The River Cruise Lookbook: Effortless Outfits for Every Stop Along the Way

Miami Herald08-07-2025
Repeat after me: River cruises are not the same as ocean cruises when it comes to fashion. I learned this lesson after my first Viking vacation, sailing the Danube. I chose outfits for that trip based on my prior cruises aboard Norwegian and Princess, but quickly learned I'd committed two cardinal packing sins:
I brought too much.I didn't bring what I needed.
I'm a river cruise packing pro now, having cruised the Nile and Burgundy's canals. Learn from my mistakes. Here are tips for packing a smart and stylish river cruise wardrobe.
Ready to explore the world? We can help.
Think of your river cruise boat as a floating hotel where you relax at the end of busy touring days. This differs greatly from ocean cruise ships that offer 24/7 entertainment, dining and activities. I know many cruise lovers who never visit a port. For them, the cruise ship is the vacation destination.
Onboard a river cruise, there are no formal dinners, nightclubs or shows that require special occasion dresses. There are usually no fitness centers or pools. And you'll be touring a lot on a river cruise. Comfy shoes and day outfits are essential to stay fresh.
The good news is that it's much easier to pack for a river cruise if you avoid overthinking and packing a lot of "just in case" items. For my Egyptian river cruise, I debated packing a second bathing suit for days until I reminded myself that I was the only person who dipped into the Viking hot tub, and I did so exactly once.
Outfit Essentials for Busy Excursion Days
Pricing for river cruises routinely includes multiple daily excursions. I didn't skip one on any of my cruises. The days were long, busy and wonderful. You'll want comfortable outfits in breathable fabrics. And don't forget layering separates to add and subtract as the temperature changes.
Consider packing the following for touring days on a river cruise:
Flowy midi dresses, relaxed button-down linen shirts, tailored shorts.Breathable fabrics: cotton, linen, tech blends.Layers for morning/evening chill or air-conditioned interiors.Crossbody or shoulder bags for city stops.
You're Only as Happy as Your Toes
Expect to log thousands of steps on a river cruise, possibly 20k or more. You'll want comfortable walking shoes or sandals unless you want to be limping by Day Three. I favor Brooks running shoes or Teva sandals. They're lightweight, supportive and come in enough color and style options so you can find one that's cute enough.
After Dark on a River Cruise
It's super quiet when the sun goes down on a river cruise. Groups gather in the ship lounge for cocktails and conversation. Often, there's a casual lecture about the next day's sights. There might be entertainment, but it's low-key, not a Broadway-style production like you'd find on an ocean cruise.
Dress for your river nights like you're going out to a restaurant dinner on a Saturday with your best friends. Casual chic is the best way for me to describe the look, and here are the key elements:
Versatile dresses, dressy tops + trousers, jumpsuits.Lightweight accessories like scarves and jewelry for color and sparkle. One neutral sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings on deck.
Be Prepared for Weather
Sunscreen is your skin's best friend. Pack one that smells great, so reapplying is a treat, not a chore. Your hat and sunglasses will feature prominently in your photos. Be sure to choose ones that make you feel great. You'll project that confidence in your pics.
Other weather-ready items to pack include:
Quick-dry layers or packable jackets for rainy stops.Activewear for biking or hiking excursions.Bathing suit and swimsuit cover-up for a hot tub dip.
About that hot tub…if you choose to soak, you'll likely be climbing into the tub in full view of your fellow passengers. I felt comfortable in a modest one-piece. And I was happy to have a cover-up to toss on for lounging on the deck.
Restrict your wardrobe color palette for mix-and-match outfit options.Use packing cubes. On cruises, I remove them from my suitcase and put them in the stateroom dresser, so unpacking takes just a few minutes.A travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray works wonders to freshen your clothes so you can get the most wear out of them.A power adapter is essential for cruising abroad.
Because you don't need multiple special occasion outfits, swimsuits and shoes, it's quite possible to pack for your river cruise in a carry-on. However, if I've leveraged a free checked bag by using my airline credit card or upgraded my seat with points, I'll bring a bigger bag. The extra room means I never have to say no to a souvenir.

Tips to Turn Your Bathroom into a Luxury Retreat at Home

What if your next fantastic vacation wasn't at a five-star hotel, but down the hall? That humble little bathroom you walk through every morning has untapped potential. Your bathroom can be where serenity meets glamour, where the world dissolves the moment you turn on the tap. Imagine entering a spa after a hard day among opulent textures, relaxing scents, and serene colours. A few deliberate modifications could turn your bathroom into a luxury oasis without costing too much. Although high-end repairs can be expensive, there are easy updates that have a great impact. Invest in mood lighting and natural elements to produce a calm atmosphere, or begin by adding soft towels, like cheap bath towels that still feel luxurious. It all comes down to arranging a trip that transforms your bathroom into your sanctuary. Colours shape the tone. Select gentle, tranquil colours. Imagine whites, beiges, and toned greys. Pastel hues fit well, too. These hues give the area a more spacious and lighter appearance. Stay away from loud, strong hues. They could overwhelm the space. Walls, tiles, and accessories should all share the same tone. This gives the impression of being smooth and calming. You can add texture using organic materials. Consider stone, wooden, or linen accents. This little tweak immediately improves the room. Lighting transforms everything. Replace bright overhead lights with warm, soft ones. Install dimmable LED bulbs. They let you create the mood. Install layered lighting; for everyday operations, hang sconces close to mirrors. For drama, think about pendant lights or a chandelier. A spa-like vibe may be enhanced with candles. Your body and mind are soothed by soft light. It makes your bathroom into a luxury getaway. The small touches define luxury. Substitute plush, top-grade towels for antiquated ones. Select either Turkish or Egyptian cotton. These are absorbent and soft. Coordinate your towels with the colour scheme of the room. Hotel sense comes from well-folded stacks or towel warmers. Remember a plush robe. Hanging it on a hook or behind the door provides a touch of resort-like appeal. Invite the outside in. Natural components comfort the senses. Plant use will brighten and freshen the area. In damp bathrooms, peace lilies, aloe vera, or ferns flourish. Include hardwood accents. Bamboo bath mats, wooden chairs, or trays work well. For a spa feel, use stone or orpebble-stylee décor. Even a bowl of smooth river rocks can help. Nature brings tranquillity, calmness, and equilibrium to your home. Little adjustments have a major effect. Swap out old faucets, knobs, and shower heads. Choose finishes such as brushed gold, matte black, or polished chrome. These quickly update the area. Get a high-end impression by putting in a rainfall or handheld showerhead. Think of a thermostatic control system for water temperature. Without a total refurbishment, a sleek faucet and contemporary handles transform your bathroom. More calm results from a clutter-free bathroom. Counters should be cleaned. Keep goods in fashionable bins or baskets. Arrange things nicely on trays. For storage, include wall-mounted shelves or beneath sink cabinets. Only keep daily needs out. Keep the rest behind shut doors; use labels or planners to keep things neat. Calm comes from minimalism. A tidy area allows you to relish the beauty and usefulness of your bathroom escape. Incorporate scents and sounds to improve relaxation. Add essential oil diffusers, incense, or scented candles. Lavender, eucalyptus, and sandalwood are great for soothing the mind. Play natural sounds or soft music. To maintain safety, use a waterproof speaker. Background noise masks distractions and aids relaxation. This tiny detail turns your restroom into a serene hideaway, luxurious and personal. Creating a luxurious bathroom retreat at home costs you neither a large budget nor anything at all. Concentrate on texture, colour, lighting, and arrangement. Little improvements like soft towels, cosy lights, or a fresh showerhead can make a huge impact. Make use of calm fragrances and organic components. Maintain order and calm. These accents help you to relax and recharge in a soothing environment. Your bathroom will no longer be only a practical area. It will be your vacation, right at home. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

I upgraded to premium economy on an 8-hour Norse Airlines flight. It surpassed my expectations in so many ways.

A few months ago, my procrastination caught up to me as I tried booking a last-minute flight home from Paris back to the US. I'm typically a loyal Delta flyer, but I experienced sticker shock when I saw the prices of its last-minute economy flights back home. So, although I don't usually fly with budget airlines, I found myself researching flights on Norse Atlantic Airways. The Norwegian airline is known for having affordable transatlantic flights, and its nonstop options to get me back to the US were hundreds of dollars cheaper than what I'd seen elsewhere. So, I paid $670 for an eight-hour flight in premium from Paris to New York City. (From there, I'd take a cheap flight home to Texas.) Although I was skeptical about the low prices — my premium Norse seat was still way cheaper than a similar flight in Delta's economy section — I ended up being pleasantly surprised. My ticket came with priority check-in, which I loved I chose to upgrade to a premium ticket because economy didn't include amenities I wanted and would otherwise have to pay out of pocket for, like meals and a checked bag. Fortunately, my premium ticket even came with priority check-in, which I was very grateful to have. When I arrived at my gate at Charles de Gaulle, the check-in line for my flight looked incredibly long. Instead of waiting with the masses, I used my status to quickly board the shuttle bus to the plane. I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious my seat felt Norse doesn't have first-class cabins — its Boeing 787 Dreamliners are divided into premium and economy. Walking to my seat didn't take long, and I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw how spacious my premium-cabin seat looked. The seat pitch is 43 inches and the width is 19.5 inches, much larger compared to the 31-inch seat pitch and 17-inch width in economy class. My seat was so comfortable that I had no issues relaxing. I also had tons of extra legroom, though not having enough is rarely an issue for me at 5'1". Still, it was nice having so much space that my feet didn't even accidentally kick my bag, which was tucked under the seat in front of me. In premium, the in-flight entertainment screen could be pulled out from the armrest. On it, Norse offered an assortment of movies, TV shows, and music. I opted to watch "Gilmore Girls." The screen was easy to maneuver, and I liked that I could tuck it away when I wasn't using it. The flight had fairly standard amenities — but I couldn't reach some of the seat controls The flight attendants came by and handed everyone in my cabin a complimentary set of headphones, earplugs, an eye mask, and a soft Norse blanket. I didn't have to pay for my sodas, water, wine, or two in-flight meals since they were included in my premium upgrade. At one point, flight attendants even came by the premium section and offered to top off my wine, free of charge. It was such a nice touch. Although the spacious premium seats provided plenty of room for me to curl up and nap, I couldn't reach the buttons to control the fans or reading lights. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have been able to reach the call button from my seat, either. I also had to ask for help retrieving my carry-on when the plane arrived in New York. On other airlines, I've been able to stand on my tip-toes to grab my luggage, but I would have needed a stepladder to grab my things from Norse's bulkheads. None of that was a major issue, but it's something worth keeping in mind if you're a similar height. I'd fly internationally with Norse again — and I'd stick with my upgrade All in all, the low-cost airline impressed me. I was especially grateful I'd splurged for a premium ticket, even though economy ones were hundreds of dollars cheaper. The extra space alone (not to mention the checked bag, food, drinks, and priority check-in) made the upgrade well worth it. Prices may vary (especially for last-minute bookings), but I'm still impressed that my upgraded Norse Atlantic ticket cost me less than what I'd have paid to fly Delta in economy. Plus, my overall experience was more pleasant than I expected. My seat felt pretty top-notch for a low-cost carrier, and I commend the entire staff for being so friendly, helpful, and welcoming throughout the flight. However, I won't be committing my loyalty to Norse Airlines anytime soon. It has a limited selection of routes, no direct flights to my home airport in Texas, and no frequent-flyer rewards program. So, for now, I think I'll stick with Delta and rack up miles for future rewards — but if I end up needing another short-notice international flight, I'd definitely fly premium with Norse Airlines.

Adventure begins at home for architecture buffs who want to explore the Elgin area

If a staycation is on the schedule for this summer, Explore Elgin has created an 'Architecture Adventure' designed to appeal to residents and visitors alike. The three-day itinerary is one of nine tours that tourism branch of the Elgin Area Convention and Visitors Bureau put together to encourage people to check out what the city and its environs has to offer. Each itinerary includes places to stay, dine and explore in the communities it receives funding to promote: Elgin, Bartlett, Burlington, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Hampshire, Pingree Grove, Sleepy Hollow, South Elgin and West Dundee. While other 'adventures' encourage visits to places with scenic beauty, great fishing, underground art and other attractions, the architecture tour is designed for those wanting to dive into the history of the Elgin area through its buildings. 'The area has several unique buildings and beautiful architectural features that call us back to a different time and place,' said Mary Dulabaum, the convention and visitors bureau's marketing and community outreach manager. 'We try to call attention to remarkable and unusual buildings, often raising awareness of some locations that even long-term residents may not know about,' she said. 'We also highlight locations where the current owners are willing to have the attention and even offer tours.' If you follow the suggested three-day itinerary, it will recommend a visit to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple in Bartlett, on the first day. Dulabaum calls the traditional place of worship that opened in 2005 a must-see. It was built in the traditional style using hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone, she said. No trip to Elgin is complete without a trip to downtown historic district, which has architecture dating back to the 1800s, Dulabaum said. Its architectural highlights include the Elgin Tower building, Elgin Professional building and Elgin National Watch Co. Observatory. Day two takes visitors to the Elgin History Museum located in 'Old Main,' a Greek Revival-style building that dates back to 1856 and features exhibits illuminating different aspects of the city's development and changes over the years. Another recommendation is the Elgin Public Museum and Lord's Park pavilion in Lords Park. The museum, with exhibits on natural history and anthropology, was built in 1907 and is the oldest museum building in Illinois still in use as a museum. After that, head out to Hampshire to see the only farmhouse designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Tours of the Muirhead Farmhouse are available but must be made online with a three-day notice. On the third day, take a walking tour of the homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places found in the city's historical districts, which run the gamut from painted ladies to houses ordered through the Sears catalog. 'Our main priority is to call attention to destination-style architecture that we think visitors would drive in to see,' Dulabaum said. '(The idea is to) lead someone who is not familiar with our area around so they can explore. We want them to spend a weekend exploring our region and have so much to do that they stay overnight in one of our hotels.' Explore Elgin's Architecture Adventure itinerary is available on its website, and as part of the convention and visitors bureau's new brochure.
