‘Brouhaha' breaks out at Bears-Dolphins practice

The post 'Brouhaha' breaks out at Bears-Dolphins practice appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Chicago Bears are supposed to look like a competent football team after a dysfunctional 2024-25 season. The Miami Dolphins are under suffocating pressure to earn their first playoff victory since before George W. Bush's inauguration. These two embattled franchises each boast varying levels of promise entering the new campaign, but they must fight against history as well as the multitude of challenges that come from competing in the modern NFL. Their paths converged in a joint practice on Friday, and the collective hunger was obvious. Tension filled Halas Hall, as a fracas broke out between the two squads. One of the reporters who was present for the action relayed what happened in Lake Forest, Illinois. 'Big brouhaha at Dolphins-Bears joint practice,' the Sun Sentinel's David Furones posted on X. 'Started with {Bears safety} Kevin Byard and {Dolphins wide receiver}Dee Eskridge. 'Then, {Bears cornerback} Tyrique Stevenson and {Dolphins center} Aaron Brewer got into it with Stevenson's hand in Brewer's facemask. Mike McDaniel, Tyreek Hill (not practicing because of an oblique injury) got in there to separate guys.' Bears are eying big change in 2025 These type of skirmishes are quite common when opposing teams square off at practice, but it is important that someone steps in before things get out of hand. Perhaps inspired by New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who came away with a bloody cheek after trying to break up a fight, McDaniel came dashing onto the field to restore order. Both Miami and Chicago have too much on the line this year to risk injury or expend unnecessary energy. Focus is essential, even in training camp. Maybe especially in training camp. The Dolphins had a good chance to make the playoffs if Tua Tagovailoa did not suffer another concussion, but the Bears' problems ran much deeper. They lost seven games by one possession last season, lacking discipline on the sidelines and on the field during what was a painful stretch of football. Therefore, it is critical that new head coach Ben Johnson weeds out the team's bad habits before the regular season begins. The indications are that Chicago fared well against Miami on Friday, suggesting that the franchise is making progress. The real tests will begin in September, but Johnson and company must build good habits right now. The Bears will get another shot at the Dolphins when the squads collide on Sunday afternoon in Soldier Field. Although quarterback Caleb Williams and most of the team's starters will not play in the preseason matchup, fans are still expecting to see the same intensity that Chicago brought to the joint practice. Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel updates Darren Waller's progress after coming out of retirement

The post Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel updates Darren Waller's progress after coming out of retirement appeared first on ClutchPoints. Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is hopeful for Darren Waller's return to the field after coming out of retirement. Waller initially stepped away from the NFL in 2023 when he represented the New York Giants. This came after he spent nine seasons with three teams since his professional career kicked off in 2015. However, he changed course as the Dolphins acquired him from the Giants in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. He provides depth to the tight end room with his experience, which might garner him some playing time in the 2025 regular season. Waller has some things to fulfill before actually playing in a game for Miami. He is on the PUP list as it indicates he hasn't returned to form to practice with the team yet, which McDaniel was more than willing to give an update during Friday's press conference. 'To make sure he's on top of all the nuances of the position. So when he gets on the field, all things that we can control from an assignment standpoint, he's accepted that challenge. I think his teammates have seen that he's really on his stuff. I think he's low key, a super cerebral player that likes to show off his mental capabilities, or at least he has since he's been here,' McDaniel said. 'So he's on it, and he hasn't been shy of letting his teammates know how honored he is. Specifically, when they make a mistake. So we're doing all the little things. I think he's in a good spot, and we're excited to see him once he gets on the field.' What's next for Mike McDaniel, Dolphins It's a positive update for Mike McDaniel to have, knowing how impactful Darren Waller might be for the Dolphins. Waller's last season saw him take part in 12 games for the Giants. He made 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown, missing five games due to a hamstring injury. Waller hasn't returned to the Pro Bowl since 2020 when he played for the Las Vegas Raiders. He made a career-high 107 receptions for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns. While he may be past the peak of his powers, he has plenty of experience at age 32, which could benefit Miami's offense. The Dolphins will hope to return to postseason action after missing the playoffs last year. They finished with an 8-9 record, something they will look to improve on in the 2025 campaign. Dolphins' Alexander Mattison puts positive spin on fumbling issues during joint practice

The post Dolphins' Alexander Mattison puts positive spin on fumbling issues during joint practice appeared first on ClutchPoints. Alexander Mattison and the Miami Dolphins did not have a pleasant day during Friday's joint practice against the Chicago Bears. The team committed numerous mistakes throughout the session, especially Mattison and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The latter threw three interceptions while the former committed two fumbles, which could be a sign that the offense has plenty of room for improvement ahead of the 2025 NFL regular season. Mattison reflected on his mistakes and the team's errors after the joint practice in a press conference, per reporter David Furones. 'It's something that I definitely got to go take a look at the film. There was a time in those moments where it didn't feel like I balled away. I just got to put away quick, quicker. I have to, you know, hone in on the fundamentals that I have,' Mattison said. 'But, yeah, we'll take a look at the film. See what it looked like, see what I could have done better. And, you know, it's one of those things where, you know, just have to take adversity and look, there's opportunity to grow. So that's what I'm looking to do. When I go up that tape on it and see kind of where I was at those plays in those situations.' What's next for Alexander Mattison, Dolphins It will be a performance to forget for Alexander Mattison and the Dolphins in their joint practice against the Bears. However, it gives them a chance to correct their errors and look better to start their preseason slate. Mattison joined the Dolphins this offseason, moving on from the Las Vegas Raiders after one season. He mainly served as the second option in the running back unit, making 132 rushes for 420 yards and four touchdowns. He was also active in pass-catching situations, making 36 receptions for 294 yards and one score. Miami missed the playoffs last season after finishing with an 8-9 record. Injuries and inconsistent play prevented them from making the postseason for the third consecutive year. Despite this, they will hope for better fortunes as they aspire to be strong contenders in the AFC. The Dolphins will face the Bears in their preseason opener, which will take place on Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. ET. After that, they will face the Detroit Lions on Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. ET and Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. ET.
