Ahead of the inauguration of the Jagannath Dham in West Bengal's Digha, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee participated in a Maha Yajna on Tuesday. The yajna, which commenced on April 25, was an essential part of the preparations for the temple's inauguration on Wednesday on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.During the ceremony, Banerjee offered prayers, performed the Purnahuti ritual and conducted the aarti herself. The Maha Yajna featured 100 quintals of mango wood and bel wood, symbolising spiritual growth and purification.
advertisementTwo quintals of ghee were offered for spiritual illumination. 60 Iskcon members and 35 priests participated in the event. Rajesh Daityapati and his team from the Puri Jagannath temple also participated in the yajna and will be present for the pran pratishtha of Lord Jagannath.
The inauguration ceremony, set to take place between 3 pm and 3.10 pm on Wednesday, will be attended by Banerjee and is expected to draw large crowds. The event aims to promote cultural and spiritual harmony, with the temple serving as a symbol of Bengali heritage and spirituality.
The Jagannath Dham in Digha is a replica of the iconic Puri Jagannath Temple. The temple, built in the Kalinga architectural style, is a grand structure made of pink sandstone from Rajasthan.advertisementThe construction of the temple, which spans 20 acres, was undertaken by the state government at a cost of Rs 250 crore. Over 800 skilled craftsmen from Rajasthan worked on the project, bringing their expertise in temple architecture to the fore. The temple complex features a bhog mandap (a room where food for offerings is cooked), Nat mandir (dance hall) and garbhagriha (inner sanctuary), with intricate carvings and statues of deities. A 34-foot-long 18-faced Arun pillar made of black stone stands tall in front of the temple entrance, topped with an Aruna idol. The temple's design is inspired by the Puri Jagannath Temple, with similar architectural features, including the Singhadwar, Byaghradwar, Hastidwar and Ashwadwar.Ahead of the temple inauguration, Banerjee said, "We are going to inaugurate the temple on Akshaya Tritiya that is on Wednesday. The type of architecture built by the workers is wonderful. It is same as Puri Jagannath Temple. Bengal is proud. Not only Bengal, the whole world will be proud of this."Skilled artisans from Puri will perform the idol consecration ceremony and daily flag-changing rituals, following traditional practices. The temple is expected to become a major pilgrimage site and tourist attraction in the region.Banerjee personally selected the site for the temple and announced its construction in 2019. The project was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is completed now.

Bengal makes minor tweaks to OBC list struck down by HC

1 2 Kolkata: Bengal's new OBC list, tabled by state govt in the assembly on Tuesday, has minor changes compared to the previous list. While the earlier list, struck down by the Calcutta High Court, had 113 OBC subgroups with 77 Muslim and 36 others, the new OBC list has 140 subgroups, 80 of them Muslim. Supreme Court is hearing a challenge by Bengal govt against the HC scrapping of the earlier list, impacting around 5 lakh OBC certificates. The state had told the SC that it would complete its fresh OBC survey by the end of June. The survey tabled on Tuesday also indicated that state is hearing representations from 50 more OBC groups. The percentage of Muslims in the new OBC list is 57.1. While there are 73.4% Muslims in the OBC 'A' category (in a total of 49 subgroups, 36 are Muslims and 13 non-Muslims), OBC 'B' has 48.3% Muslims (there are 91 subgroups, of which 44 are Muslims, and 47 are non-Muslims). The HC ruling had reduced 17% OBC reservations in the state to 7%. The report tabled on Tuesday allows Bengal govt to restore OBC reservation to 17%, allocating 7% for OBC 'A' and 10% for OBC 'B'. This is set to increase slightly with 50 additional groups being evaluated. The legal deadlock on the OBC issue had an overriding impact in Bengal, from pausing admissions to schools, colleges and universities to state govt recruitments. CM Mamata Banerjee, speaking in the assembly on Tuesday, had said that the issuance of OBC certificates for college admissions and govt jobs would resume immediately. "Many recruitment boards kept the process on hold due to the legal confusion. That will now be resolved," Banerjee had said, adding, "Backwardness, not religion, was the sole criterion in the fresh OBC survey." On Tuesday, Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari had alleged that the OBC list was flawed and stemmed from "appeasement politics". He said that there were only 11 Muslim groups out of 66 OBC groups before 2010. Adhikari went on to claim that OBC in Bengal meant 'one-sided beneficiary'. Questioning Adhikari's facts, Trinamool Congress had said in a statement on Tuesday: "Suvendu Adhikari, we all know that 'divide and rule' is the official policy of BJP, and your only agenda for the 2026 elections is to pit Hindus against Muslims. But CM Mamata Banerjee has made it crystal clear that backwardness, not religion, is the sole criterion for OBC status. The new list was prepared with that principle in mind. So stop misleading the people with your lies."

Asked Modi to stop Hasina from speaking, he said not possible due to social media: Yunus

LONDON: Chief adviser to the interim Bangladesh govt, Mohammad Yunus , told delegates at Chatham House Wednesday he had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop ousted Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina from 'speaking' after she fled to India but Modi replied that it was not possible because of social media. 'I said to PM Modi: 'You want to host her? I can't force you to abandon that policy, but please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing as the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry.' India is not doing what I asked. Modi's answer was: 'It is social media, we can't control it.' What can you say? It's an explosive situation. You can't just walk away by saying it's social media,' Yunus said. 'We want to build the best relationship with India – but somehow things go wrong all the time because of all fake news coming from the Indian press,' he said. 'Some people say it has connections with policy makers at the top. This is what makes Bangladesh very jittery. A whole barrage of things keep happening in cyber space.' Yunus said Awami League didn't need to be part of the 2026 elections as 'it isn't a political party'. He pledged to hold 'the most beautiful election ever'. 'If they can kill young people on the street, make people disappear, steal money, would you call them a political party? None of them has ever expressed remorse. For the safety of politics of this country, the nation has decided that, for time being, the activities of Awami League will be suspended until the trial is over,' he said, referring to the trial of perpetrators of violence under the Hasina regime. 'We have not banned Awami League. ' Protests marked Yunus' visit to Chatham House. 'How can he ban the Awami League? He is not even elected. He has no authority,' said one of the Bangladeshi diaspora protesters outside, chanting, 'Yunus terrorist'. One held a placard calling for the release of former Iskcon monk Chinmoy Prabhu.
