J.D. Power: Car buyers are still interested in EVs and Tesla alternatives

Despite the whirlwind of headlines about auto tariffs, EV mandates, and even the potential loss of EV tax credits, Americans are still very much interested in EVs. Including those not named Tesla.
Consumer research group J.D. Power's latest EV consideration study found that 24% of car shoppers said they are "very likely" to consider purchasing an EV, and 35% said they are "somewhat likely," which is largely unchanged from a year ago.
J.D. Power polled 8,164 consumers in January through April who intend to buy or lease a new vehicle in the next 12 months.
"Despite the market volatility, EVs have found a solid ground for consumer consideration,' J.D. Power executive director of EV practice Brent Gruber said in a statement.
Interestingly, with more options available, consumers are shopping across brands. Buyers are cross-shopping on average 2.9 brands when looking at EVs, versus two brands seen with gas-powered cars.
And they are increasingly looking at EVs other than Tesla. J.D. Power found that the top five vehicle brands cross-shopped among purchasers interested in the Model Y SUV are Honda, Ford, BMW, Toyota, and Cadillac, in that order.
"Manufacturers that didn't have electric vehicles before have now rounded out their portfolios with EV products, and so consumers are considering products from those other brands," Gruber said in an interview with Yahoo Finance.
Honda's popular Prologue EV, Ford's Mustang Mach-E, and BMW products like the iX, i4, and i5 are gaining traction. Cadillac's Lyriq has been GM's top-selling EV for some time now.

Gruber added that Tesla brand issues may be behind the cross-shopping.
"There's certainly some consumer sentiment for and against some of the actions taken by Elon Musk in the political arena," Gruber said. "So we have seen some impact from that."
But Gruber believes Tesla sales have been affected by the availability of new products coming to market, like the Prologue and Lyriq, rather than perceived brand issues.
The broader EV market, however, faces a big headwind: the potential loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. House Republicans are pushing a bill that would end the EV tax credit, a signature component of former President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act.
Not surprisingly, Gruber believes this would create a major impact on EV sales.
"You're potentially looking at a double whammy with tariffs and the elimination of the tax credit," Gruber said. "You're talking about what is conceivably a $12,000-plus swing on the price of an electric vehicle. So if those tax credits go away, you're going to see probably a slowdown in the level of interest for electric vehicles."
Of course, it's not just a problem for consumers. It's also a major problem for automakers. Per current EPA rules, automakers need to sell EVs to meet federal emissions targets. If they do not, they're on the hook for billions in fines or must purchase carbon credits from companies like Tesla.
"We believe the credits are critical for automakers to achieve current federal and state emissions standards," a spokesperson for the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group that represents several major automakers, said to Yahoo Finance.

One Toyota RAV4 Model Year Outperforms The Rest In Reliability

Toyota recently revealed an all-new generation of the RAV4, and it's expected to be just as popular as the five generations preceding it. A key to the success of the RAV4 has been the crossover's exceptional reputation for reliability. However, not every used RAV4 is automatically a smart buy, with some model years being a lot more reliable than others. We've done the research to find the single most reliable RAV4 model year. We consulted reputable sources like Car Complaints, J.D. Power, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Here, we scoured through consumer complaints and recalls. Importantly, we took into account both the severity of complaints/recalls and the total number of them, since not every automotive recall is serious enough to significantly affect long-term reliability. Looking at Toyota RAV4 reliability records by year, we have also excluded RAV4s from the 2021 model year and newer, as these model years are too new to accurately assess how dependable they'll be. All things considered, the 2018 model is what we consider the best year for the Toyota RAV4, if reliability is the key consideration. This model is the last of the fourth-generation RAV4, and often, the most recent model years of a specific generation are especially reliable, since manufacturers will have had enough time to sort through any early issues. The 2018 RAV4 has just 33 issues logged on Car Complaints, lower than all other fourth-gen RAV4s. On the NHTSA, it has three recalls, but two are for incorrect load-carrying labels, which have nothing to do with reliability. The third is for an unsecured battery that could short circuit, but all that's needed here is a replacement of the battery clamp sub-assembly, which has very likely been done by now. Furthermore, a stellar quality and reliability rating of 88 out of 100 from J.D. Power confirms this RAV4's high dependability. No vehicle is perfect, and the 2018 RAV4 does have some issues related to jerky transmission shifts, brake problems, and stalling issues. However, these appear isolated, with no clear pattern of any major faults. A large part of the 2018 RAV4's solidity comes down to its straightforward mechanicals. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has no turbochargers or electrification to worry about. Although it produces just 176 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, it has good mid-range torque, and with proper maintenance, this engine can last for many thousands of miles. Complementing the reliable four-pot is a simple six-speed automatic transmission; this is a conventional torque converter automatic, unlike the RAV4 Hybrid, which uses a CVT. Speaking of the hybrid, it makes 194 hp combined, so is a better performer. While reliable, there are more components in the hybrid's powertrain, so we'd trust the standard 2.5L with front-wheel drive for the most risk-free RAV4 experience. According to RepairPal, the annual repair cost for the 2018 Toyota RAV4 works out to $424, whereas the average for all compact SUVs is almost $100 more annually, at $521. Not only is the 2018 Toyota RAV4 reliable, but it won't cost much to maintain, either. Adding to the reasonable running costs is the FWD model's commendable efficiency, at 23/30/26 mpg city/highway/combined. With AWD, the 2018 RAV4 returns 22/28/25 mpg. The EPA estimates annual fuel costs of $1,800 for the FWD RAV4, assuming you cover 15,000 miles per year. This figure is also based on the current price of a gallon of gas, so is subject to change. According to Kelley Blue Book, a base 2018 Toyota RAV4 LE will cost just under $16,000 today, compared to its original MSRP of $27,464. The range-topping Platinum model will be approximately $21k today. These low prices, combined with the Toyota RAV4's reliability, make the 2018 model quite tempting. Those prices will get you behind the wheel of an exceptionally reliable and practical crossover that can still last for many years. Yes, the fourth-gen RAV4 isn't the most exciting vehicle on the planet, but most RAV4 customers are more than willing to trade a thrilling drive for the peace of mind that comes with owning a Toyota. Almost any Toyota RAV4 can be considered reliable if cared for, but there are a few other best years for the Toyota RAV4 in terms of sheer reliability. 2000 Toyota RAV4: First Generation The most recent first-gen RAV4 is now 25 years old, but it has a strong reliability record and few major complaints. Look out for a problematic airbag inflator, which is the most serious issue. Other than that, it's a frill-free crossover, and you can even get in sporty two-door form. It's one of the best RAV4 years. 2004 Toyota RAV4: Second Generation A mere 20 complaints were logged on Car Complaints for the 2004 RAV4. The 2002 model has 519 complaints, showing just how much reliability improved in a fairly short space of time. Part of the second generation, the 2004 model introduced a new 2.4-liter engine, which was more powerful but still reliable. The only red flag is the 2004 RAV4's involvement in the Takata airbag debacle, which affected millions of vehicles from various brands. If you look for a 2004 RAV4, make sure it has had its airbags checked. Other than that, it can be considered one of the RAV4's best years. There are few more logical used car purchases than a Toyota RAV4. With the all-new sixth-generation model recently revealed, we expect a new generation of buyers to enjoy the safety, reliability, and value imbued across all generations of the RAV4. The 2018 model, in particular, represents Toyota RAV4 dependability at its best. It appears that some distance from Washington, D.C. has given Tesla CEO Elon Musk some clarity about President Donald Trump and his economic agenda. Trump has repeatedly said that balancing the budget was one of his top priorities. In fact, during a recent cabinet meeting, he said that his drive to balance the federal budget was one of the main reasons he won so handily last November. The Department of Government Efficiency was supposed to be a big part of that drive. Related: Trump decision leaves Elon Musk in a serious bind In the same meeting, Musk bemoaned the $2 trillion annual deficit the U.S. government is running, noting that the debt's interest payments exceed the annual U.S defense budget. But that cabinet meeting was three months ago, and since then, a lot has changed about the president's priorities, as well as Musk's. The number one mission on the White House agenda right now is getting the federal spending budget passed by the Republican controlled Congress. Trump has described his bill as big and beautiful, but the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office says it would increase the federal deficit by $3.8 trillion over the next decade. There aren't enough DOGE cuts in the world to pay for extending the Trump tax cuts while increasing entitlement and defense spending. Trump's claim that tariffs would help balance the budget has also proven specious. Musk recently left his post as the head of DOGE, returning to his work at Tesla and SpaceX. Last week, he told CBS, "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing." Musk once made it a point to sport a red hat that read 'Trump Was Right About Everything,' but now he says he is a free thinker. "It's not like I agree with everything the administration does...I mean, I agree with much of what the administration does, but we have differences of opinion on the things that I don't entirely agree with," Musk told CBS. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it, you know you did wrong. You know it," Musk tweeted out. Musk tweeted that Tuesday afternoon before the daily scheduled White House press briefing, which gave Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt a chance to respond on behalf of the White House. Leavitt, who has had no issue being combative with people who have questioned the administration in the past, took a more respectful tone with Musk. "The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn't change the president's bill. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he's sticking to it," Leavitt said. The budget isn't the only issue where the White House and Musk clash. In early April, Musk went after Trump Senior Advisor Peter Navarro over tariffs, before Navarro returned fire and Trump backed Navarro. Since then, Musk's criticisms have been more muted. It's something he acknowledged in the CBS interview. "It's difficult for me to bring that up in an interview, because it creates a buildup of tension. So I'm stuck in a bind where I don't want to speak up against the administration, but I also don't want to take responsibility for everything the administration is doing," he said. How Americans are taking control of their finances in today's economy

The current economy is changing how Americans manage their money, according to new research. A recent survey of 2,000 general population Americans revealed that eight in 10 (77%) have changed the way they manage their finances as a result of ongoing economic conditions. With the majority (86%) feeling that the economy remains uncertain - and six in 10 (58%) believing a recession is inevitable - people are doubling down on predictability, stability and long-term control when it comes to their spending. Commissioned by Affirm and conducted by Talker Research, results found that half (50%) want to keep cash available for unexpected expenses or financial uncertainty, two in five (41%) want to manage their budget with fixed, predictable payments, and over a third (36%) are thinking more long-term than ever about their finances. This is unsurprising, given the average respondent predicts today's financial uncertainty will last for 10 more months. In response to these challenges, two in five (39%) are prioritizing strategies like avoiding credit card interest or fees. Americans are also taking active steps to strengthen their financial know-how. More than one in four (28%) are improving their financial literacy, nearly one in four (23%) are exploring how to make different payment options work for them and about one in five (19%) are seeking more value from their financial providers to stay ahead in today's climate. Additionally, most respondents (83%) are focused on what they can control with their finances. "Control means prioritizing predictability," said Vishal Kapoor, Affirm's SVP of Product. "That's why nearly half of consumers (49%) named 'no surprise fees' as their top priority when making purchases this year. Affirm is built to support this need - with transparent terms and no late or hidden fees, we help people spend smarter and plan with confidence." In addition to "no surprise fees," just over two in five respondents (41%) pointed to interest-free offers, and roughly one in three (35%) valued the ability to spread payments out over time - further underscoring their long-term mindset. Over a quarter (27%) highlighted the need for clear timelines for when payments are due, while two in five (41%) emphasized a need to manage their budget with fixed, predictable payments. All of these priorities tie back to what respondents find important when managing their money in the current economic climate - control, predictability and total clarity when managing their money. "Consumers clearly want more from their financial tools. They want payment solutions that help them manage their budgets, avoid surprises and stay financially resilient," Kapoor added. "That's exactly what we were built for. From options like 0% APR offers to predictable monthly payments, we're giving people greater flexibility and peace of mind as they plan for the future." Survey methodology: Talker Research surveyed 2,000 general population Americans; the survey was commissioned by Affirm and administered and conducted online by Talker Research between March 21–25, 2025. We are sourcing from a non-probability frame and the two main sources we use are: Traditional online access panels - where respondents opt-in to take part in online market research for an incentiveProgrammatic - where respondents are online and are given the option to take part in a survey to receive a virtual incentive usually related to the online activity they are engaging in Those who did not fit the specified sample were terminated from the survey. As the survey is fielded, dynamic online sampling is used, adjusting targeting to achieve the quotas specified as part of the sampling plan. Regardless of which sources a respondent came from, they were directed to an Online Survey, where the survey was conducted in English; a link to the questionnaire can be shared upon request. Respondents were awarded points for completing the survey. These points have a small cash-equivalent monetary value. Cells are only reported on for analysis if they have a minimum of 80 respondents, and statistical significance is calculated at the 95% level. Data is not weighted, but quotas and other parameters are put in place to reach the desired sample. Interviews are excluded from the final analysis if they failed quality-checking measures.
