‘High risk' sex offender jailed for breaching orders

A 'high risk registered sex offender' has been jailed for persistently breaching an order to prevent further offences by using aliases online. The 24-year-old, who appeared on the court list as Luke Hardy but identifies as Zoe Hardy and was referred to using female pronouns during the sentencing hearing, breached Sexual Harm Prevention Orders (SHPO), Teesside Crown Court heard. The first order was imposed in 2022 after Hardy was sentenced to a community order for three counts of making indecent images of children, including eight of the most serious kind, which were found on his mobile phone. Hardy breached that order in 2023 by deleting his internet history on his phone, including erasing dating apps from the handset, which was against the provisions of the order. Later that same year, Hardy breached the order by registering on a pornography site using the name Lucy which was prohibited as that was an alias which he had not notified the police about. The court heard that Hardy explained to police at the time how he was 'struggling with her sexuality, sometimes feeling like Luke, sometimes like Lucy'. Saba Shan, prosecuting, said the latest breach occurred in July when officers visited Hardy's home in Yarm Lane, Stockton after officers had designated him a 'high risk sex offender', and found he had used the name 'Zoe' as part of his identification on a dating app, in an email account and his name on a mobile game. It was understood that the breach occurred because Hardy did not inform police about any use of an alias online. Judge Richard Clews jailed Hardy for eight months for breaching the SHPOs and an extra month when he activated part of previous suspended sentences. He told the defendant: 'It is appropriate to describe the breaches of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order as persistent and deliberate.' He sentenced on the basis that there had been no harm caused to anyone else by Hardy breaching the orders.

Officer banned after crashing in police station car park and lying about it

An ex-Swindon police officer has been barred from ever returning to the force after he crashed his colleague's car at the station and then lied about it. Former Swindon PC Thomas Gibbs would have been sacked from Wiltshire Police if he had not already left the force, it was concluded at a misconduct hearing. It comes after the Gibbs, who worked at the police force for over five years, crashed his colleague's personal car into a metal barrier at Gablecross Police Station. The officer had been instructed to drive the car due to his colleague being ill, but after hitting the barrier and damaging the car, he did not report the incident. Gibbs was then asked directly about the matter by Wiltshire Police, and he denied having any involvement. The barrier at Gablecross Station, which Gibbs drove the car into. (Image: Google Maps) Following the misconduct hearing held on Monday, August 4, all allegations made against the former PC were upheld, and he was found to have committed "gross misconduct" due to his lies breaching the standards Wiltshire Police expects of officers. Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper said: 'We expect the highest standards of honesty and integrity from our officers. "Former PC Gibbs breached these key principles by not only failing to take account for his actions but also lying about his involvement in the incident. 'Taking accountability for our actions is one of the cornerstones to maintaining the trust and confidence of the public, and we will continue to hold to account police officers and staff who fail to do so.' According to LinkedIn, Thomas Gibbs first joined the police force in July 2018 as a special constable and then worked for four and a half years as a police officer before becoming a sergeant. Wiltshire Police states that he was working in the role of response officer at the time of the incident, which would have cost him his job. Following the traffic collision incident, Gibbs resigned from Wiltshire Police and now works at National Highways as a Traffic Officer. He has been placed on the national barred list, which means he will not be able to work at Wiltshire Police or in any policing role in the future.

'We are broken': Family of man who died in police cell want to give him 'a beautiful send off'

An appeal has been launched to give a man who died in police custody 'a beautiful send off'. Ellis Rocks, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell on Friday (August 1) and died at the weekend. His mother Paula Wilkie has paid tribute to her 'beautiful boy'. In a Facebook post, she said 'nothing can fix this pain we feel', adding: "We are broken as a family. May my little boy rest in peace." Mr Rocks was arrested after being approached by officers inside the Britannia Hotel on Almond Brook Road in Standish, Wigan, at around 8.35pm last Thursday (July 31). Mr Rocks was taken to a custody cell in Wigan at 9.15pm, where staff later found him unresponsive at 2.30am. He was taken to hospital, where he sadly died on Sunday morning (August 3). The force had to clarify the reason for Mr Rock's arrest after Tommy Robinson and a number of others made claims on social media he was arrested outside a hotel being used to house migrants. An investigation has been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Now Grant Cornish, partner of Ellis' sister Sasha has started a fundraiser to pay for his funeral. He posted: "I'm starting this go fund me for my partner Sasha and her mum Paula and dad Stuart. For the tragic sudden loss of Ellis Alexander Rocks. So many people have asked Paula can they donate, but she said the family was too proud. But after many people saying they want to contribute for a beautiful send off that Ellis deserves, I have been given permission from the family to do this. He deserves an amazing send off. Any donation will be appreciated, Thank you." GMP said its Professional Standards Directorate is cooperating with the IOPC on the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Ellis who have endured the most heartbreaking last few days. What is most important is that they get all the answers to what has led to his death. We will fully cooperate with the IOPC's enquiries. "Incidents where someone sadly dies following police contact are rare but are nevertheless deeply impactful for that person's loved ones. "It is important following a death in our custody that a thorough and independent investigation takes place, and I urge people to not rush to judgement before the full facts are established." The IOPC said it has reviewed CCTV from the custody suite and body-worn video footage from officers involved in the arrest and has spoken to GMP about receiving initial accounts from officers involved. A spokesperson said: "This was a tragic incident in which Mr Rocks has sadly died and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. "GMP referred this matter to us, and as he was in the custody of police at the time he became unwell, it is important there is a thorough and independent investigation." Clarifying the circumstances around Mr Rocks' arrest, GMP said: "The arrest did not come in connection with any protest activity. The man was arrested at a location which does not house asylum seekers, and there were no protests in relation to this in Wigan on the day the man was taken into custody."
