20 students survive morning bus crash on East Coast Expressway

Maran police chief Wong Kim Wai said early investigations determined that the bus driver's carelessness and inability to control his vehicle were to blame for the collision.
PETALING JAYA : An express bus carrying 28 passengers including 20 students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) rammed into the back of a trailer on KM161.6 on the East Coast Expressway early this morning.
The bus was on its way from the Southern Integrated Transport Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to the Kuantan Sentral Terminal when the 1am incident occurred.
Maran police chief Wong Kim Wai said the bus, driven by a 38-year-old man, hit the back of the trailer on the left lane.
'The trailer was moving straight on the left lane when it was hit from behind by the bus.
'No injuries were reported among the victims, including the drivers of both vehicles and the lorry attendant.
'All the passengers were moved to another bus and continued their trip to Kuantan,' Kosmo reported him as saying.
Wong said early investigations determined that the bus driver's carelessness and inability to control his vehicle were to blame for the collision.
He said the investigation is ongoing under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
This morning's bus crash came a day after 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris were killed in another collision involving a bus and an MPV along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding.
UMPSA student council head Haykal Halid said the students on the bus reached the university's mosque at 3.56am.

Maran police chief Supt Wong Kim Wai said the incident occurred around 1am yesterday while the bus was en route from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur to Terminal Sentral Kuantan. 'The bus was in the left lane when it is believed to have collided with a trailer travelling in the same direction. Bus in Gerik crash clearly speeding, say police

Police said the road barrier penetrated the front left section of the bus, killing the students seated there. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The bus in the Gerik crash that killed 15 university students was clearly speeding based on dashcam footage from a car, say police. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said investigators have received the footage from the owner of the car, whose statement will be taken soon, Harian Metro reported. 'The recording clearly shows how the bus was speeding. What made matters worse was when a road barrier penetrated the front of the bus after it toppled over. 'That is why passengers seated on the left side of the bus were among those who lost their lives, because the barrier penetrated all the way to the passenger seats. 'We leave it to our investigating officers to go through the recording and take the owner's statement,' said Noor Hisam. He added that the statements of survivors would also be taken, after several of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students claimed the bus was speeding before the crash. He said the site of the crash was a downhill stretch of a hilly road and that the accident occurred around midnight after some rain. 'Based on my observation, there were no clear road markings and the area is very dark. We're still probing whether the cause of the crash was due to negligence or technical issues.' Noor Hisam also said most of the survivors were found in a drain next to the barrier, while the bodies of most of those killed were still in the bus after the crash. A total of 15 UPSI students died from the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. The bus was carrying 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant. A couple, along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were travelling in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.
