Calgary Wild FC struggles 'to get a foothold' at home, gets blanked by Ottawa Rapid FC

Yahooa day ago
Ottawa Rapid FC scored early and never looked back, blanking Calgary Wild FC 3-0 in front of their home crowd at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Ottawa's trio of tallies in the Northern Super League match came from two set pieces and one that ricocheted off Wild FC goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec.
'I think that while the set pieces dictated the score of the game, they didn't dictate the game,' said Wild FC head coach Lydia Bedford. 'We are obviously really upset to concede two set pieces, but our play didn't create that much, and they did dictate the tempo of the game.'
Florence Belzille got the visitors on the board first, scoring her first goal in her first match at the 12-minute mark. Forward Delaney Bale Pridham doubled things up before halftime when she became the first NSL player to reach the 10-goal mark.
'We really struggled to get a foothold. I think the players kept fighting which is important. They tried to solve problems at the half, but just were less successful, and too far off it on the whole today.'
Ottawa put the game away with an own-goal three minutes into the second half.
Wild FC's record drops to 4-6-2 at the midway point of the 25-game inaugural season.

Tyne Valley soapbox derby brings community together for a weekend of fun

Nine-year-old Luke Bridges won a division at the Tyne Valley soapbox derby on Saturday. But winning and losing wasn't all that important to him. Bridges has been taking part of the soapbox derby for nearly half his life, this year being his fourth year racing. "I get to bring home the gold," he said. "But it doesn't matter if you win or lose, just have a good time." The soapbox derby has been going on in Tyne Valley for 12 years. Pam MacKinnon, a volunteer at the derby, says the event raises money for various things in the community, including the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival. "It's 100 per cent volunteer," MacKinnon said. "It's pretty awesome that everybody can just show up and offer a hand and see all the excitement from the kids." The derby is set up in four divisions, A through D. Bridges won the D event. A fifth category, All-American Cars, sends the champion to Ohio next year for the world championship. Community impact MacKinnon said this event is good for the entire community. "It's just an awesome way to get together," MacKinnon said. "It requires a huge amount of volunteers, but being from Tyne Valley and part of a lot of volunteering here, we have a phenomenal base of volunteers in this community." There were roughly 55 participants ages seven to 20. No experience was required. For the division using the big cars, there are prizes for the top drivers.

Cricket is growing in popularity in Waterloo region, especially among women

Cricket has been growing throughout Canada in recent years, and in Waterloo region, this growth is quite tangible – especially among women and children. "You can take Indians out of India, but not cricket out [of] them," said Priyadharshini Anandhan, captain of the Tamil Cultural Association's women's cricket club. "Wherever you see a group [from the] Indian community, you can see cricket there." Anandhan, who loves the sport for instilling discipline in her, is one of many female cricket players in Waterloo region who is seeing the sport's growth as a win. Cricket's growth Cricket in general has been growing over the years. In Toronto for example, cricket has grown so much that in 2024, the city's executive committee had to push forward plans to develop a formal cricket strategy. In Calgary, the demand for cricket fields has grown so much that cricket groups started setting caps on registration to ensure as many players as possible get field time. Khrisna Bhure, captain of the Golden Triangle Marathi Mandal's men's cricket team in Waterloo region, said he's excited to see the growth of the sport he grew up playing. "Coming to men's cricket [around 2017-2018], I would say there were about 15 to 20 season ball clubs," he said. "Now I see more than 70 to 80 full-time teams." Rajanikanth Ruthiran, captain of the Tamil Cultural Association men's cricket club, said he's watched cricket in Canada grow significantly since moving to the country in his 20s. Now in his 40s, it still excites him to see more people showing interest in the sport. Ruthiran said cricket has become like a "religion" in a lot of South Asian countries. "It's not only in India," he said. "Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh – anywhere in the South Asian countries, cricket [has become] a very dominant sport." More women, children picking up the bat Bhure sees all this growth as good news, but it's the recent boost in popularity for women and children that excites him even more. Anandhan said she's seeing so many women – even those without previous sports experience – picking up the bat. "I have two players on my team who are new moms," she said. "They never played any sport, but they wanted to play, so we told them to come and practice and we are practicing. We are participating in two tournaments right now and they play extremely well." Krishna also noted how cricket is attracting younger players. He said his 11-year-old daughter has started playing cricket after watching her mom play, and Bhure describes it as being part of their culture. "It's a transition in culture," he said. Pallavi Bhure, Krishna's wife and the captain of Team Marathi's women's cricket team, shares her husband's insight on the growing interest among younger people. "We come with that cricket culture, and we want to make it, you know, take it forward to our next generation." The Golden Triangle Marathi Mandal and the Tamil Cultural Association's cricket clubs are among the many sports teams who will be playing at the South Asian Family Sports day later this month. "We wait for it every year," said Khrisna, "Eight communities come together with their families and kids, and it's like a mini South Asia on the Waterloo [Park] grounds." The event will take place on July 26 and 27 at Waterloo Park. Attendees will also have the chance to play other sports including volleyball, soccer and throwball. There will be activities for kids, as well as yoga and zumba.

Kitchener Rangers Announce Roster Changes For The 2025-26 Season, Two NHL Prospects Set To Return

The Kitchener Rangers announced updates to their roster regarding five of their players for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Forwards Jack Pridham and Christian Humphreys and defenseman Jakub Chromiak will return to the red, blue, and white lineup next season. Pridham and Chromiak return as overage players. In an adjacent move, the club has released overage forwards Cameron Mercer and Chris Grisolia. Pridham, 19, and Humphreys, 19, are set to attend the training camps for their respective NHL teams this fall. Pridham will join the Chicago Blackhawks, while Humphreys will be with the Colorado Avalanche. It would be surprising if either player made the opening lineup, but Pridham has the best chance, as the Blackhawks have a young and rebuilding roster. Kitchener was able to recruit Pridham over from West Kelowna of the BCHL in November during the 2024-25 season. The son of Toronto Maple Leafs Assistant GM, Brandon Pridham, decommitted from Boston University at the beginning of July. Chicago Blackhawks Prospect & Boston University Commit Headed For Kitchener The OHL's first-place Kitchener Rangers are about to get even stronger up front at forward However, after coming over and becoming a top-six impactful forward for the Rangers — he scored 54 points (27 goals, 27 assists) in 48 regular season games and 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists) in 16 playoff games — his decision to return will allow him to continue playing top-line minutes. Humphreys signed with Kitchener in early January last season after playing ten games in the NCAA for the University of Michigan, recording just one assist. The Avalanche's seventh-round draft pick in 2024 chose to decommit from his NCAA scholarship to gain more opportunities for meaningful playing minutes and enhance his development. For Kitchener last season, the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native recorded 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 28 regular season games. In the playoffs, he put up 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in 13 games. Right-shot defender Chromiak was acquired by the club from the Kingston Frontenacs back in October at the start of the season. The Ilava, Slovakia native recorded 32 points (4 goals, 28 assists) in 54 regular season games and 8 points (1 goal, 7 assists) in 16 playoff games for Kitchener during the 2024-25 season. Kingston Frontenacs Sign NCAA-Bound Goaltender & Talented American Forward In the past week, the Kingston Frontenacs made several signings, including a potential starting goaltender and a promising 2009-born American forward drafted in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. Chromiak will occupy both an overage and import player spot for the Rangers for the 2025-26 season. Kitchener has one overage spot, leaving the door open for captain Matthew Andonovski to return if he doesn't play in the AHL or ECHL. 'All three of these guys were such a big part of our team last year, and the possibility of all three returning is a huge boost to our team for this upcoming season. All three players had options to play in other leagues, but we are thrilled they have chosen to stay in Kitchener for another season and be key veteran members of our team,' said Kitchener Rangers GM Mike McKenzie. Cameron Mercer, 20, leaves the organization after playing four seasons with them, recording 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists) in 243 games. He was drafted in the third round (51st overall) in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection and has developed into a reliable bottom-six center at the OHL level. 'We would like to thank Cam for the last four years and his dedication to our program. He was such a popular player around the room and someone that was a pleasure to be around and coach. We will miss Cam but wish him the best of luck in his next chapter,' said McKenzie. The Barrie, Ontario native would be a prime candidate to sign with his hometown Barrie Colts. The Colts swapped overage players with the Niagara IceDogs, sending defenseman Grayson Tiller to his hometown, and acquired forward Alexander Assadourian in return. And overage forward Michael Derbidge is expected to return to the Caledonia Corvairs of the GOJHL. If Brad Gardiner, a former Dallas Stars prospect, returns, this leaves Barrie with one open overage spot. IceDogs And Colts Swap Overage Players In Offseason Trade Earlier today, IceDogs' GM Frank Evola completed his first trade by sending Alex Assadourian and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Barrie Colts in exchange for overage defender Grayson Tiller. Former Barrie Colts forward Chris Grisolia leaves the Rangers organization after just one season with the club, recording 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) in 55 games. The Vaughan, Ontario native brings a veteran presence of 232 OHL games. He is a former second-round draft pick (24th overall) by Barrie in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. 'Chris was only here for one season, but left a positive mark on our organization with his work ethic and popularity in the dressing room. We wish Chris the best in the next stop on his hockey journey,' said McKenzie.
