Sobo Mumbai Falcons
, one of the two new teams in the upcoming
T20 Mumbai League
, have signed up cricket legend and India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain
Kapil Dev
as the team's brand ambassador, TOI has learnt. The side's head coach will be Mumbai senior men's team's head coach
Omkar Salvi
. Salvi is also the bowling coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing IPL.
Confirming the development, the team's co-owner Ameet Harjinder Gadhoke said, "Yes, Kapil Dev sir will be the face of our team. He has been the mentor of our racing team Mumbai Falcons since the last six years. Kapil sir will be there to guide the boys - he will be present in one or two practice sessions and will attend the team's matches in Mumbai. His mere presence will be a huge boost for our team."

For the record, the
Mumbai Falcons racing team
was founded in Nov 2019 by the
Gadhoke Group
. They entered the F3 Asian championship in 2021. It became the first Indian team to compete and finish in the top three in F3 Asian Championship with drivers Kush Maini and Jehan Daruvala.
Who's that IPL player?
On 20 February 2022, Mumbai Falcons secured a historic double victory in the Formula Regional Asian Championship in UAE winning both the Driver and Teams Championship. In 2023, the team clinched both titles in the inaugural Formula Regional Middle East Championship with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had replaced Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes- Benz' F1 team, and the F4 UAE Championship with James Wharton.

BENGALURU: Gate No. 7 - which gives a sweeping view of those coming into Chinnaswamy Stadium through the main entrance - turned out to be a death trap after rumours started floating that free tickets would be distributed there. In minutes, the gate turned into an epicentre of panic and disorder as fans who had gathered in massive numbers to celebrate RCB's first ever IPL victory fell over each other in a mad scramble for tickets. "People completely lost control. It was a disaster," said Achimanya from Rajajinagar neighbourhood. Sudden rain around 5.30pm made the situation worse. The stadium has 21 stands with 13 gates. While gates 9 and 10 were reserved for state cricket association members, gates 5, 6, 7, 19 and 20 - located along the team's main entry route - saw the highest concentration of crowds. Maximum casualties were reported from gate 7. Poor crowd management and dilly-dallying over allowing a victory parade through the city contributed to the unfolding tragedy. "There was an ambulance with 40 injured people. I was lucky to get out in time. Even police were struggling to manage the crowd," said Avinash S (31) from RR Nagar. Sinchana N (25), who got caught in the melee, said, "I could avoid the worst only because I reached late. Cops were not controlling the crowd in the real sense, and were just pushing people around."
