Laos to hold ceremony to celebrate inscription of national park as world heritage site
VIENTIANE: (Bernama-Xinhua) Authorities in central Laos' Khammuan province plan to hold a grand ceremony at the end of 2025 to celebrate the inscription of Hin Nam No National Protected Area as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the country's fourth World Heritage site, Xinhua reported.
According to the Vientiane Mai newspaper on Tuesday (July 29), authorities held a meeting on Monday to discuss plans for a grand ceremony celebrating the inscription of the national park.
The site holds special significance as it forms part of a transboundary extension of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a World Heritage Site in Vietnam, the first transboundary natural World Heritage Site shared between Laos and Vietnam.
Authorities also plan to intensify efforts to raise public awareness about the importance and benefits of natural World Heritage sites and encourage local communities to take part in their protection and management.
They will work with relevant sectors to develop sustainable strategies for conservation and development, while improving local livelihoods.
Additionally, the province aims to transform Hin Nam No National Park into a sustainable, world-class tourist destination.
Hin Nam No National Protected Area is a natural marvel that spans an area of 94,121 hectares in southeastern Laos.
This biodiverse and stunningly beautiful protected zone shelters some spectacular and mysterious biodiversity, and harbours ecosystems that include pristine forests, majestic waterfalls, and intricate cave systems.
The park is home to an incredible range of species, including rare and exotic birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants, and is home to several ethnic minority groups. - Bernama-Xinhua

3rd LD Writethru: Britain's Birmingham Airport runway temporarily closed following aircraft incident
LONDON, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Birmingham Airport confirmed on Wednesday that its runway has been temporarily closed following an aircraft incident. According to airport police, one person sustained minor injuries. The emergency involved a small aircraft that carried out an emergency landing at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time. Woodgate Aviation, owner of the plane, said in a statement that one of its Beechcraft fixed-wing aircraft had developed landing gear problems on the journey from Birmingham to Belfast. "The aircraft returned to Birmingham and made an emergency landing and the main under-carriage collapsed on touch down," the company said. The airport said that passengers already on site will continue to receive updates, while those scheduled to travel later in the day are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement that it is investigating the incident at Birmingham Airport. This incident comes on the heels of widespread flight disruptions across major British airports last week, which brought air traffic to a standstill. Birmingham Airport is the seventh-largest airport in Britain, having handled approximately 11.5 million passengers in 2023, according to figures published on its official website.

NAIROBI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenya said on Wednesday that it will harness the power of sports to boost the tourism sector, underscoring the country's commitment to diversifying the sector beyond wildlife and beach products. Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the East African nation will be promoted as a premier tourist destination by aligning the country's prowess in athletics, rugby, and other sports endeavors with tourism promotion efforts. "We also have world-class sports facilities that appeal to international visitors," Miano said during the signing ceremony of a partnership between state-owned Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and the Football Kenya Federation. According to data from the tourism ministry, Kenya received 2.4 million foreign visitors in 2024, making it one of the main sources of foreign exchange alongside tea and horticulture. June Chepkemei, chief executive officer of the KTB, noted that Kenya has already experienced an upsurge of international sports visitors as a result of co-hosting the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship together with Tanzania and Uganda, which kicked off on Aug. 2.
