Soccer-Forward Delap joins Chelsea ahead of Club World Cup

(Reuters) -Forward Liam Delap has joined Chelsea on a six-year contract ahead of this month's Club World Cup, leaving Ipswich Town after they were relegated from the Premier League, the West London side said on Wednesday.
Media reports say Chelsea signed the 22-year-old in a deal worth 30 million pounds ($40.66 million).
The Winchester-born former Manchester City player helps plug a forward shortage at Chelsea before the Club World Cup, with Nicolas Jackson, who scored 10 league goals this season, being the only prominent forward available.
Attacking midfielder Cole Palmer led the club's scoring charts in the Premier League this season with 15 goals.
Delap, who was shortlisted for the Young Player of the Year award, scored 12 goals in 37 league appearances for Ipswich this season as they finished 19th.
"I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," Delap said in a Chelsea statement.
"It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies."
Chelsea kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Club Leon on June 16.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Brazilian-born footballer playing in Ho Chi Minh City, could help Malaysia beat Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier on June 10 at Bukit Jalil. Endrick dos Santos, currently on loan from JDT to Ho Chi Minh City FC, believes his "inside knowledge" of Vietnamese football could give Malaysia the edge. The midfielder has spent the past year playing in the 1, where many of Vietnam's national players also ply their trade. Dos Santos said in Kuala Lumpur today that he has studied the Golden Star Warriors' strengths and weaknesses. And he has held discussions with his national teammates and Harimau Malaya analysts. "They are fast, strong and aggressive, but they also have weaknesses. But I believe we should be in a good position again," he said. Harimau newcomer Hevel proves doubters wrong with Melaka claim
KUALA LUMPUR: Amid the ongoing controversy over Harimau Malaya's latest heritage recruits, Dutch-born Hector Hevel has silenced the doubters by confirming his Malaysian roots through his grandfather from Melaka. The 29-year-old midfielder, who made his debut and scored in Malaysia's 2-0 win over Nepal during the Asia Cup qualifiers in March, is delighted to be recalled by coach Peter Cklamovski for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10. "My Malaysian heritage comes from my grandfather — he's from Melaka, so there's no issue," said Hevel. "I haven't had much connection as many of the family have passed away, but when I play here for JDT, I'll visit and learn more about it."
