This Powder Sunscreen Is My Secret for Midday Touchups

I've tried just about every type of sunscreen—spray, cream, gel, you name it—and I've never been loyal to one format. (What can I say, a girl likes options!) For me, the most important thing is that the product checks these boxes: SPF 30 or higher, blends easily, water-resistant, and easy to reapply.
I'm newer to the powder SPF game, so I was excited to try the just-launched Eminence Organics Sun Defense Minerals sunscreen, which at first glance seemed to meet my criteria and then some. This category of SPF is typically lightweight, mess-free, and can be reapplied without ruining your makeup—a major plus. I took Sun Defense Minerals along with me on a recent bucket-list vacation to Kenya, and let's just say it was the MVP of my toiletry bag. Read on to get the full scoop.
It's a featherlight mineral sunscreen in powder form. According to quadruple board-certified Mohs skin cancer and cosmetic surgeon Hooman Khorasani, MD: "The main benefit of powder sunscreen is that you can reapply it over makeup nicely. I also recommend using powders on and around the hairline or thinning areas because they can be applied without making hair greasy."
Sun Defense Minerals provides broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection and a buildable, silky matte finish to help manage shine and perfect the complexion. In comparison to other powder sunscreens on the market, Dr. Khorasani likes that this one doesn't leave a cakey finish. It's water- and sweat-resistant for up to 40 minutes and comes in six shades, including Sheer. I chose Medium, which has a warm beige undertone. The built-in brush is soft, and the twist-up design makes on-the-go touch-ups easy.
Another reason Dr. Khorasani recommends Sun Defense Minerals is its formula, which contains natural ingredients that he says are typically well-tolerated for different skin types including sensitive. In addition to zinc oxide for sun protection, it also has green-tea extract and buriti oil to nourish and hydrate.
Activate the brush before your first application by twisting the tube and removing the inner blocker at the center of the brush. Then replace the cap and tap until the product comes out. Once the brush is activated and the bristles are filled with product, press it firmly on skin and evenly dust it over the desired area in circular motions.
As with any other sunscreen, apply it as the last step in your skincare routine. For touch-ups, it can go right on top of makeup (the Sheer shade is especially great for this).
I never skip sunscreen—whether it's sunny or cloudy, or even when I'm indoors most of the day. I'm not afraid of aging, but I credit my consistency with sun protection with keeping my skin healthy, resilient, and fine-line-free.
After using this powder for a couple of weeks, I've given it a well-earned spot in my daily regimen—and it's now a bag staple. I reach for it constantly—on long walks with my dog, when running errands, and most recently, of course, during my trip to Kenya. It's my new go-to for midday reapplication, especially for park and pool hangs. It gives my complexion a filter-like, blurred finish that's even without ever feeling heavy or messing up my makeup. And as someone who loves to travel, I really appreciate that I can pack it without stressing about TSA limits or spills in my carry-on.

Health exam shows small nodule on Biden's prostate. Now what?

Former President Joe Biden was hospitalized overnight last Friday in Philadelphia for 'further evaluation' of a small nodule found on his prostate during a physical exam. Biden's spokesman told The New York Times he would not be providing any additional information about the former president's care. But prostate issues are not uncommon in older men. Biden is 82 and was the oldest serving president when he left office in January. A number of issues can be found in older prostates, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (called simply BPH and very common), prostatitis and prostate cancer. The National Institute on Aging explains that the prostate is a small gland that helps men make semen. It wraps around the tube that carries both semen and urine from the body and the prostate naturally tends to enlarge as men age. BPH requires 'watchful waiting' to see if symptoms such as urination frequency and pain or lower back and groin area pain and stiffness get worse. Medication can also be given to shrink the prostate or provide pain relief by relaxing the muscles. Other, less common approaches include surgery or use of radio waves or lasers. Acute bacterial prostatitis usually starts with a bacterial infection, so the institute recommends men visit their doctor if the symptoms of prostate trouble are accompanied by fever, chills or pain. It's typically treated with antibiotics. There are two other degrees of prostatitis — the 'itis' part in medicine means inflammation — including chronic bacterial infection and 'chronic prostatitis,' which is chronic pelvic pain syndrome. That, like the treatments for BPH, can require medicine, surgery or lifestyle changes to provide relief. After screening tests including a digital exam and blood work, a person with a nodule or enlarged prostate may be referred to a urologist for a biopsy, which takes small tissue samples to look for cancer. Even if cancer is detected, treatment may be watchful waiting because prostate cancer is often, though not always, slow-moving. Other treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy and hormone therapy or a combination. The concern on everyone's mind is, of course, prostate cancer, which is relatively common for older American men. Risk goes up with age after 50, family history, regularly consuming a high-fat diet and race, as prostate cancer is most common in Black men, followed by white, Hispanic and Native American men. Asian American men have the lowest risk. ABC News reported it's not the first brush with potential cancer for Biden. 'In February 2023 during his presidency, Biden had a lesion removed from his chest that was cancerous and, before entering office, Biden had several non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery.' Mohs is a tissue-sparing procedure that takes cancerous tissue but as little noncancerous tissue as possible by checking tissue margins for cancer cells. Basal cell carcinoma, which is the type of cancer he had, does not typically 'spread' to other parts of the body. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the U.S., aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, impacting nearly 115 men per 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's more than twice as many as the number of men who get lung and bronchus cancer, colon and rectum cancer or urinary bladder cancer, which are the next most common. In 2021, close to 237,000 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed. While most older men who do have prostate cancer die with the disease, rather than of it, prostate cancer can kill. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths for men, behind lung and bronchus cancer. In 2022, 33,363 men died of prostate cancer in the U.S., per the CDC. According to Newsweek, Biden was declared 'fit to serve' in February 2024 after a physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

MIMEDX Announces Publication of Health Economics Data in Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS)

Propensity Score-Matched, Comparative Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Company's EPIFIX® Placental Allograft Product MARIETTA, Ga., May 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MiMedx Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: MDXG) ('MIMEDX' or the 'Company') today announced the publication of its health economics data for reconstruction of cutaneous wounds with EPIFIX® (Dehydrated Human Amnion Chorion Membrane, or DHACM) following Mohs surgery. The study has been published in the May 2025 issue of Journal of Drugs in Dermatology: 'Placental allograft reconstruction of cutaneous wounds following Mohs surgery: a propensity score-matched comparative cost-effectiveness analysis.' Mohs surgery is widely accepted as the gold standard for treating many types of skin cancer, including basal and squamous cell carcinomas, which are the most common cancers in the United States. MMS is performed over 850,000 times per year in the U.S., primarily by specially trained dermatologists operating in an outpatient setting. The procedure, which involves the removal of layers of cancerous skin tissue, typically ends with an autologous tissue-based closure over the treatment area. However, over the last several years, practitioners have increasingly started to evaluate the utility of placental allografts, such as EPIFIX, to aid in the closure of the impacted surface. 'We are thrilled to continue expanding the number of specialties and treatment applications that see real-world results with our products, both in terms of clinical success and cost-effectiveness,' said Joseph H. Capper, MIMEDX Chief Executive Officer. 'This retrospective study of 429 Mohs patients demonstrates the unique ability of our placental allografts to provide an alternative for those who are not suitable candidates for traditional surgical methods. We expect the data collected to inform clinicians and health policy makers of the benefits of innovative approaches in high-risk surgeries, particularly as hospital systems focus on health economics as a driving factor in decision-making.' In the study, DHACM significantly reduced adverse post-repair sequelae, with 97.2% of patients experiencing no complications compared to 78.7% with traditional methods such as autologous tissue-based flaps and grafts. Placental allografts lead to substantial savings in these procedures by minimizing postoperative complications and reducing the need for additional procedures. Patients treated with placental tissue also reached closure faster, with an average length of care of 33.3 days compared to 48.3 days for those with autologous tissue repairs.
