Nuns' bail based on merit, not external intervention, says Minister Sivankutty; V. Muraleedharan contrasts religious freedom in India with global Christian persecution
The court granted them bail after understanding the facts of the case. It was not due to assistance from anyone, as some falsely claim, he added.
Mr. Sivankutty was inaugurating a civic reception organised in honour of Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I, head of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, at the St. Peter's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Cathedral here on Sunday.
While reiterating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's unwavering support to the Jacobite Church for all just causes, the Minister assured that instances of religious persecution would never occur in Kerala. 'No community, including Christians, will be subjected to such harassment here. But, how many other States in the country can claim to uphold such liberty for believers of various faiths? It is time people realise this reality.'
'Christians persecuted all over'
However, former Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader V. Muraleedharan drew attention to the widespread persecution of Christians across the world, contrasting it with the relative religious freedom enjoyed in India.
He cited instances of violence targeting Christians in countries such as Syria and Iraq to emphasise the gravity of the global situation. 'Christians are persecuted in many of such places. Priests from those regions could tell us what State-sponsored repression of minorities looks like,' he remarked.
Mr. Muraleedharan also referred to a recent terror attack on a church at Damascus that left nearly 25 people dead, and the civil war that had engulfed Syria which forced even the Patriarch of Antioch and the supreme head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Ignatius Aphrem II, to cut short his visit to India last year.
'In India, whether in Thiruvananthapuram or elsewhere, no one needs to fear getting shot at or dying in explosions while attending such programmes. The situation here is vastly different,' he asserted.
Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I called for a lasting solution with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, Resident Metropolitan, Malankara Syrian Orthodox Theological Seminary, presided over the function.
Antony Raju, MLA, Metropolitan Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil of Syro Malabar Archeparchy of Changanassery, Bishop Antony Mar Silvanios of the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, Bishop Mathews Mor Silvanus of the Thiruvananthapuram Diocese of Believers Eastern Church, former Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson and church vicar Alexander Thomas also spoke.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister G.R. Anil on Wednesday inaugurated the Statewide distribution of 43,000 newly approved priority ration cards. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had identified 2,94,578 ineligible families holding priority ration cards. As many as 17,596 cards were confiscated from ineligible card holders through the government's intensive verification drive 'Operation Yellow'. As part of such efforts, over 5,29,000 ration cards were reassigned since the LDF government came to power, he said. Clarifying that the revision of the priority list is an ongoing process, he said: 'If a family member secures a government job or the family income exceeds the eligibility threshold, they will be removed from the list,' he said. Deputy Mayor inaugurates renovated Aristo Road amid LDF boycott
The inauguration of the renovated Aristo Road turned controversial on Wednesday after Deputy Mayor M.L. Rosy went ahead with the function despite a boycott by Mayor M.K. Varghese and key members of the ruling LDF council. Though the LDF leadership, including the Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman Varghese Kandamkulathy, abstained from the event, the Deputy Mayor delivered the inaugural address and symbolically opened the newly completed road . In her speech, Ms. Rosy hit out at the politicisation of development work, stating that infrastructure projects should not become battlegrounds for party politics. She credited councillors Leela Varghese and Sindhu Anto Chacko for their sincere efforts in making the Aristo Road a reality, noting that multiple protests had been carried out both inside and outside the council to push the project forward. She further alleged that the Mayor's office is being run by temporary staff. Opposition leader Rajan J. Pallan accused the LDF of deliberately trying to hijack the inauguration and turn it into an LDF-only event, sidelining the efforts of other councillors. He claimed that Ms. Varghese and Ms. Chacko had informed the Mayor about the inauguration schedule and had officially handed over the event notice at his chamber.

NEW DELHI: With the first round of a lecture series scheduled from August 26 to 28 in Delhi, RSS chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat is expected to deliver a comprehensive inaugural address covering a wide range of contemporary topics — from Operation Sindoor to SIR and, possibly, the US stance on tariffs on India. The Sangh's national chief of publicity, Sunil Ambekar, briefing the media on Tuesday, said the organisation is also reaching out to individuals from diverse ideological backgrounds as part of its inclusive approach to the planned lecture series, which will commence in Delhi and continue in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata.
