Washington, D.C. men arrested after pursuit in stolen car ends in crash in Frederick County

CBS News26-05-2025

Four men from Washington, D.C., were arrested following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle and multiple crashes that led to a deputy being injured in Frederick County on Sunday, according to the county sheriff's office.
Around 3:30 a.m., a deputy attempted to stop several people who were suspected of tampering with vehicles in the area of Jordan Boulevard in New Market, and the suspects took off in two separate vehicles, the sheriff's office said.
As the deputy pursued the vehicles, one of them, which had been stolen from Carroll County, crashed into a tree, which also involved the patrol car. The deputy suffered minor injuries, law enforcement said.
Deputies said the second vehicle lost control and struck a parked, marked patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated. The deputy had exited the vehicle moments before the impact and was not injured, the sheriff's office said.
Deangelo Bubose, 18; Zaire Graves, 18; Dayneil Bullock, 21; and Darin Comer, 18, are facing charges of motor vehicle theft, malicious destruction of property, resisting arrest, and other traffic violations.
2 dead in I-70 crash in Frederick County
Two passengers in a box truck died after colliding with a tractor-trailer Sunday on I-70 in Frederick County, according to the Maryland State Police.
Troopers said a BMW SUV hit the rear of the box truck, which caused it to lose control across the center median and crash into the tractor-trailer heading in the opposite direction.
The two in the box truck died at the scene. The driver of the box truck and of the tractor-trailer were airlifted to Shock Trauma.
The box truck and the tractor-trailer caught fire after being knocked off the highway.
The crash closed all lanes -- eastbound and westbound -- in the New Market area for hours.
Another stolen vehicle ends in deadly crash
On May 10, a woman died after crashing head-on with a stolen vehicle in Howard County.
A 16-year-old from Laurel, Maryland, is facing auto manslaughter charges and vehicle theft, and three other juveniles left the scene. Bonnie Fuller Griffith, 69, was killed in the crash.
"Cases like this are especially tragic. This involved four young people, one of whom is now incarcerated," Howard County police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn said. "And we have a victim, a 69-year-old woman, who was going about her day, who has died as a result of her injuries—and she's got a family who is mourning that loss."
WJZ obtained video that shows the stolen Hyundai Sonata crossing the center line and slamming into a Tesla. From another camera, you can see the sedan swerving down Guilford Road, slamming into Griffith's car.
Police said the car was reported stolen days earlier in District Heights, Prince George's County.

Police working to authenticate video in homicide investigation of Maryland business owner

Anne Arundel County police are working to authenticate a video to determine if it's part of a homicide investigation where a business owner was tied up and set on fire in his truck. Police say two 18-year-olds were arrested after 67-year-old Edward Stephen Koza, the owner of Tropic Bay Aquatic Garden Center in Davidsonville, was found dead in a burned car in the parking lot. Jonah Poole and Kylee Dakes are facing first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first- and second-degree murder, and arson. They were supposed to have been at Southern High School's graduation this week. The video circulating on social media appears to show a young man matching Poole's description in the charging documents lighting a truck on fire. "Nobody deserves to die that way," Koza's neighbor told WJZ. During a court hearing Monday, Poole and Dakes were ordered to be held without bail. What happened? Anne Arundel County police say Poole and Dakes went to the Tropic Bay Aquatic Garden Center around closing time on Saturday, May 24, where the owner, Koza, was alone inside. Officers said the couple attacked Koza, tied him up, put him in his pickup truck, drove it to a nearby gas station to purchase gas, went back to the garden center, and set the truck on fire with Koza inside. After the vehicle fire was extinguished, investigators found Koza's body on the passenger side. "You have your whole life ahead of you, and you just threw it away for a couple of dollars?" Anne Arundel County resident Danielle Schline said. Anne Arundel County residents were stunned by the vicious crime in their small Davidsonville town. "This was not just a simple robbery or burglary," said Andrew Griffith. "They went pretty far." Suspect allegedly stole $11k from restaurant Days before the murder, on May 18, police said Poole allegedly broke into Pirates Cove restaurant in Galesville, caused about $6,000 in damage, and stole more than $11,000 from the safe. The restaurant said in a statement that Dakes was an employee there until May 13. People familiar with Poole believe he was a previous employee of Koza's at Tropic Bay, but WJZ is working to confirm that. An Anne Arundel County Public Schools newsletter that celebrates AVID seniors said Dakes was planning to attend Notre Dame of Maryland to study radiology and had received more than $200,000 in scholarships.

Justice Dept. Drops Biden-Era Push to Obtain Peter Navarro's Emails

The Justice Department has abruptly dropped its effort to force Peter Navarro, President Trump's trade adviser, to turn over hundreds of his emails dating to the first Trump administration to the National Archives, according to a court filing on Tuesday. The decision to drop the civil lawsuit was disclosed in a one-page notice filed in Federal District Court in the District of Columbia. The department offered no explanation for the move, but it is one of many recent actions it has taken to dismiss criminal and civil actions taken against Trump allies. Mr. Navarro, 75, had long resisted the government's request that he give the archives emails from his personal ProtonMail account relating to his role as a White House adviser, as required by the Presidential Records Act. Defiance is Mr. Navarro's default. He served about four months in the geriatric unit of a federal prison in Miami after refusing to comply with a subpoena to appear before a congressional committee investigating his false claims about the 2020 election. In 2022, the Biden Justice Department sued Mr. Navarro, one of the main architects of Mr. Trump's second-term tariff policy, to retrieve the communications. The lawsuit charged him with 'wrongfully retaining presidential records that are the property of the United States, and which constitute part of the permanent historical record of the prior administration.' The lawsuit accused Mr. Navarro of using his private email account to conduct public work, including an effort to influence the White House response to the pandemic. Those emails were needed to preserve the historical record, officials at the archives said. Mr. Navarro unsuccessfully petitioned the Supreme Court to dismiss the suit last year. A federal magistrate judge earlier reviewed about 900 messages, determining that more than 500 were not presidential records. He ordered additional hearings to decide how many of the remaining 350-plus emails needed to be turned over to the government. Mr. Navarro's lawyer did not immediately return a request for comment. Stanley Woodward, who represented Mr. Navarro in both his civil and criminal cases, recused himself after Mr. Trump appointed him in April to serve as associate attorney general.
