Crowds flock to celebrate the century-old Bun Festival in Hong Kong
Crowds flocked to the outlying Cheung Chau Island in Hong Kong to celebrate the Bun Festival, held each year in a century-old tradition to ward off evil and pray for peace and blessings.
The festivities began with a parade of children in costumes, called 'Piu Sik,' which translates as 'floating color.' Children dressed as legendary deities or historic characters are carried on stands above the gathered crowds, meandering through the island's narrow lanes.
The highlight of the festival comes at midnight with a 'bun-scrambling' competition, where climbers race up a tower covered with plastic buns. Whoever gets the most buns of greatest value wins the race. Buns near the top have higher value.
The competition was suspended for decades after an accident in 1978 when a bun tower collapsed and caused injuries. The tradition resumed in 2005.
Legend has it that the colorful custom began after a deadly plague devastated the island of Cheung Chau. Residents followed the local Taoist tradition of imploring the deities for help and used white steamed buns as offerings to drive away the evil spirits.
Nowadays, residents and visitors to the island eat the white steamed buns as part of the celebrations. They are called 'Ping On Bao' in Cantonese, meaning 'peace' buns, and are stamped with two red Chinese characters meaning 'peace' and 'safety.'

In one of the most notable moments in the festival's history, the crowd performed his hit Someone You Loved completely in his place, prompting the star to become emotional at the show of unity. As he finished his set, performing Hold Me While You Wait, he told the crowd: 'Glastonbury, I'm really sorry. I'm a bit annoyed with myself.' But the crowd replied by cheering him on by chanting "Oh Lewis Capaldi". Shortly after the set, Lewis said: 'I wanted to come back and to do Glastonbury because it is so incredible, so I just wanted to thank you all for coming out and watching us. 'Trump, The Twins President,' which just wrapped up three days of performances in the Chinese territory of Hong Kong, marries traditional Cantonese opera with a parody of modern political events, mostly involving Trump. Though the opera satirizes a range of political figures from China, the U.S. and elsewhere, the star of the show is Trump, who shimmied across the stage in a blond wig and eyebrows, blue suit and red tie to the delight of sold-out audiences at a 1,000-seat theater at the Xiqu Centre, a performing arts venue for Cantonese opera and Chinese traditional theater. The three-and-a-half-hour show began in 2019 but has been updated to reflect current events, most recently Trump's attempted assassination at a rally in Pennsylvania last summer and his heated Oval Office exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February. Sir Keir said he watched the series with his 14-year-old daughter and son, 16. He added: 'As a dad, I have not found it easy viewing.'
