Gerambeat PS retain tug-of-war men's title
KOTA KINABALU (May 26): Gerambeat PS reigned supreme by retaining the 'Migazat Dukug' (tug-of-war) title in the recently concluded traditional sports competition held in conjunction with the state-level Kaamatan Festival.
The defending champions beat off the challenge of Reborn Blue Tiger to emerge as champions of the Men's Open (combined weight 680kg) event at the SMK Bahang, Penampang. Tagon Tambunan and Gerambeat Jr Garagas settled for joint third placing.
In the Women's Open (combined weight 560kg), KB Town 'pullers' bested Gerambeat Ladies in the final to prevent a clean sweep from the latter. Kota Marudu's Dinamik Women Puller Team and Kokup Tawau Ladies finished joint third.
Among other highlight in the two-day event was the 'Mipulos' (arm-wrestling) contest, which saw familiar faces such as two-time world gold medalist Joffey Jolly, Jolly Johnson and Joyce Heng Shu Xia among the winners.
Competing in the Men's Champion of Champions event, Joffey representing Papar defeated Raymond Wong of KDCA Kapayan to the title while Dollie Joe and Jazzien Boezalek shared the third placing.
Defending champion Jolly of Telipok remained unbeaten in the Men's Veteran event after he edged Oliver Joseph of Penampang in the final. The join third placing went to Esmond Ampilah (KDCA Kapayan) and Earl Dominic Gregory.
As for Joyce, she faced little problem as she claimed the Women's above 70kg category title beating fellow Penampang puller Nezira Petrus Lojuyo. Frecy Pettues of Kudat and Eristica Estie Bidi of Ranau finished joint third.
Five other divisions including newly-included under-18 event that attracted 40 entries were also contested in arm-wrestling, which was one of the nine traditional sports featured in the two-day programme.
Tug-of-war and arm-wrestling apart, the others were momolositik (slingshot), monopuk (blowpipes), manandus (spearing), Mobpiri (lighting fire), Monungkava Kalabau (roping buffalo), Rampanau (walk with poles) and Sipatu Tompulalangoi (giant slippers).
In all, around 2,000 people either attended or contested in the traditional sports programme, which was officiated by Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Fairuz Renddan on Saturday.
Sabah Sports Board (SSB) chairman Masly Wahip officiated at the prize presentation and closing of the programme yesterday.

The 21-year-old former Florida State University student marked her entry into the paid ranks by cruising to a three-stroke victory at last week's Scottish Open. She also won the Irish Open by six strokes as an amateur in July before just missing out on becoming the first amateur to win a major when she was beaten by one stroke by Australia's Grace Kim at the Evian Championship. So it is hardly surprising that Surrey-born Woad, who turned professional after the Evian Championship, has found herself in the spotlight as she arrived in South Wales. Asked about the growing expectation, Woad said it was all part of the learning process. "I don't think you can ever really fully handle it. I definitely feel like I've got a lot better at it," she told reporters. "I just try and block out the noise as much as possible really." Woad finished tied 10th at the Women's Open last year at St Andrews, but said Porthcawl presents a tough challenge. "I think it will be a really good test. We'll see; weather is always a factor in links golf. A lot more to mind off the tee than St Andrews last year. Definitely got to keep in play," she said. "A lot of holes, par is a good score, and then you've got to take a chance on the par-5s really." Amongst a high-quality field standing in Woad's way is defending champion Lydia Ko from New Zealand. "She's kind of come out with a bang, and I'm sure she's going to keep continuing to play well," Ko said of Woad. "I don't know a lot about her game personally, but the little that I've seen, she seems super impressive and has that kind of cool, calm, collected demeanour, and that's, I think, pretty important as a player." Olympic champion Ko is playing in Wales for the first time and said she is ready for the elements. "I would rather it be tough than be calm. As much as I love sunny weather, when I'm coming to play the Women's Open, I expect it to be rainy, windy, and that's what I've gotten to really enjoy about this Championship," she said. "I hope it brings all those elements." World number one Nelly Korda is bidding to win her first British Open after coming tied second last year. She is also expecting big things from former amateur world number one Woad. "Golf is a game of confidence, and she's definitely high up there right now, so she's going to be trusting everything," Korda said. Twin brothers conquer 21km categories at the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2025

Hazarullah, 27, from Saratok, clinched first place in both the 21km Men's Open and 21km Men's National categories while Syahrullah finished second in the same categories at the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2025 held here yesterday. When met by The Borneo Post after the prize presentation ceremony at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound, the Malay-Melanau lad shared how his brother had first inspired him to lace up his running shoes. 'My motivation is actually my twin brother, Syahrullah. He started running earlier than me. My original sport was football, but when I saw him running in 2017 and consistently finishing on the podium, I felt like I wanted to follow in his footsteps,' said Hazarullah. He eventually made the switch in 2019 while pursuing his degree at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam. 'I started running seriously when I was 21, during my degree days at UiTM Shah Alam. Since then, football has taken a back seat. I don't play anymore. I just run,' he said. This week alone, Hazarullah secured two championship titles—at the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run and earlier at the Sarawak Day Run in Bintangor. 'I'm happy, of course, because last year in this same event, I finished third. The top two were runners from Kenya. But this year, I managed to win both the Men's Open and Men's National categories. 'Earlier this week, on Tuesday, I also became champion at the Sarawak Day Run in Bintangor. So, two wins this week,' he added. Currently undergoing his practicum at Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Babai in Julau, Hazarullah said he joins running events almost every week. 'Almost every week there's an event that I join. Next week, I'll be in Bintulu. After that, back to Kuching, then again in Kuching,' he said. He estimated that the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run was his ninth or tenth event of the year so far. Among his proudest achievements to date was placing 9th in the Malaysian category at the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon last year. 'That's one of the biggest events in Malaysia, and I was really proud to be in the top 10 for the 42km category,' he said. 'Running helps steer you away from negative influences, like social ills. It's a healthy activity, and everyone can participate. If you train more and have the talent, you can go far. A total of 3,200 participants took part in the second edition of the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2025, comprising runners from Malaysia and 21 other countries. Jalur Gemilang Inverted: FAM Sends Official Protest To AFF, AFC
SHAH ALAM, July 26 (Bernama) -- The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has sent an official protest following the actions of Indonesian football fans who waved the Jalur Gemilang upside down during the ASEAN Under-23 Cup in Jakarta on Tuesday. FAM secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said the protest was sent two days ago to Asian Football Federation (AFF) secretary-general Winston Lee and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). "We have sent a protest to the AFF and a cc (copy) to the AFC.
