US and Qatar announce $1.2 trillion in economic and defense agreements
Washington D.C. (IraqiNews.com) – The White House announced on Wednesday (May 14, 2025) that US President Donald Trump has concluded economic agreements with Qatar valued at at least $1.2 trillion, including over $243.5 billion in commercial deals.
Highlights include a historic $96 billion order from Qatar Airways for up to 210 Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft with GE Aerospace engines, projected to support over one million US jobs. Energy firm McDermott secured $8.5 billion in projects with QatarEnergy, and Parsons Corporation won $97 billion in Qatari projects. Additionally, Quantinuum will partner with Qatar's Al-Rabban Capital in a $1 billion quantum technology venture.
The agreements also significantly bolster defense ties. Raytheon will supply Qatar with $1 billion in counter-drone systems (FS-LIDS), a first for a foreign nation. General Atomics will provide nearly $2 billion in MQ-9B drones. A statement of intent outlines a potential $38 billion for further security cooperation, including investments in Al Udeid Air Base.
The White House stated these deals will 'spur innovation and prosperity for generations.'

International Union Of Muslim Scholars, Which Preaches Jihad And Terrorism, Working To Tighten Cooperation With Islamic Centers In Ireland And Elsewhere In Europe
Wanis Al-Mabrouk, assistant secretary-general of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), recently visited Ireland's capital Dublin as part of the organization's efforts to strengthen its ties with Islamic centers and communities in Europe. In the course of his visit he met with prominent figures in Ireland's Muslim community and with mosque imams from across the country, and discussed cooperation between them and the IUMS, including the possibility of their joining the union. Currently numbering about 100,000 members in 92 countries, the IUMS serves as an organ of the Qatari regime for spreading an extremist and anti-West Islamist ideology. It routinely promotes hateful rhetoric and incitement to jihad, terrorism and antisemitism, in line with Qatar's decades-long support for various terrorist groups worldwide (see the Appendix). The IUMS has special ties with Ireland because it was founded there in 2004 by Sheikh Yousuf Al-Qaradawi. The union was headquartered in Dublin until 2010, when it came to be sponsored by Qatar and moved its headquarters to Doha.[1] Sheikh Al-Qaradawi, who was born in Egypt and settled in Qatar in the 1960s, was a leading authority for the Muslim Brotherhood movement, and was known for his extremist positions in praise of jihad and terrorism and even suicide bombings, and for his extreme anti-West views and his aspiration for Islamic control of Europe.[2] Due to his views he was designated a terrorist by several Arab countries and banned from entering several Western countries, including the U.S. His successors in the IUMS, Ahmad Al-Raissouni and the current chair Ali Al-Qaradaghi, have expressed similar opinions and praised jihad and terrorism. In the course of his visit he delivered a Friday sermon, organized a three-day seminar and met with Muslim community leaders and with mosque imams from around the country. He "discussed the IUMS vision and goals, avenues for future cooperation, and the possibility of integrating new members into the IUMS in the near future." Gold firms as traders await US data; silver hits 13-year high
Shafaq News/ Gold held its ground on Thursday as investors looked forward to U.S. non-farm payrolls data due later this week to assess the U.S. interest rate path, while silver prices rose above the key $35 per ounce level for the first time since October 2012. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $3,383.79 an ounce, as of 0933 GMT. U.S. gold futures rose 0.3% to $3,407.80. "I would say that the path of least resistance remains to the upside, despite today's sort of flat mode for gold trading. But I think this is more due to traders being in wait-and-see mode ahead of non-farm payrolls," said Ricardo Evangelista, senior analyst at brokerage firm ActivTrades. Wednesday's ADP National Employment Report revealed U.S. private payrolls increased far less than expected in May. U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for Fed Chair Jerome Powell to lower interest rates. "I think that a weakening in the US labor market will increase bets on a dovish Fed, so on the Fed cutting interest rates, (which) would be positive for gold," Evangelista added. Gold, a safe-haven asset during times of political and economic uncertainty, tends to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment. Meanwhile, spot silver jumped 1.7% to $35.55 per ounce, its highest level since February 2012. Silver's "recent underperformance against gold because of economic concerns, given that 70% of silver usage is industrial, it looks that there could be some ratio trading going on now that it has dipped below the 100 level," StoneX analyst Rhona O'Connell said. The gold-silver ratio, denoting how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold can buy, is used by the market to gauge future trends as it indicates silver's current performance against its historical correlation with gold. Platinum rose 3.5% to $1,122.80, its highest level since April 2023, and palladium was up 2.4% at $1,025. "Tangible assets with limited supply such as gold, silver, platinum and copper should be part of a broad portfolio in order to mitigate any economic fallout from geopolitical events, government mismanagement of debt and rising inflation threat" said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank. Trump on Wednesday said the nation's debt ceiling should be eliminated, saying he agreed with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren's view on the subject.

Iraq's natural resource value surpasses $16 trillion
Baghdad ( – Iraq's underdeveloped mining industry is a critical component of the country's ambitions to diversify its economy away from oil, which accounts for over 90 percent of the government's revenue. The Prime Minister's financial advisor, Mazhar Salih, confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq is moving towards diversifying its GDP sources by increasing investment in the mining industry. In a statement to the state-run news agency (INA), Salih indicated that the value of Iraq's natural resources exceeds $16 trillion. Geological statistics suggest that Iraq has massive quantities of minerals such as sulfur, phosphate, rock salt, iron, and manganese, some of which are among the largest in the world. According to studies, Iraq has the world's largest reserves of sulfur and silica. The Iraqi government reached deals with major firms to explore natural resources as part of its effort to diversify national revenue and maximize the country's utilization of resources. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said in April that Iraq is currently the world's greatest producer of sulfur and the second-largest producer of phosphate. Last month, Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals Khalid Battal Al-Najm laid the foundation stone for new integrated phosphate fertilizer facilities in the western Iraqi province of Anbar. The move signals the rebirth of Iraq's most significant industrial institutions after years of stagnation and destruction caused by terrorism.
