J-K CM Omar Abdullah urges Centre to arrange more Haj flights from Srinagar
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 16 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged the Government of India to arrange additional Haj flights from Srinagar to clear the backlog of 1,895 pilgrims caused by recent flight disruptions.
In a tweet, the J-K CM said, 'I have taken up with the Government of India the urgent need to arrange additional Haj flights from Srinagar to clear the backlog of 1,895 pilgrims caused by recent flight disruptions. Ensuring a smooth and timely pilgrimage for our pilgrims is the Government's priority.'
Meanwhile, days after the first batch of Haj pilgrims in Srinagar left for Saudi Arabia's Mecca to undertake the annual holy pilgrimage, the second batch of Haj pilgrims also departed for Mecca from Srinagar following the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saw off the first batch of 178 Hajj pilgrims, who left for the holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia on May 11.
'Today, I had the honour of bidding a warm see-off to the first batch of 178 Hajj pilgrims from Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar. Wished them a safe, fulfilling journey and humbly requested prayers for peace and prosperity in our region,' J&K CMO posted on X.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha was also present to flag off the first batch of Hajj pilgrims.
At least 3,372 Hujjaj Karam, a title bestowed upon the Hajj pilgrims, departed from Srinagar on May 11. A facilitator for the Hajj pilgrims informed that the last flight to Mecca was scheduled for May 15.
Malik Abrar Altaf, overwhelmed with emotions, explained that the Hajj pilgrimage means undergoing a journey. He said he would make 'dua' for Kashmir, which has witnessed many turmoils.
'I can't describe my emotions. The feeling is different. Hajj means journey. Allah called us, and we are going. I only hope Allah makes our journey easier and has mercy on our qaum. Islam means peace. We only hope that there is peace across the world. We will make dua for Kashmir, which always remains under turmoil,' Altaf told ANI.
Another Hujjaj Karam explained that the Hajj pilgrimage is undertaken by Muslims once in their life. He expressed grief over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and said that he would pray for Kashmir.
'This is the biggest day in my life. Muslims have to undertake this journey (once in our lifetime). We will offer duas for Kashmir because there is a lot of pain here. We will pray for Pahalgam,' he said. (ANI)

On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls. Immediately after departing from Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site. Vishwashkumar Ramesh miraculously survived the Air India plane crash a day ago, in which 241 other passengers died. Kumar, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in row 11, at the left window seat in the flight's economy class section, right behind an emergency exit. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)

UP government takes National Family Benefit Scheme process online, people to receive benefits within 75 days
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 14 (ANI): The beneficiaries under the National Family Benefit Scheme will now be able to avail the benefits of the scheme while sitting at home, as the Uttar Pradesh government has taken the entire process from application to payment online. Under this new system, the UP government has made sure that the assistance amount is made available to the eligible applicants within 75 days from the date of application, according to a statement. In case the payment is not received within the deadline, the payment will be made immediately after taking approval from the committee at the district level itself, removing the hassle of taking approval at the state level in case of delays. To implement the scheme effectively. The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government has directed District Social Welfare Officers to prepare a final list of eligible beneficiaries will be prepared and present it before the approval committee within seven days. After this, the list will be uploaded on the portal with a digital signature, and the amount will be transferred to the Aadhar-linked bank account through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), according to the statement. Even in the absence of a budget, the District Magistrate can ensure payment by withdrawing funds under the Treasury rules, so that there is no delay in getting the benefit to the beneficiaries. Special provisions have also been made for immediate assistance in emergency situations. The District Social Welfare Officer and the District Magistrate will verify the application through digital signature and payment will be made immediately after approval. To resolve any problem related to the scheme, helpline number 14568 has been started in the command centre at the headquarters level, where beneficiaries can register their complaints. Yogi Adityanath-led government has also emphasised on wide publicity of the scheme. The list of beneficiaries and eligibility conditions will be publicly displayed on the Tehsil days. Information will also be conveyed to the people through hoardings, posters and handbills, so that more and more needy people can take advantage of this scheme. Improvements are also being made at the technical level regarding the scheme, the statement added. By making the National Family Benefit Scheme transparent and fast, the Yogi government is ensuring that no eligible family is deprived of help. In the financial year 2024-25, the Yogi government has extended the benefit of the scheme to 1,08,883 destitute families, in which the government has spent Rs 326.64 crore, the statement added. The scheme provides financial assistance to families living below the poverty line (BPL) when the primary breadwinner, aged 18-59, passes away. (ANI)

Bangladesh: Yunus hints at holding elections in early February
Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 14 (ANI): Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, has hinted at holding national elections in early February next year. 'The Chief Adviser said that he has announced that the elections will be held by the first half of February next year. If all preparations are completed, the elections could be held even in the week before the start of Ramadan in 2026,' said a joint statement issued after the talks between Muhammad Yunus and Acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman in London. 'In that case, it will be necessary to achieve sufficient progress on reform and justice within that period,' it added. 'Today, BNP Acting Chairperson Mr. Tarique Rahman met with visiting Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus in London. Their meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere,' the statement said. Tarique Rahman proposed to the Chief Adviser to hold the elections before Ramadan next year. Party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also thinks it would be better if the elections were held at that time, the statement added.
