Alabama defensive duo named to preseason watch list for 2025 Bednarik Award

USA Today13 hours ago
Announced on Monday, a pair of Alabama Crimson Tide football players have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the top defensive player in college football.
Those two players are defensive tackle Tim Keenan III and inside linebacker Deontae Lawson, both of which return as starters for the Crimson Tide in 2025.
Keenan, a redshirt senior, is a multi-year starter at defensive tackle for the Crimson Tide who should be among the top players at the position in the SEC this fall. The defensive tackle is coming off a year in which he had 40 tackles, eight TFL, and 2.5 sacks, and was also recently named to the Nagurski preseason watch list, alongside Lawson.
Lawson, also a redshirt senior, returns as a starter at inside linebacker, and is coming off an injury shortened 2024 season where he served as one of Alabama's team captains. Expected to be among college football's top inside linebackers this fall, Lawson ended last season with 76 tackles, seven TFL, two sacks, and an interception.
Alabama has seen three players win the Bednarik Award previously, which were Jonathan Allen (2016), Minkah Fitzpatrick (2017), and Will Anderson Jr. (2022).

More preseason honors rolled in for four Clemson football starters Tuesday. Defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods were named to the preseason Lombardi Award watch list, as were linebacker Sammy Brown and offensive tackle Blake Miller. The Lombardi Award annually recognizes the nation's best down lineman on either offense or defense "who best embodies the character, discipline, and excellence of NFL Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi, while also demonstrating outstanding performance and ability on the field." Clemson tied the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas Longhorns for programs with the most players named to the 2025 Lombardi watch list. It's the latest in a string of preseason accolades for the four Tigers. Woods was named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list, as was senior quarterback Cade Klubnik. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive tackle was also named to the preseason watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award and Outland Trophy. Woods enters his junior season after playing in 11 games (10 starts) a year ago. He had 28 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble as a sophomore. In two seasons at Clemson, Woods has recorded 54 tackles (31 solo), 11 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles over 23 games. Parker, the Tigers' 6-foot-3, 265-pound edge rusher, started all 14 games last season and has played in all 27 games since his freshman season in 2023. He had 57 tackles (35 solo) and had 11 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles to go with two fumble recoveries in 2024. Parker was also named to the Nagurski Trophy and and Bednarik Award watch lists. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker, is coming off a true freshman season in which he played in 12 games (six starts) and made 80 tackles with 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He was previously named to the preseason Butkus Award watch list along with senior Wade Woodaz. Miller is set to enter his fourth season as an anchor of the offensive line and was previously named to the Outland Trophy watch list. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound lineman has started all 41 games for the Tigers at right tackle since his freshman season in 2022. Watch Jonathan Smith provide a MSU update following team's first fall scrimmage

Michigan State football is halfway through fall preseason camp, with the team holding their first scrimmage this past weekend. That scrimmage provided head coach Jonathan Smith, with some interesting insight on the team -- which he shared on Monday. Smith met with the local media on Monday to talk about the first few weeks of fall preseason camp as the Spartans enter week three of practice. This was also the first time for media availability following the Spartans' first preseason scrimmage, which was a hot topic during Smith's press conference. Check out what Smith had to say about the team's first scrimmage and how practice has gone the first two weeks of fall camp in the highlights and full video sections below: Highlights Some of the notable topics covered during Smith's media session on Monday were... Jonathan Smith provides interesting update on MSU O-Line depth

Depth within the offensive line was a concern last season for the Spartans, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Michigan State is in the midst of fall preseason camp, with the Spartans kicking off week three of practice earlier on Monday. As part of progressing into week three, Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith met with the media on Monday to discuss a number of topics surrounding his team. One of those was the depth he's seeing at offensive line. According to a post from Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows, Smith said there's a battle for the starting five spots on the offensive line, with "close to 10 guys" still in the mix. This quote is particularly interesting because, to me, this suggests they feel pretty good about essentially their entire two deep at offensive line. Michigan State's offensive line has been a weakness for the Spartans for what feels like a decade at this point. Sure, there have been bright spots along the way, but it hasn't been a unit that has given the fan base much faith over at least the last few seasons at a minimum. If Michigan State can put together an average Big Ten offensive line, I feel very confident in what they can achieve this season on that side of the ball. The skilled position groups all seem to be upper-tier in the league, with the offensive line being the biggest question mark. However, it's starting to sound like we should be putting more faith and expectations into that unit as we inch closer and close to the start of the 2025 season.
