Louisiana sheriff appointed to juvenile justice, delinquency prevention council
BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – House Speaker Mike Johnson's office announced that a north Louisiana chief law enforcement officer will join a national council to prevent juvenile delinquency.
Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington was appointed to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention on Monday. The independent organization within the executive branch focuses on how communities can better serve at-risk children and youth.
'I am honored to appoint my good friend, Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. For the last 14 years, Sheriff Whittington has done exceptional work to make Bossier Parish a safe and thriving community for families,' Speaker Johnson said. 'His leadership in law enforcement has earned national recognition, and I have no doubt he will bring invaluable expertise to the Council. I am confident Sheriff Whittington will represent Bossier Parish and the State of Louisiana with distinction.'
The council was established in 1974 by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act to assist with cross-agency coordination of juvenile delinquency programs across federal, state, and local agencies. The Attorney General of the United States is the Chair of the Council, and ten juvenile justice practitioners nationally are appointed, three of whom are appointed by the Speaker of the House.
Sheriff Whittington is a lifelong member of law enforcement and was elected Sheriff of Bossier Parish in 2011.

Florida lawmakers have agreed to provide $394,000 in state funding for a memorial honoring the victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre. The city of Orlando is planning a $12 million remembrance with a reflection pool, visitor pavilion, tribute wall and healing garden at the site of the former LGBTQ club. The rampage at the club killed 49 people, wounded 53 others and at the time was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Thursday marks the ninth anniversary of the shooting. Efforts to build a memorial began as a private campaign, which collapsed amid infighting. Now, government agencies have assumed responsibility for the undertaking with the goal of beginning construction in the summer of 2026. Pulse memorial gets $5 million pledge from Orange County Legislative budget leaders agreed Tuesday to commit state dollars to the project. The money was initially given to the onePULSE Foundation, the private group behind the memorial. The foundation agreed to repay the funds after it went defunct, according to the Florida Department of State. 'Ever since that happened, we have been working to bring these funds back for a memorial in Orlando,' said state Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando. Earlier this month, Orange County pledged $5 million to support the project in addition to the $7.5 million budgeted by Orlando. City officials were pleased that the state also wants to contribute, Orlando spokeswoman Ashley Papagni said Wednesday in a prepared statement. 'We are thankful to the appropriation sponsors and House and Senate leadership for their support of the victims, survivors, families, and first responders impacted by the Pulse tragedy,' she said.

Rep. Luna: China is dangerous, behind funding of protests
(NewsNation) — Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican, announced the House Oversight committee will be calling China-based billionaire Neville Singham to testify regarding the funding of a group that organized protests in Los Angeles. 'If he refuses to appear, he will be subpoenaed, and if he ignores that, he will be referred to the DOJ for prosecution,' Luna said in a post on social platform X. She alleged that the Party for Socialism and Liberation, a Communist political party to which Singham has previously donated, is also receiving funding from the Chinese Communist Party. The committee will be looking into links between Singham and the CCP, as well. Luna joined NewsNation's 'CUOMO' on Wednesday to discuss the investigation. She said she believes Singham and the CCP are purposely trying to create division within the United States. She added that she believes they are creating a ruse with the protests and making Hispanic-Americans think the unrest going on is all about the recent ICE raids. Lindsey Graham asked then-U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Singham over Foreign Agents Registration Act violations and ties to China, but the administration did not follow up. 'It's not just me, but the entire Oversight committee in Congress,' Luna said. 'This is a different administration. We are not playing games.
