From Jack Harris: The rain came out of nowhere. So too, it seemed, did Max Muncy's infield pop-up. In the top of the sixth inning at Coors Field on Tuesday night, Muncy was at the plate with two out and two runners aboard when a sudden rainstorm opened up from overcast skies. Within moments, sheets of rain were pouring down. But as fans scattered for cover, umpires let the at-bat roll on. 'My glasses were pretty full of water at that point,' Muncy said. 'Was just kind of praying to put the ball in play.' In a full count, Muncy did, launching a sky-high pop-up down the first base line. In clear conditions, it would have been a routine catch to end the inning. But this time, neither Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia nor second baseman Thairo Estrada could locate the blur of leather as it came hurtling back to earth. 'When rain is falling that thick,' Muncy said, 'it's really hard to look up and find a baseball.' In the scorebook, the play went down as a two-run single, representing the first runs in a game the Dodgers went on to win 8-1 — with the help of a victory-sealing grand slam from Muncy in the top of the seventh. Fried becomes first 10-game winner as Domínguez and Grisham power Yankees to 7-1 victory over Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — Max Fried became this season's first 10-game winner, Jasson Domínguez and Trent Grisham had four hits apiece and the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night to avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the Yankees (46-34), who remained one game in front of Tampa Bay in the AL East. Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Fried (10-2) went seven innings and allowed an unearned run, four hits and seven strikeouts. The left-hander is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. Domínguez and Grisham each had two doubles. The four hits were a career high for Domínguez while it was the third time Grisham has had at least four hits in his seven-year career. Chisholm, ejected in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 5-4 loss in 11 innings after arguing a strike call, bounced back with a two-run, third-inning drive off Brady Singer (7-6). Giancarlo Stanton led off the inning with a single and Chisholm sent Singer's slider 433 feet into the stands in right-center to make it 3-0. Four of Chisholm's 17 homers have come since he returned to the lineup on June 3 after missing 28 games due to a right oblique strain. The Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position throughout the series, but broke through in the second when Grisham lined an RBI single to right with the bases loaded. They were 4 for 22 on Wednesday and 5 for 43 for the series. Key stat Fried is 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts after a Yankees' loss. He has gone at least six innings in all those starts and didn't allow an earned run for the sixth time. Up next Yankees: Return home to host Oakland in a weekend series. Rasmussen and the Rays bullpen shine in 3-0 win over Royals, extending their road win streak to 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Wednesday night. Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save. The Rays (45-35) have won five straight on the road, nine of their last 12 overall and are a season-best 10 games over .500. José Caballero had an RBI bunt single and Danny Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt against Michael Wacha during the decisive second for Tampa Bay. Christopher Morel, Josh Lowe and Chandler Simpson had singles in the inning. Other than that, Wacha (4-7) was tough on the Rays. He went six innings and struck out nine while walking just one. His biggest problem has been the Royals' biggest problem: They aren't scoring. Not only have they managed four runs total amid a four-game losing streak, they have given Wacha two runs of support or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts this season. Kansas City has lost nine straight at Kauffman Stadium since beating Detroit on May 31, its longest home skid since dropping 10 in a row in April and May 2023. The Royals also have lost 10 of their last 14 games overall. Key stat Kansas City has not hit a home run in its last 54 innings at Kauffman Stadium.
