Wiltshire firms welcome job opportunities in building sector
The initiative, led by the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), aims to attract skilled workers to the industry, including in Wiltshire.
The Building Materials Careers programme, launched earlier this year, is part of a broader effort to address recruitment challenges in the sector.
The initiative is part of a cross-industry collaboration involving more than 1,000 companies in the £51 billion sector.

The campaign aims to attract school leavers, trainees, Armed Forces veterans, and career changers to the industry.
BMF members have shared their career journeys on the bmcareers.com website to showcase the opportunities available in the sector.
The website also lists current vacancies in the industry.
John Newcomb, BMF CEO, said: "Manufacturers, suppliers, and merchants in Wiltshire's building materials sector need to be considered as the lifeblood of the construction industry, and our members are laying the groundwork now for the scale-up required to meet Government targets.
"Increased amounts of building materials from bricks and mortar to plasterboard and fixings will be needed by the construction industry if it is to meet the government's pledged 1.5 million homes."
The Building Materials Careers programme builds on the success of the BMF's Apprenticeship Pledge, which exceeded its target of securing 15,000 apprenticeship places within the sector by 2030, five years ahead of schedule.
Minister of State for Industry, Sarah Jones MP, said: "We are aware of the scale of the skills and workforce challenge in the construction sector and are working to address this across government.
"Initiatives such as the 'Make a Material Difference' campaign and the BMF Apprenticeship Pledge are helpful examples of existing industry programmes in this space, given the importance of both attracting new entrants to the sector and retaining them."

David Young, chief executive at BMF member company Bradfords, which operates across Wiltshire, said: "It is positive to see the Building Materials initiative gaining traction at the highest levels.
"It was a no-brainer for Bradfords to be involved."
John Carter, chief executive of STARK Building Materials UK Ltd, added: "Being a professional tradesperson takes a high degree of skill that is often misunderstood and overlooked when you consider a completed building project.
"The campaign complements the work that STARK UK is doing to promote and support the many opportunities in our sector."

Britain cancels extra border checks for animals ahead of UK-EU deal
LONDON (Reuters) -Britain is suspending the previously planned introduction of extra border checks on live animal imports from the European Union to ease trade ahead of the implementation of a deal agreed in May to reduce friction, the UK government said on Monday. Extra border checks on some animal and plant goods imported from Ireland will also be suspended. May's sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) deal, part of a wider reset in UK-EU relations, will reduce paperwork and remove routine border checks on plant and animal products moving between the UK and EU, while maintaining high food standards. However, the deal is yet to be implemented as details are still being negotiated. In the meantime, British traders must continue to comply with the terms of the UK's Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) that protect the country's biosecurity, including existing checks. The suspension of the introduction of additional border checks follows the announcement in June that checks on EU fruit and vegetable imports had been scrapped. A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs could not give a timeline for implementation of the SPS deal. When Britain left the EU's single market in 2021, the EU immediately enforced its rules, leading to port delays and prompting some British exporters to stop selling to the bloc. Britain was much slower implementing its post-Brexit border arrangements, and after repeated delays and confusion it started to set new rules in phases from January last year. FCA dismissed 12 staff members over misconduct allegations
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has officially dismissed 12 employees following allegations of misconduct, as revealed by data obtained through the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. According to the figures, a total of 38 staff members have faced disciplinary proceedings over the past three calendar years. In addition to the 12 dismissals, 26 employees received written warnings, comprising 16 first written warnings and ten final written warnings. FCA deputy chief executive Sarah Pritchard said: 'Failure to tackle toxic behaviours drives away good people, prevents staff from speaking up and undermines performance. It damages growth and enables financial misconduct. 'There is an important role for regulators to play in tackling these issues. This includes making sure that steps are taken to prevent 'rolling bad apples' – people moving from firm to firm without appropriate action being taken or without past serious non-financial misconduct being disclosed.' The report coincides with the FCA's July initiative to consult on new regulations aimed at addressing non-financial misconduct (NFM) within the financial services industry. The proposed framework intends to harmonise conduct standards for both banking and non-banking entities, particularly in relation to serious NFM issues such as bullying, harassment, and violence, which the FCA has classified as matters of regulatory significance. BESIX Watpac secures Adelaide Airport expansion contract
Australian construction company BESIX Watpac has secured the contract for the next stage of Adelaide Airport's infrastructure development, referred to as Project Flight. The project continues a partnership of 15 years, during which the company has completed six projects within the airport precinct. BESIX Watpac CEO Mark Baker said: 'We deliver certainty for our partners through our collaborative approach, specialist expertise, and productivity-enhancing approach to building that includes the strategic use of digital construction methods. This has led to repeat engagements across the sector and recognition through numerous industry awards.' The planned works are intended to support Adelaide Airport's long-term aviation strategy and respond to increasing passenger numbers. The expansion will include a series of targeted upgrades such as a larger check-in hall featuring advanced technology, a 10,000m² extension to the Northern Terminal, and a 5,500m² expansion of the Southern Terminal. The upgraded check-in area will include new kiosks and additional bag-drop facilities, enhancing the efficiency and experience for travellers, BESIX Watpac said in a press release. BESIX Watpac general manager Al Crosby said: 'Our specialist team in South Australia has consistently delivered great outcomes in partnership with Adelaide Airport, and their expertise will ensure another high-quality project is delivered together with the support of our local subcontractor network.' The company noted that it has undertaken projects at various Australian airports and in over 100 secure facilities. These projects have involved operational settings where safety, service continuity and commissioning were key requirements. The company has carried out works in landside, airside, sterile, and Border Agency sections of the airport. These included a major terminal expansion that was completed in 2021. Current work also includes upgrades to passenger screening and baggage handling systems. In June 2025, BESIX Watpac and its partners took part in constructing Belgium's first near-surface nuclear waste facility. Construction of the facility is scheduled to start shortly and will be executed in phases over the coming decades.
