Ecuador embassy in Qatar celebrates 216th independence anniversary

Ashraf Siddiqui The Embassy of the Republic of Ecuador in Qatar recently marked the 216th anniversary of Ecuador's independence. The national day, commemorated on August 10 each year, honours Ecuador's first declaration of independence from Spanish rule in 1809, known in Spanish as El Día del Primer Grito de Independencia de Quito. It is a public holiday and a proud moment for Ecuadorians worldwide. During the event in Doha, Ambassador HE Pascual Del Cioppo led the celebration and ceremonially cut the anniversary cake, with support from Sheraton Grand Hotel Doha, which also illuminated its façade with Ecuador's tricolour flag. Diplomatic ties between Ecuador and Qatar remain strong, having been significantly strengthened following the visit of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Ecuador in 2013 and President Rafael Correa's return visit to Qatar in 2014. Since then, both nations have signed several bilateral agreements across diverse sectors, including taxation, legal cooperation, education, trade, and aviation (cargo). On the economic front, President Daniel Noboa Azín marked the national day by announcing significant growth figures: an 8% increase in total sales in the first half of 2025 and a 22% rise in non-oil exports year-to-date. With inflation at just 0.72% and projected economic growth at 4%, these numbers reflect growing international confidence in Ecuador's economic policies and global engagement. Geographically, Ecuador is a country rich in natural diversity, straddling the Andes and the Amazon, and situated on the Equator, from which its name is derived. It has a population of approximately 17 million, with Quito as its capital and Spanish as the official language. Ecuador uses the US dollar as its currency and boasts a mixed economy of agriculture, industry, and services. Despite historical challenges, the country continues to build a resilient and forward-looking national identity.

Tourism sector contributes QR55 billion to Qatar's GDP in 2024: Qatar Tourism

Earlier this year, Qatar Tourism announced that the tourism sector as a whole contributed QR55 billion to the country's GDP in 2024, accounting for an estimated 8% of the total economy, a 14 percent increase compared to 2023. This demonstrates clear progress towards the Tourism Strategy 2030 target of raising the sector's contribution to 10-12 percent of GDP. Qatar's strong tourism performance is the result of a robust strategy led by Qatar Tourism and supported by its promotional arm, Visit Qatar. In the first half of the year, Visit Qatar launched several regional and global media campaigns to attract visitors from key target markets. This included the recent 'Moments Made for You' campaign, which highlights the range of experiences available during the summer season and invites visitors from GCC countries and beyond to discover Qatar. Visit Qatar also released a promotional film featuring English footballer David Beckham, showcasing the country's diverse tourism offerings, from heritage and culture to modern attractions and natural sites. Additionally, Visit Qatar expanded its stopover promotion campaigns, focusing on priority markets including the United Kingdom, United States of America, South Africa, China and Australia. These campaigns coincided with major events such as the Qatar Toy Festival, which recently completed its third edition, attracting over 130,000 visitors, a 12% increase from the previous year. Other notable events included the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition 2025, Ras Abrouq, Sealine Season, Shop Qatar, and Qatar International Food Festival, alongside key initiatives such as Scoop on the Sea and the ongoing whale shark tours. Engineer Abdulaziz Ali Al-Mawlawi, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Qatar, said: 'Our success in the first half of 2025 demonstrates sustained momentum and growing confidence from regional and global markets in Qatar's tourism offerings. We have attracted more visitors through a distinctive combination of major events, international campaigns, and innovative tourism products that cater to a wide range of interests. We will continue to invest in these areas and introduce initiatives that strengthen Qatar's position as a global destination blending authenticity with modernity, providing residents and visitors with a world-class experience year-round.' Qatar Tourism and Visit Qatar are currently preparing to host major events and launch key initiatives in the second half of 2025. The 2025/2026 cruise season will launch in November 2025, building on the success of the previous season, which saw 87 cruise ships dock in Qatar, a 19% increase from the year before, and welcomed over 360,000 visitors, up 4% from the prior season. The second half of the year will also feature the inaugural T100 Triathlon World Championship finals in Doha, held in partnership with the Professional Triathletes Organisation. Other highlights include the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, the F1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2025, the third Qatar Tourism Awards, the unveiling of the Michelin Guide Doha 2026, along with several other events to be announced soon.

Qatar Reads brings Arabic storytelling to Buenos Aires

Tribune News Network Doha Minister of Culture of Buenos Aires, Gabriela Ricardes and Counsellor at the Ministry of the State of Qatar in Argentina, Ali Al-Binali, officially inaugurated the 'Kalila wa Dimna' exhibition as part of Qatar Reads' participation in the Qatar–Argentina 2025 Year of Culture. Organised by Qatar Reads, a national initiative under Qatar National Library, the exhibition and accompanying cultural session marked a major highlight in this year's cross-cultural programming. The event brought together children, families, educators, and dignitaries to celebrate the power of storytelling and its role in establishing dialogue between cultures. Qatar Reads aims to cultivate a love of reading in Qatar through Nationwide programs and campaigns. It has extended its reach through partnerships with the Years of Culture initiative by promoting reciprocal literary exchange: while Arabic stories are shared abroad, Argentinian tales will be introduced to readers in Qatar later this year. This year's collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires brings the classical Arabic fables of Kalila wa Dimna to libraries across Argentina in Spanish. Themselves an embodiment of cross-cultural power, the fables, originating in ancient India, translated into Arabic in the 8th century, and passed on through Islamic and European literary traditions, are known for imparting moral lessons through talking animals and cunning plots. The exhibition, on view from August 6 to October 31, features 12 newly commissioned miniature-style paintings by Qatari artist Wadha Al Athba. Created with traditional materials such as indigo, saffron, and gold leaf, the artworks blend the aesthetics of classical Islamic art with contemporary visual storytelling. These twelve artworks were also featured in the Spanish edition of Kalila wa Dimna, published by HBKU Press. As part of the ongoing collaboration, Qatar Reads will be distributing 1,000 reading packages children across Argentina. The opening event at Biblioteca Ricardo Güiraldes included an immersive storytelling and arts workshop with 30 public school students from across Buenos Aires. Children enjoyed readings from the Spanish-language version of Kalila wa Dimna, participated in hands-on creative activities, and received custom-designed reading kits to continue their literary journey at home. Qatar's Ambassador to Chile and Argentina His Excellency Batal Mojab Al-Dosari commented earlier: 'The initiative reminds us that diplomacy can be expressed in many languages, but it is most enduring when written through stories that will resonate for generations and by sharing Qatari literature with Argentinian children, we plant the seeds of empathy and mutual understanding.' Qatar Reads has also made copies of the book available at the National Library of Argentina (Biblioteca Nacional), giving more children and families in Buenos Aires access to this timeless fable. Minister Ricardes echoed this sentiment, noting literature's power to bridge cultures: 'Hosting Qatar Reads in Buenos Aires reaffirms our belief that stories communicate universal values of kindness, courage, and wisdom. These values transcend borders, helping our children build a common cultural language through books.' Fatema Majed Al Malki, Qatar Reads Manager, commented, 'At Qatar Reads, we believe every story shared brings us one step closer to understanding. Today's session in Buenos Aires gives children the opportunity to see themselves in new narratives and to discover the beauty of cultural exchange. A child who reads across cultures grows into an adult who leads with empathy, nurtured by the seeds of curiosity and connection planted through these exchanges.' The illustrated edition of Kalila wa Dimna will be distributed widely to schools and libraries throughout Argentina. This initiative reflects a shared commitment by Qatar and Argentina to building intercultural understanding through literature and the arts. By using storytelling as a form of cultural diplomacy, the programme shows how narrative can transcend borders and help shape a more connected and empathetic global future.
