Russia Factory Blast Kills 24, Injures Over 150 In Ryazan Region

Last Updated: Emergency crews were dispatched immediately to the site, where they worked through the weekend to sift through debris. A deadly explosion at an industrial plant in Russia's Ryazan region has claimed 24 lives and injured at least 157 people, according to an update from the Associated Press on Monday. The blast occurred on Friday at the Elastik plant, located in the Shilovsky district, approximately 155 miles southeast of Moscow. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately to the site, where they worked through the weekend to sift through debris in search of survivors and further casualties, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed. The scale of the destruction was evident in images released by authorities, showing the plant's gunpowder workshop completely reduced to rubble. According to state news agency RIA Novosti, the explosion was triggered after a fire broke out in the gunpowder section of the facility, igniting volatile materials stored on-site. The blast caused significant structural damage and engulfed large portions of the factory in flames. As rescue and investigation efforts continue, Monday was declared a day of mourning in the Ryazan region to honour the victims of the disaster. Further details emerged from the 112 Telegram channel, which has close ties to Russian law enforcement. It reported that the explosion may have been caused by the detonation of a rogue shell. The channel also revealed that the factory had previously received multiple warnings from authorities regarding labour safety violations, raising questions about oversight and accountability. Russia's Investigative Committee, the country's top criminal investigation body, has launched a formal criminal case into potential violations of industrial safety regulations. Officials emphasised that there is currently no indication of Ukrainian involvement, pointing instead to internal safety failures as the most likely cause of the incident. This incident marks one of the deadliest industrial accidents in Russia in recent years, highlighting ongoing concerns about enforcement of workplace safety protocols in high-risk industries. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trinamool Leader Anubrata Mondal Gets Bail In Police Officer Abuse Case

Bolpur: A court in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Monday granted bail to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal after he surrendered in the court and moved an anticipatory relief petition in connection with the case of alleged use of abusive and derogatory language during a telephonic conversation with a police officer. Mondal's plea on health grounds was accepted by Judicial Magistrate Banikbrata Dutta of Bolpur Subdivision Court on a surety of Rs 1,000 and on condition that he will continue to cooperate with the probe and meet the investigating officer (IO) when summoned, court officials said. In a leaked four-minute telephonic conversation between Mondal and Bolpur police station inspector-in-charge Litan Halder on May 29 this year, the authenticity of which PTI couldn't independently verify, the Birbhum Trinamool Congress leader was heard hurling invectives at the police officer and threatening his wife and mother. Left red-faced by the audio-clip, the party issued him a four-hour apology deadline and a suo motu FIR was lodged against him by the police. Mondal was issued police summons and his security details withdrawn. Faced with party annoyance, Mondal tendered written apologies to both the police officer and the TMC state president Subrata Bakshi but avoided responding to the initial summons from Bolpur Police. On June 6, seven days after the purported audio clip surfaced, Mondal appeared before the Bolpur SDPO where his cell phone was reportedly inspected. Mondal arrived at the Bolpur Subdivision Court around 10.40 am on Monday for his voluntary surrender and his bail hearing was taken up post 2 pm. "The court granted him bail considering his age and the physical ailments he suffers from. There are no pre-conditions to his bail," said Nupur Dutta Banerjee, Mondal's counsel. "I had submitted before the court that the IO in this case did not duly comply with the notice served to Mondal under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which outlines the procedure for police to issue a notice to individuals in cognisable offenses where arrest isn't immediately necessary," said Phiroj Pal, government lawyer, confirming that he opposed the bail prayer. "Secondly, we are still not privy to the police's case diary (CD) and have no idea how far the investigations in this case have so far progressed. We wanted the court to wait till we had the CD in our hand," he added. Pal said that the court was prima facie satisfied with the petitioner's submission that Mondal has cooperated with the police and that there has been no progress in the probe for a formidable period. In September 2024, Mondal was granted bail in the multi-crore cattle smuggling case when he stepped out of the Tihar Jail after remaining imprisoned for over two years.

Mumbai Police files charge sheet against ex-Religare chair Rashmi Saluja, 3 others in ESOP case

Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police on Monday filed a charge sheet against former Religare Enterprises chairperson Rashmi Saluja and three others in connection with alleged irregularities in the allotment of employee stock options (ESOP) at Care Health Insurance Ltd . A dispute over the ESOP allotment to Saluja at the insurance subsidiary had escalated into a legal battle between Religare's then management and the Burmans who were pursuing to take over the financial services company. The charge sheet filed at a local magistrate's court names Saluja, former Religare finance chief Nitin Aggarwal, ex-group general counsel Nishant Singhal and a Mumbai-based office assistant, Vaibhav Gawli. The EOW investigated the matter after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September last year filed a complaint alleging that Saluja and her colleagues conspired to derail the takeover bid for Religare by misusing ESOP allotments and orchestrating a police complaint filed by the office assistant. Gawli was allegedly promised cash and shares in return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Saluja, who has challenged the EOW's FIR in the Bombay HC, on Monday called the allegations "mala fide and flawed". She told ET: "When I have never met Gawli or ever communicated with him, how could I get him to lodge a complaint against the Burmans? Also, how could ESOPs be treated as proceeds of crime? They were issued by the board and NRC (nomination & remuneration committee)...why aren't they being questioned?" According to investigators, the insurance regulator had rejected Care Health's proposal to issue 22.71 million stock options, valued at more than ₹250 crore, to Saluja. Still, the company's board in August 2022 granted the ESOPs to her at ₹45.32 per share, to be vested in three tranches. In the same meeting, the board also cleared a ₹300 crore rights issue. Live Events The regulator in November 2023 ruled that the ESOPs were granted in violation of sectoral guidelines that cap non-executive director compensation at ₹10 lakh without prior approval.
