Met Police needs to improve handling of missing children cases, watchdog says
A report by His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) into the force's handling of the sexual and criminal exploitation of children found there had been 'positive progress' since a previous report in June 2023.
But it said the force needs further improvement in certain areas, including not acting quickly enough and incorrectly grading some cases involving missing children.
The report also found too many opportunities to follow lines of enquiry were missed.
Other findings showed the force rarely carried out initial victim needs assessments and had problems complying with the Code of Practice for Victims of Crime.
Among the improvements were how crimes involving exploiting children and the risk to missing children are assessed, ensuring better communications with child victims and safeguarding partners, taking steps to eradicate victim-blaming language and the use of innovative techniques to help find children quickly.
His Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary Lee Freeman said: 'Children who go missing from home, or are at risk of exploitation, are some of the most vulnerable in society.
'When we inspected the Metropolitan Police Service in 2023, it wasn't doing enough when children were suffering from, or at risk of, exploitation. I am pleased to report that the senior leadership response to the issues we raised has been positive.
'However, the service still has more work to do to improve further and to provide a consistently good service. We will continue to closely monitor its progress.'
The watchdog removed the Metropolitan Police from special measures in January after more than two years.

The Metropolitan Police has said it is investigating allegations of drug use on Strictly Come Dancing. In a statement, the Met said it had "received an allegation about drug related offences". A Met spokesperson later confirmed that the force had "received an allegation about drug related offences" on Tuesday 12 August. The BBC said it would not comment on any police investigation. But it highlighted a previous statement which read: "We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. "We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further." Strictly, which has been airing since 2004, has faced multiple controversies over the past few years relating to the behaviour of some of its professionals and celebrity guests. It is believed, however, that this is the first time the BBC has been in contact with the police over allegations linked to the show.

Police make six arrests at asylum hotel protest
Police made six arrests at a protest outside a hotel in London that has been used to house asylum seekers. Protesters gathered outside the Britannia International Hotel in Canary Wharf on Sunday afternoon, with some setting off pink flares and waving England flags. Some demonstrators carried a banner that said: 'We're not far right but we're not far wrong. Don't gamble with our lives. Stop the boats.' The Metropolitan Police said six arrests were made for breaching Section 14 Public Order conditions, possession of Class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker. In a post on X, the Metropolitan Police said: 'We have imposed conditions using Section 14 of the Public Order Act to prevent serious disruption at the protests in Canary Wharf. 'The group protesting against the use of the hotel by asylum seekers have been instructed to remain on the pavement opposite the Britannia Hotel.' The hotel has been the site of numerous anti-migrant protests in recent weeks.

Three arrested in murder investigation after woman fatally assaulted
Three arrested in murder investigation after woman fatally assaulted Three men have been arrested in a murder investigation that was launched after a woman in her 20s was fatally assaulted, police said. The Metropolitan Police were called to Chadwell Heath, east London, just after 5.30am on Saturday after reports of an assault. Paramedics also attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Chadwell Heath Lane, the force said. A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and two men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, it added on Sunday. 'Early enquiries by detectives indicate this is an isolated incident and those involved are believed to be known to each other', the Met said. A cordon is in place and a police tent was erected in the driveway to a residential care home. The woman has not yet been formally identified but officers believe she was in her 20s. The victim's family have been informed and are being supported by family liaison officers, the force added. Detective Superintendent Brian Hobbs said: 'Our thoughts remain with the victim's family and friends in light of this truly tragic event. 'Although we have now made arrests, local residents will continue to see an increased number of officers in and around the area while our investigative work is carried out. 'I would ask anyone who was in the area of Romford, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to speak to us.'
