Australia says it supports US strike, calls for return to diplomacy

'We support action that the U.S. has taken to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,' Wong said in a television interview with Seven Sunrise.
In a series of television and radio interviews on Monday, Wong said the strike was a unilateral action by its security ally the United States, and Australia was joining calls from Britain and other countries for Iran to return to the negotiating table.
'We do not want to see escalation,' she told reporters in Canberra.
There are around 2,900 Australians in Iran and 1,300 in Iraq who are seeking to leave.
Australia closed its embassy in Tehran on Friday, after Wong spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Australia has suspended bus evacuations from Israel after the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, but is making preparations for potential evacuations if air space in Israel re-opens, Wong said.
Australia said it has sent two defence planes to the Middle East in non-combat roles to assist civilian evacuations.
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said on Sunday he was examining the evidence surrounding Iran's nuclear enrichment programme, while Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called for a return to dialogue, Radio New Zealand reported.

Trump says he may skip G20 summit in SA, cites policy disapproval

Earlier this year, secretary of state Marco Rubio boycotted a G20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa, which has the G20 presidency from December 2024 to November 2025. Washington, under Trump and former president Joe Biden, has complained about the case brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice, where it accused Israel of genocide over its military assault in Gaza. Israel's assault has killed tens of thousands, caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and also led to accusations of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denied the accusations and cast its Gaza offensive as self-defence after a deadly October 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people and in which more than 250 were taken hostage. Diplomatic relations between the US and South Africa have also been strained under Trump due to the government's BEE policies to address the legacy of centuries of racial inequality. Ramaphosa, who has urged Trump to attend the G20 summit, rejected Washington's claims that South Africa will use its land policy to arbitrarily confiscate white-owned land. Reuters

Thai and Cambodian leaders head to Malaysia for peace talks

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia were set to hold talks in Malaysia on Monday to reach a ceasefire in their deadly border dispute, with the US saying its officials would assist in the peace process. Thailand's government said it was attending talks arranged by Malaysia in its role as chair of the regional Asean bloc, while Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the talks were co-organised by the US with the participation of China. US secretary of state Marco Rubio said state department officials were in Malaysia to assist peace efforts after President Donald Trump had earlier said he thought the two leaders wanted to settle the conflict. "We want the conflict to end as soon as possible," Rubio said in statement released late on Sunday in the US and early Monday in Asia. "State department officials are on the ground in Malaysia to assist the peace efforts." Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified since the killing in late May of a Cambodian soldier during a brief border skirmish. Border troops on the two sides were reinforced amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. Hostilities broke out last Thursday and have escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours in more than a decade. The death toll has risen above 30, including more than 20 civilians, while authorities report more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas.

ANWAR TO CHAIR TALKS Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had proposed ceasefire talks soon after the border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, and China and the United States also offered to assist in negotiations. Thailand had said it supported calls for a ceasefire in principle but wanted to negotiate bilaterally, while Cambodia had called for international involvement. Anwar said he expected to chair the negotiations after being asked by representatives of the two governments to try to find a peace settlement, state media agency Bernama reported. 'So, I'm discussing the parameters, the conditions, but what is important is (an) immediate ceasefire,' he said late on Sunday.
