Pulau Pangkor Emerge As Largest Contributor To Anchovy landings In Perak Last Year

IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pulau Pangkor has emerged as the largest contributor to anchovy landings in Perak with a record of 2,844.44 tonnes worth RM42.67 million in 2024. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia said the achievement underscores the significant role of Pulau Pangkor in the country's fisheries industry, especially the anchovy fishing sector. "Nationally, the anchovy landings in Malaysia in 2024 totalled 14,589.20 tonnes valued at RM164.89 million, referring to the same species, Ikan Bilis/Bunga Air, as categorised in official records. "Among the main producing states are Sabah (5,956.17 tonnes), Perak (2,852.91 tonnes), Kedah (1,818.98 tonnes) and Kelantan (992.65 tonnes)," the statement said. The statement also stated that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, had earlier conducted a working visit to the anchovy industry area on Pulau Pangkor earlier today. According to the DOF statement, Pulau Pangkor currently has 694 vessels registered in various operational zones, namely Zone A (462 vessels), Zone B (44 vessels), Zone C (168 vessels) and Zone C2 (20 vessels) which allows the landing of various fish species, including anchovies. The statement further said that apart from anchovies, statistics also showed that among the top 10 species landed in Manjung Selatan in 2024 were pelaring, tongkol (skipjack tuna), tamban sisek, selayang, kembong (Indian mackerel), cincaru, selar, white shrimp and squid, with a total landing value of RM644.08 million. 'Pulau Pangkor also contributes to Perak's aquaculture sector with a production of 7,056.40 tonnes in 2024 through brackish water pond farming systems, cages, shellfish farming, freshwater ponds, hatcheries and freshwater ornamental fish farming across an area of over 1,264 hectares,' the statement said. Pulau Pangkor also remains an important location in the national fisheries industry with its strategic advantage as a centre for high-quality anchovy production which is a benchmark for the industry.

King Charles reminds war survivors of ‘arms you link' as greatest weapons on 80th VJ Day

LONDON, Aug 15 — King Charles III Friday lauded the 'courage' of veterans and civilians who paid a high price to end World War II, leading UK commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. Charles referenced 'conflicts around the world today' in an audio message to the nation, arguing WWII remained a reminder that 'war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life'. WWII veterans 'proved that, in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear, but the arms you link'. The UK was Friday marking the occasion with a remembrance service at the National Memorial Arboretum to be attended by dozens of veterans aged from 96 to 105 who served in East Asia and the Pacific. The commemorations will begin with a national two-minute silence at noon and include flypasts by the Red Arrows and WWII-era Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft. In the message recorded earlier this month, Charles vowed the 'service and sacrifice' of those who 'saw the forces of liberty prevail' will 'never be forgotten'. 'The courage and camaraderie displayed in humanity's darkest hour is a flame that shall blaze for eternity – a beacon that honours our past and guides our future,' he said in the six-minute address. 'Let us therefore pledge to be vigilant guardians of the values they bequeathed to us.' The king also urged recognition of the devastation caused by the atomic bombings of Japan which led to its surrender eight decades ago, marking the end of the six-year-long war. 'On this landmark anniversary, we should also pause to acknowledge that in the war's final act, an immense price was paid by the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – a price we pray no nation need ever pay again,' he said. 'Same values' In Japan, Emperor Naruhito spoke Friday of his 'deep remorse' on the 80th anniversary of the nation's surrender, as tens of thousands of people braved blazing heat to pay their respects at Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni Shrine. It honours 2.5 million mostly Japanese soldiers who perished since the late 19th century, but also enshrines convicted war criminals. Back in Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will attend Friday's remembrance service, held a special reception at Downing Street for veterans on Thursday. He said he had hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, noting Ukraine's leader is 'fighting for the same values as we were fighting for'. 'Our country owes a great debt to those who fought for a better future, so we could have the freedoms and the life we enjoy today,' Starmer added. 'We must honour that sacrifice with every new generation.' — AFP

King Charles leads VJ Day 80th anniversary commemorations in UK

LONDON: King Charles will lead British commemorations on Friday for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which marks victory over Japan and the end of World War Two, with famous buildings across the country lit up to mark the occasion. While fighting in Europe ended in May 1945, the conflict with Japan continued until it signalled its intention to surrender on August 15 that year after atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. Charles will be joined by his wife Queen Camilla, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Japanese ambassador and veterans for a National Service of Remembrance to pay tribute to those who were killed in the final three months of the war. There will be a flypast featuring historic military planes and a two-minute silence at midday. 'Eighty years since our victory in the Second World War, we pay our respects to the many who fought, were captured, and made the ultimate sacrifice in the Far East,' Starmer said in a statement. 'Our country owes a great debt to those who fought for a better future, so we could have the freedoms and the life we enjoy today.' At dawn military bagpipers will perform at The Cenotaph war memorial in central London, at Edinburgh Castle and the National Memorial Arboretum in central England where the service of remembrance will be held later, the government said. A piper will also perform at a Japanese peace garden to recognise the reconciliation between Britain and Japan in the decades since the war ended. On Friday evening, dozens of buildings and locations across the country including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, and the White Cliffs of Dover will be illuminated to mark the anniversary. - Reuters
