DC Jim Knowles says move to Penn State happened because Ohio State didn't offer extension

Fox Sports07-05-2025

The college football coaching carousel took an unusual turn this offseason when Jim Knowles departed defending champion Ohio State for Penn State in a lateral move to become the Nittany Lions' coordinator.
Knowles knows that his move was out of the ordinary as well. However, in a recent interview with ESPN, the new Penn State coordinator explained that his decision to leave Ohio State was born out of the program's lack of a desire to get an extension with him done before its national championship game win.
"I did not want to put anyone, including myself, in a position to have to deal with it immediately following the national championship game," Knowles told ESPN. "And that's the way it happened."
Knowles admitted that he "would not have explored or considered other options" had Ohio State offered him an extension prior to its title victory over Notre Dame, but things became "awkward" in the aftermath of the win as he still didn't have a deal in place.
"Season's over, everything coming to a head again quickly," Knowles said. "Ohio State hasn't come forward with a deal, and it's like, OK, if I'm going to act on this or at least explore it, I have got to make the call."
Knowles called Penn State head coach James Franklin about the program's defensive coordinator vacancy early in the morning two days after Ohio State's championship win, according to ESPN. Not long after, Penn State and Knowles agreed to a deal that would make him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the nation with a $3.1 million salary. The deal also reportedly includes bonus money that could eclipse $1 million if the Nittany Lions win a national championship.
While the 65-year-old Knowles is a Pennsylvania native, the move was still widely considered to be a surprise in January. Knowles had helped Ohio State's defense rank first in the nation in yards (254.6 per game) and points allowed (12.9 per game) in 2024. The Buckeyes were also top-three in both categories in 2023 as Knowles oversaw a unit that continued to get better after he was hired in 2022.
Now, Knowles, who has had previous stops with Oklahoma State and Duke as their defensive coordinator, will oversee a Penn State defense that might be just as good as the Ohio State unit he coached in 2024. Even though star linebacker Abdul Carter is no longer in Happy Valley, the Nittany Lions' defense is full of standouts. Dani Dennis-Sutton could replicate Carter's production along the edge after he had 8.5 sacks in 2024. Defensive tackle Zane Durant, third-team All-Big Ten cornerback A.J. Harris and Zakee Wheatley (96 total tackles in 2024) all return from Penn State's seventh-ranked defense last season.
That returning talent, along with the hiring of Knowles, led FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt to rank Penn State as his No. 1 team in the nation following spring practices. But Klatt is also high on Ohio State, too. He ranked the Buckeyes third after they replaced Knowles with Matt Patricia at defensive coordinator.
Penn State and Ohio State will meet in Columbus on Nov. 1, where the Nittany Lions will look to end the Buckeyes' eight-game winning streak against them.

Iowa football QB Mark Gronowski leads the pack of best Big Ten returning quarterbacks

Iowa football QB Mark Gronowski leads the pack of best Big Ten returning quarterbacks As the summer months continue to slowly creep by as the 2025 college football season kickoff looms, there is a growing sense of expectations and excitement surrounding the Iowa Hawkeyes and the noise they could potentially make this fall. The reason for the anticipation rests on the shoulders of their new quarterback, South Dakota State Jackrabbits transfer Mark Gronowski. Expected to be one of the most impactful transfers in the Big Ten, the Hawkeyes and their faithful are hoping that he can continue the dominance that he showed at the FCS level while winning two national championships. Mark Gronowski's arm talent and running ability are undeniable, and that combination of skill sets has him ranked as the top returning quarterback in the Big Ten entering 2025, per Pro Football Focus. While at South Dakota State, Mark Gronowski threw for 10,330 yards and 93 touchdowns while adding 1,767 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns on the ground to prove that defenses have to game plan for him in a multitude of ways. Other Big Ten quarterbacks returning in 2025 that could lead their teams to a successful year, or even a College Football Playoff run, include Penn State's Drew Allar, UCLA's new QB Nico Iamaleava, Indiana's new QB Fernando Mendoza, and Luke Altmyer, the signal caller of the Illinois Fighting Illini. Lions trade proposal for Bengals' Trey Hendrickson picked as winning bid by ESPN

Trey Hendrickson traded to the Detroit Lions. Wouldn't that be nice? Lions fans, players, coaches, media would all love to see it. Maybe even Lions general manager Brad Holmes, too. And there's a deal out there. Both sides just need to look to us writers for a fair trade. Advertisement At least, that's what concluded after four writers proposed four trades between the Cincinnati Bengals for four different teams. The best offer? That's right, it was the Lions with the winning bid for the NFL's reigning sack leader. (He has 17½ sacks each of the past two seasons.) Trey Hendrickson trade to Lions proposal Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson stands on the sidelines during the first half against the Baltimore Ravens at Paycor Stadium, Oct. 6, 2024 in Cincinnati. The offer came from ESPN writer Ben Solak, who proposed an exchange of three draft picks and Hendrickson, 30. Lions get: Hendrickson, 2026 fifth-round pick. Bengals get: 2026 second-round pick, 2027 fourth-round pick (can become third-rounder with performance conditions). Solak writes the Lions should behave like a legitimate Super Bowl contender, which they are, and make an aggressive trade for a proven player. He notes they have "plenty of cap space to extend Hendrickson," who has one year remaining on his deal and wants a new deal, which is the impetus for his trade demand. The Lions have the third-most cap space remaining for 2025. Advertisement Ben Baby, ESPN's Bengals reporter, chose the Lions' offer over ones pitched for the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders, and believes it's a realistic offer that could get a deal done. "By acquiring picks in 2026 and 2027, the value of the trade would be prolonged for the Bengals over the course of those players' respective rookie deals," Baby writes, mentioning that sending him to the NFC instead of a rival AFC contender like the Bills is a bonus. MY THEORY: Lions will trade for an edge rusher at some point this offseason Trey Hendrickson with Aidan Hutchinson would be scary Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson practices during OTAs at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Friday, May 30, 2025. The Lions do not have a feared pass rusher outside of Hutchinson, who is coming off a gruesome leg injury last October that required emergency surgery. He missed the Lions' final 13 games including their playoff loss. Advertisement The Lions also have top defensive tackle Alim McNeill coming off a torn ACL in December, likely setting him up to miss the start to the 2025 season. Hendrickson, named an All-Pro last season, would give the Lions perhaps the most dangerous pairing of edge rushers in the NFL. Even though he's not the run stopper the Lions have prioritized under Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, Hendrickson's track record hunting the quarterback is top tier. He also played his first four seasons in New Orleans while Campbell was a Saints assistant, so the familiarity is there. We know Lions fans would love it: When asked in early March which big move they'd most like to see the Lions make this offseason, 42% of 3,111 responses said a Hendrickson trade. That was more than double the next most popular move. Why does Trey Hendrickson want to be traded? Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson reacts following penalty flags being thrown during the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field, Oct. 20, 2024 in Cleveland. Hendrickson wants a new contract with his current one set to expire after the 2025 season. Pro Bowl-caliber players do not like to risk playing on an expiring contract due to the high rate of injury, especially one like Hendrickson who turns 31 in December. In 2023, he signed a one-year extension with an $8 million signing bonus. Advertisement He requested a trade in the 2024 offseason while seeking a long-term deal, but the Bengals declined. He eventually played out the season, and now says the Bengals are not holding up their end of the bargain, so trust has been lost. Cincinnati, which sees itself as a Super Bowl contender, agreed to let him and his representatives seek out a trade, but clearly the compensation in return has not met the Bengals' asking price. They won't be getting a first-round pick for him, that is clear.
