Madurai: Two anti-social elements ransacked the V Chatrapatti police station under Madurai rural district police limits in the early hours of Saturday after picking up an argument with a head constable.
While police are on the lookout for the suspects, Thirumangalam MLA and deputy leader of opposition R B Udhayakumar was not allowed to enter the station when he arrived later.
According to the police, around 1am, head constable Palpandi was on duty when two people not known to him suddenly trespassed into the police station and got into an argument with him. The duo then damaged the computer and desk inside the station before fleeing.
As word got out, many people raised concerns over security and safety in the area with AIADMK MLA R B Udhayakumar arriving to submit a petition. Though he and party cadres tried to enter the station they were stopped by police, saying investigation was going on. "As a people's representative of this constituency, all I wanted was to inspect the police station where the attack by anti-social elements happened. People's well-being always comes first.
But I'm being stopped unjustly," said Udhayakumar. Saying that even a police station was not safe, he held a dharna near the station. Police detained him and other AIADMK cadres at a marriage hall.
Madurai district superintendent of police B K Arvind said investigation revealed that the ones who ransacked V Chatrapatti police station are M Prabhakaran alias Porali Prabhakaran and his friend. "Prabhakaran seems to have done these actions personally. He was angry as he believed his father Muthuvel was wrongly being detained and investigated by Dindigul police in a case," he added. Four special teams have been formed to trace and arrest the two accused.

DNA tests identify 80 Air India plane crash victims, 33 bodies handed to kin
After the tragic crash of the Air India flight AI171 in Ahmedabad on June 12, hospital authorities have identified 80 victims, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, out of the more than 270 people who died in the incident. There was only one survivor from the flight. The Gujarat government has announced a state mourning for former CM Rupani on Monday. His funeral procession will be held in Rajkot in the evening. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The Gujarat state relief commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey told PTI that families of all 230 passengers who died on the flight had been contacted. "Members of only three deceased passengers are yet to give their DNA samples as they live abroad. They are expected to arrive tomorrow evening. Along with the mortal remains, we are also handing over death certificates to the kin so that they don't face any issues afterwards," said Pandey. a

Filmmaker missing since Air India plane crash; kin fear he may be ground victim
The family of a filmmaker have submitted DNA samples after he went missing on Thursday and his mobile phone location was last traced to just 700 metres away from the horrific Air India plane crash. The aircraft crashed into the campus of a medical college in Meghaninagar moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39pm on Thursday, killing 241 out of 242 on board as well as 29 on the ground. "My husband called me at 1.14pm to tell me his meeting is over and that he is on his way home. However, when he did not return, I called up on his phone but it was switched off. After police was intimated, the last location of his mobile phone showed he was 700 metres away from the crash site," she said. His scooter and mobile phone are missing. All this is unusual since he would never use that route (as per the last location) to come home. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed 270 lives, hospital authorities confirmed on Sunday the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching. Authorities have handed over 24 bodies to the victims' families, they added.

Citizens, alumni groups, and activists are demanding stringent safety measures in the wake of the unprecedented tragedy. It has heightened public fears and ignited debates over infrastructure development around airports. While the demand and anticipation for full-fledged air operations from the the industrial city have remained for years fuelled by aspirations for better connectivity and economic growth, the AI tragedy has raised questions about whether safety is being compromised in the rush to operationalise airports. For years, Ludhiana residents and business leaders have advocated for commercial flights, but now they are demanding a comprehensive re-evaluation of safety regulations and land-use planning around the airport zone. Deeply affected by the Ahmedabad tragedy, the alumni of SCD Govt College said the govt acts only after a tragedy of this scale. Brij Bhushan Goyal, organising secretary of the alumni body, said, "The lives lost are a result of regulatory negligence. Our politicians must act as guardians of public safety, not just as figureheads who react after public outrage." They have raised the demand for a complete ban on further housing or urban development around the airport. They said the periphery of Halwara airport is seeing rapid urbanisation, especially under development schemes by Glada, but it is putting lives at risk in case of any air mishap.
