STARKE: A man who fatally shot a man and woman outside a Florida bar as part of an attempted revenge killing is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday.
Michael Bernard Bell, 54, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, barring a last-day reprieve.
He was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to death for the murders of Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith.
Bell would be the eighth person put to death in Florida this year, with a ninth scheduled for later this month. The state executed six people in 2023, but carried out only one execution last year.
Twenty-five men have already been executed in the US this year, tying last year's total.
Florida has executed more people than any other state this year, while Texas and South Carolina are tied for second place with four each.
Alabama has executed three people, Oklahoma has killed two, and Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee each have killed one.
In December 1993, Bell spotted what he thought was the car of the man who fatally shot his brother earlier that year, according to court records. Bell was apparently unaware that the man had sold the car to West.
Bell called on two friends and armed himself with an AK-47 rifle, authorities said.

They found the car parked outside a liquor lounge and waited. When West, Smith and another woman eventually exited the club, Bell approached the car and opened fire, officials said.
West died at the scene, and Smith died on the way to the hospital. The other woman escaped injury. Witnesses said Bell also fired at a crowd of onlookers before fleeing the area. He was eventually arrested the next year.
Bell was later convicted of three additional murders.
He fatally shot a woman and her toddler son in 1989, and he killed his mother's boyfriend about four months before the attack on West and Smith, officials said.
Attorneys for Bell have filed appeals with the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court.
The lawyers argued in their state filing that Bell's execution should be halted because of newly discovered evidence about witness testimony. But justices unanimously rejected the argument last week and pointed to overwhelming evidence of Bell's guilt in a 54-page opinion.
Bell's attorneys filed a similar petition with the US supreme court on Thursday, but the panel has not yet issued a ruling.

The Manipur Police, in coordination with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Army, and Assam Rifles, recovered 86 weapons and several rounds of ammunition in a series of coordinated search operations on Tuesday. The recovery was made during search operations conducted across multiple valley districts based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the peripheral and vulnerable areas of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts. The seizure included five AK series rifles, three INSAS rifles, 16 self-loading rifles (SLRs), five .303 rifles, 19 pistols, two carbines, nine other rifles, 16 SBBL and bore action guns, two antiriot guns, one JVPC, one double-barrel gun, six bolt-action guns, and a two-inch mortar. In addition to the firearms, the teams also recovered nine grenades, six high-explosive mortar shells, four improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and 41 assorted magazines. Ammunition seized included 526 live rounds of 7.62 mm, 226 rounds of 5.56 mm, 190 rounds of .303 mm, seven rounds of 9 mm, and four rounds of .32 mm. The forces also confiscated six wireless handsets and two tube launchers. Miscreants looted over 6,000 weapons from state forces' armouries since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023. The Manipur Police, in a press statement, described the operation as a major success in the ongoing effort to neutralise illegal arms networks and restore peace and security in the state. The operation underscores the close coordination among security agencies and the proactive approach being taken to prevent further violence. Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such focused and intelligence-driven operations, it said. This is the third significant weapon recovery in recent times. On July 4, the forces seized 203 weapons and explosives during joint search operations in the hill districts of Manipur. Before that, in another operation, 328 weapons and 8,665 assorted ammunition were recovered.

Teacher booked for telling students to ‘light lampof knowledge instead of going on kanwar yatra'
Bareilly: A govt school teacher in UP's Bareilly was slapped with a case on Tuesday for "promoting enmity" after he was seen in a video purportedly reciting an "objectionable poem referring to kanwar yatra" in front of students during their assembly prayer. In the clip, he could be heard saying, "Light the lamp of knowledge instead of going on kanwar yatra". Police said an FIR was registered against teacher Rajneesh Gangwar under BNS section 353-2 (public mischief with intent to promote enmity, hatred or ill-will between different groups) following a complaint by a local right-wing activist Shakti Gupta. In the police complaint, Gupta accused Gangwar of "hurting religious sentiments by reciting an objectionable verse from a poem to students at Bareilly's MGM Inter College". Baheri circle officer Arun Kumar said, "The teacher has not been arrested yet as the section imposed against him has a punishment of three years in jail. Police, as per the norms, can't arrest anyone accused of an offence that provides for seven or fewer years of imprisonment. Investigation is on and further action will be taken accordingly." In the 26-second clip, part of a five-minute video, the teacher -- after making a purported remark on the yatra -- could be heard urging the students to "serve humanity and become true humans..." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dukung Orang Terkasih Menghadapi Limfoma: Mulai Di Sini Limfoma Pelajari Undo The video was widely circulated online, with many calling it "disrespectful towards a religious tradition". "During a school activity, I read a poem to students. There was nothing wrong with it. For some time now, there has been a conspiracy against me within the school. About a year-and-a-half ago, there was an attempt to file an FIR against me, accusing me of assaulting students. When nothing was found then, a 26-second clip was improperly edited now to create a false narrative against me," the accused teacher told TOI on Tuesday. Meanwhile, school principal Ashok Kumar Gangwar said the teacher read the poem on Saturday, and a "clarification has been sought from him". The ongoing kanwar yatra is scheduled to conclude on July 23.
