they are strong enough to survive the absence of players.'
Van Gerwen currently sits in fourth in the Premier League Darts table, a single point ahead of Nathan Aspinall, before they face each other in Aberdeen next week.

Mo Salah makes statement on record triumph as Liverpool team-mate says 'it's f*****g murder'

Mohamed Salah was named the PFA Player of the Year for a record third time as he continues to be lauded by those close to him at Liverpool following another stellar season Mohamed Salah has made history by winning the PFA Player of the Year award for a third time as Liverpool team-mates Alexis Mac Allister hailed the standards set by the Egyptian. ‌ Salah spearheaded Liverpool's ascent to the Premier League title, enjoying one of his best seasons in front of goal. The forward scored 34 times in all competitions as the Reds claimed top flight success in Arne Slot 's first year at the helm. ‌ The Egyptian himself claimed another Golden Boot award, his fourth during his time at Anfield, which has seen him land more individual accolades. Salah was named the Premier League's best player in 2018, his debut year, and then again in 2022. ‌ On both those occasions Salah won the award without claiming the title and he insists landing both in the same year gives it an even greater feel. He said on social media: "This very special award hits different when we have an important trophy to go along with it. Being champions is what matters and we will fight to do it again this season. I am incredible grateful to the players who voted for me." Salah's standards and drive have continued to leave their mark on his team-mates. Mac Allister has spent two years alongside him at Liverpool and is fully aware of the demands the league places on each player. He's seen the Egyptian as a benchmark, but has continued to be outdone by his colleague, who is seven years his senior. He said in The Player's Tribune: 'The pressure at this level is so intense. To me, it (the Premier League) is the hardest trophy in the world to win. Harder than the Champions League. The Premier League is nine months. Mentally, physically, emotionally… It's f***ing murder. 'Look at Mo, for example. You cannot imagine how hard he pushes himself to stay at the top in this league. Mo, he's hilarious. For a few weeks, I actually tried to get to the gym before him, but it was impossible. He was always there already, sweating." ‌ The Argentine admits he once quizzed Salah on when he actually sleeps, only to learn that the forward doesn't like to get more than seven hours sleep. Mac Allister also attempted to outdo the Egyptian in an abs contest, only to be left beaten as he admitted he "did three sessions with Mo before I gave up". 'Mo sets the tone for everyone at Liverpool. He is the best professional I've ever seen. He's a monster," said Mac Allister.

And it's misery for West Ham, with the Supercomputer tipping them for bottom spot with just six wins all season.

Man City finally launch Gianluigi Donnarumma transfer talks after Pep Guardiola hint

Gianluigi Donnarumma's future continues to hang in the balance with Manchester City among the clubs interested in bringing the Paris Saint-Germain star to England Manchester City have opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a move for Gianlugii Donnarumma. Italy goalkeeper Donnarumma is tipped to leave Paris this summer following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier, with Pep Guardiola's side among the potential buyers. ‌ City have already signed one goalkeeper this summer, with James Trafford rejoining the club after a spell at Burnley. Stefan Ortega is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium, but last season's first choice Ederson could also depart to make way for a Donnarumma swoop. ‌ Ederson was left out of City's squad for the Premier League opener at Wolves on Saturday, with Trafford starting and Ortega on the bench. Guardiola said the Brazilian missed out through illness, but reports of a Galatasaray switch are gathering pace. ‌ According to Football Italia, there is still work to be done on the Donnarumma fee. City are said to be unwilling to meet PSG's asking price of around £40m, but the prospect of getting the keeper's high wages off the bill could convince the French club to lower their demands. Similarly, City are believed to be at odds with Galatasaray when it comes to the valuation of Ederson. The Turkish side value the Brazilian at £10m or less, but the Premier League side are holding out for more despite him being in the final year of his contract. Donnarumma has been with PSG since 2021, when he joined on a free from AC Milan, and helped the Ligue 1 champions win last season's Champions League. He was left out of the recent Super Cup squad, though, with manager Luis Enrique explaining the situation. 'I can only say good things about Gigio Donnarumma', the boss told reporters. 'He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of goalkeeper.' Guardiola declined to answer when asked on Saturday if Ederson had played his final game for the club. Instead, he attempted to focus on Trafford's performance after the 22-year-old made a long-awaited debut for the club. ‌ "I'm so happy for James. for the fact that he is an academy player and he is a City fan and made his debut in the Premier League here," Guardiola told BBC Radio 5 Live after the 4-0 win at Molineux. "He played really good and I'm really pleased. I like when the young players in the academy can play for Man City, It's really, really good." If Galatasaray do end up signing Ederson, it would see him reunited with former City winger Leroy Sane. German international Sane joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich earlier in the summer.
