KUCHING (July 16): Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (MDS) Malaysia has officially launched its new Shell GTL SaraCare product range, marking another milestone in demonstrating the company's Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technology and its capabilities in driving innovation.
The launch took place during the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday and was officiated by State Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
Shell Malaysia Country Chair and Vice-President of Upstream Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman, said the launch reaffirms Shell's dedication to innovation and excellence.
'Today's launch reaffirms our unwavering commitment to continuous innovation and excellence in serving our customers. Shell MDS Malaysia is proud to be among the pioneers in GTL technology – home to Shell's first commercial-scale GTL plant in the world,' she said in a press release.
'For over three decades, we have been learning, evolving, and pushing the frontiers of GTL innovation to meet and exceed our customers' expectations. We believe SaraCare represents a meaningful milestone that will resonate with them.'
Shell GTL SaraCare is a premium, high-purity wax derived from natural gas. Its stable and safe-to-use ingredients offer superior performance as rheology modifiers, skin feel modifiers, waterproofing agents, wear resistance agents, structuring agents, and binding agents – making it an ideal component in the formulation of personal care and cosmetic products.
The name SaraCare pays tribute to Sarawak, the state in which the product originates, with 'Sara' derived from the name Sarawak itself.
The new product forms part of Shell MDS Malaysia's growing portfolio of specialty waxes, further strengthening its presence in the global market.
Among those present at the launch were Shell MDS Malaysia general manager Amir Bakar, Shell Malaysia director of Corporate Relations Cindy Lopez, and Shell MDS general manager of Marketing Au Tong Sing.
Commissioned in 1993, Shell MDS Malaysia is the world's first commercial GTL plant.
Following over two decades of research and development, Shell successfully revolutionised GTL technology, enabling the transformation of natural gas into ultra-pure liquid fuels, lubricants, chemicals, performance fluids, and solid waxes.
The company currently employs over 450 staff, nearly 90 per cent of whom are Sarawakians.

Nuclear not priority: Premier

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Larry Ralon Text Size: Abang Johari (right) officially launching IEW 2025, while Fadillah and others look on. KUCHING: Sarawak sees no need to pursue nuclear power as part of its energy mix given its abundant renewable energy resources, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said Sarawak's situation differs significantly from Peninsular Malaysia, which still relies heavily on coal-fired power generation and is now exploring alternatives, including nuclear energy. Advertisement 'Peninsular Malaysia is looking for suitable energy sources because they are still using coal. Coal is not a technology to generate energy; it's just a source. So, they are seeking options, one of them being nuclear,' he said. Abang Johari was responding to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof's recent statement that Malaysia would review its nuclear energy prospects as a potential power source. 'I believe our Deputy Prime Minister (Fadillah) has every right to explore nuclear technology, especially for Peninsular Malaysia. But in Sarawak, we already have hydro, gas combined cycle and solar. Based on these resources, we don't need nuclear,' he said, after officially launching the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at Borneo Convention Centre, Tuesday. Abang Johari said Sarawak is focused on generating clean, renewable energy and has set ambitious targets based on its available resources. 'We're targeting 10 gigawatts by 2030 and 15 gigawatts by 2035. Based on current projections, these are achievable using our hydropower, solar and gas,' he said. Abang Johari said Sarawak is already working with renewable energy companies, particularly in the solar sector and would continue to expand its capacity as technology improves. 'Sarawak will become a hub for renewable energy. So nuclear is irrelevant at this point because we have our own sources.' He also highlighted Sarawak's long-term interest in emerging technologies like fusion energy which, he said, could offer safer and cheaper alternatives to nuclear power. 'One of the technologies being developed now is fusion energy, which uses hydrogen molecules to produce energy. It's probably cheaper and safer than nuclear, and also produces hydrogen water. That gives us a strategic advantage,' he said. However, the Premier stressed the importance of thorough research and not rushing into any decisions. 'Let's wait first. Let's do the research. No need to be in a hurry. We have plans. But ultimately, we need solutions to the climate problem.' Abang Johari pointed out the severity of global warming, noting extreme heat waves in China and Japan exceeding 42°C, and warned that further increases could threaten human survival. 'That's why we are looking for a solution. But Alhamdulillah, our Government, our country and our people are committed to the environment. The key lies in technology,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KUCHING (July 16): A strategic partnership between Logan Energy Ltd (Scotland) and H2 Energy Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) is set to accelerate the development of green hydrogen infrastructure in Sarawak, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday. The collaboration is seen as a key step towards realising Sarawak's Post covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly in establishing the state as a regional leader in low-carbon energy and hydrogen technology. According to the press release, the partnership will focus on green hydrogen production, rural electrification, hydrogen mobility, and industrial decarbonisation. Both parties will also explore technology transfer, feasibility for local manufacturing, policy engagement, and ESG-driven investment opportunities. The MoU was signed during International Energy Week (IEW) 2025 here and builds on the groundwork laid during Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni's official visit to Aberdeen, Scotland in early June. Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Dr Hazland, IEW 2025 organising chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Rahmat and other distinguished guests were also present to witness the signing. The visit, arranged through the good offices of Scottish Development International (SDI), strengthened ties between Sarawak and Scotland's renewable energy sector and facilitated connections with Logan Energy. By combining Logan Energy's technical expertise with H2 Energy's local knowledge, the collaboration aims to position Sarawak as a leader in Asean's hydrogen economy. H2 Energy director Sandra Liz Hon Ai Ling said the collaboration reflects Sarawak's bold vision for a clean energy transition. 'This collaboration supports Sarawak's ambition to lead Asean's hydrogen economy while creating skilled jobs and delivering sustainable growth for local communities,' she said. Logan Energy Ltd Business Development Director Craig Stewart echoed the sentiment, noting the significance of the agreement.
