3 must-do passport checks for your holiday as Brits waste £110m on fast-track fees

Experts are warning travellers of three must-do checks before their holiday this summer to avoid costly fast-track passport application fees.
Google searches for "express passport" have surged by a staggering 323%, revealing just how many people are scrambling to get holiday-ready at the last opportunity.
According to a recent Post Office survey 25% of Brits admit they never check the validity of their passport when booking a trip.
This oversight can lead to denied boarding, trip cancellations, or being turned away at border control, often at a significant personal cost.
To avoid stress or disappointment, last-minute holiday provider Travel Republic has revealed three key checks every traveller should make before heading on a last-minute holiday this summer.
More importantly, check it's less than 10 years before your departure date.
Those travelling to any country in the EU, or Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland should ensure their passports were issued less than 10 years before their departure dates.
For example, if you are flying on July 10 2025, your passport must have been issued after July 10 2015. This rule applies regardless of the passport's expiry date.

Your passport must also be valid for at least three months after your intended return date when travelling to Europe or the Schengen area. For example, if you return home on 1 August 2025, your passport must be valid until at least 1 November 2025.
A passport must be in good physical condition to be accepted. Even minor damage, particularly if it means personal details page unreadable, can cause issues at check-in or border control.
Gemma Brown, Head of Ground Product & Partnerships at Travel Republic, says: 'The likelihood is that travel insurance providers would not cover any costs associated with invalid or expired passports, as it's down to the traveller to triple-check their documentation is correct.
Your passport is your most important travel document - it's worth taking your time to get right! 'Our advice would be to ensure that your passport is within the 10-year issue date and is valid for at least six months from the date of departure to ensure you will be accepted into most countries.
"Regardless of passport rules, it's important for all travellers to research the country they plan to visit and ensure they know what travel documentation is required upon entering and leaving. You can find foreign travel advice on the government website to make sure you have everything covered.'

With thousands of UK travellers experiencing airport heartbreak over the last year due to non-compliant passports, checking your documents ahead of summer travel plans is essential.
If your passport doesn't meet the updated rules and outlined conditions, renewing early could be the key to a seamless getaway instead of missing out on your long-awaited trip.
Getting a deal on a last-minute holiday is all well and good, but so is making sure your passport is up-to-date. The average cost of a 1-week fast track and 1-day premium passport application is £194.25, and according to data from HM Passport Office, over half a million applications were made in 2023, which would total an £111 million spend.

Starboard Is Betting Big on Tripadvisor Stock. Should You?

Tripadvisor (TRIP) shares closed nearly 17% up on Thursday after Starboard Value announced a $160 million or 9% stake in the global travel platform, which it said was 'undervalued' at current levels. The activist investor hasn't yet disclosed its plans for the firm, but its track record of successfully restructuring consumer-facing companies is already rekindling interest in TRIP shares. Despite today's rally, Tripadvisor stock is down some 6% versus its year-to-date high in February. Starboard's stake could prove meaningfully positive for TRIP shares because the activist investor's standard playbook features pushing for operational improvements, cost discipline, and improved execution. With these initiatives, the activist firm could help Tripadvisor's flagship brand reclaim some of its lost ground in the second half of 2025 – following an 8% decline in revenue last year. Meanwhile, Starboard could accelerate monetization of the company's fast-growing units (Viator and TheFork) to boost shareholder value as well. Simply put, the activist firm's presence could lead to intense scrutiny of Tripadvisor's operations and a push for tangible actions to unlock hidden value in the underperforming travel services firm. In late June, Bernstein analysts also cited 'undervaluation' as they recommended loading up on TRIP stock at current levels. According to the investment firm, the company's recent merger with Liberty Tripadvisor Holding removed a complex dual-share setup – effectively streamlining governance and making the firm more attractive to institutional investors and potential acquirers. The 2024 transaction sparked interest from multiple parties, with some bids reportedly reaching as high as $30 per share. Bernstein reiterated its 'Buy' rating on Tripadvisor shares last week with a price objective of $20 indicating potential upside of another 15% from here. Other Wall Street firms, however, are not nearly as positive on Tripadvisor stock despite perceived undervaluation. According to Barchart, the consensus rating on TRIP shares currently sits at 'Hold' only with the mean target of about $17 indicating potential 'downside' of some 3% from current levels. 61 Million Drivers Prepare to Hit the Road This 4th of July Weekend

More than 72 million people are expected to travel the U.S. by vehicle or air this 4th of July weekend, according to a projection . AAA predicts that 61.6 million people will travel at least 50 miles by car, which is a 2.2 percent increase compared to last year. Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6, are expected to be the busiest days on the road. As the long weekend around the Independence Day holiday begins, many Americans are preparing to hit the road. predicts that 72.2 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles or more domestically this 4th of July weekend. Of those 72.2 million, 61.6 million are planning to travel by car. This is a 2.2 percent increase in travel compared to 2024. Those numbers add up to what's predicted to be the busiest 4th of July travel weekend ever. Last year during the same holiday week, AAA said it responded to around 700,000 emergency roadside assistance calls due to dead batteries, flat tires, and other problems, so the insurance agency suggests bringing an emergency kit and making sure your vehicle's maintenance is up to date. Gas prices are estimated to increase, but they are still the lowest they've been since 2021 according to the cost-saving app Gas Buddy, which says the average cost of gas in the U.S. stood at $3.14 per gallon as of June 30. AAA states that anytime after noon is not the best time to drive, as traffic will most likely be the busiest. It is recommended to travel early in the morning to avoid congested traffic. For those who are renting a car to travel with, Hertz expects that Thursday, July 3, will turn out to be the busiest pickup day. The most car rental pickups will be Orlando, Denver, Boston, Oahu, and Seattle, the rental company says. If you think you can avoid busy travel by flying, you might be in for a disappointment. It is also predicted that air travel will set a new record high this year. It is estimated that around 5.8 million people will fly to their destination. This is a 1.4 percent increase over the previous record set during last year's Independence Day holiday week. Where are all these people going? AAA says the top draws are beaches, cruises, and fireworks, with the top domestic destinations for the holiday being Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Anchorage, Alaska, and Honolulu, Hawaii; and New York, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, and Denver.
