BCCI Breaks Silence On Shreyas Iyer's ODI Captaincy Rumours: "There Have Been..."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has addressed the rumours of Shreyas Iyer 's possible elevation as ODI captain. On Thursday, multiple reports claimed that Iyer, who was left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad, is leading the race to succeed Rohit Sharma as India's next skipper in the 50-over format. Sourced told NDTV that the BCCI is keen on relieving Rohit, who is in the twilight of his career, from leadership burden. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Saikia, however, quashed all rumours, saying that the BCCI management hasn't had any discussions on this matter. "That's news to me. There have been no such discussions," said Saikia. Iyer has been in the news ever since he was ignored by the selectors for the upcoming Asia Cup. India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained Shreyas' absence during the squad announcement and told reporters earlier this week, "With regards to Shreyas, it's not his fault, nor is it ours. It's just that you can pick 15, and at the moment you'll have to wait for his chance." Iyer was India's highest run-getter and overall second-highest run-getter in CT 2025, with 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, with two fifties and a best score of 79. Iyer ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter in the recently concluded IPL 2025 and had his best season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. His best score was 97*. Since the last T20 World Cup win, the Mumbai batter has played 26 T20 matches and scored 949 runs, with an average of 49.94, at a strike rate of 179.73, and a century and seven fifties. His best score is 130 not out.

AUS vs SA 2nd ODI LIVE SCORE UPDATES: Proteas eye series win; toss at 9:30 AM IST

AUS vs SA 2nd ODI LIVE UPDATES: Hosts Australia will aim to end their three-match losing streak in ODIs with a win over the Proteas today and try to keep the series alive The three-match ODI series between Australia and South Africa moves to the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday, August 22, with the hosts desperate to keep the contest alive. South Africa holds a 1-0 advantage after dominating the opening encounter, while Australia are under pressure to regroup and deliver a stronger performance to end their ODI losing streak and keep the series alive. Proteas brimming with confidence South Africa arrives in Mackay with the belief that they can wrap up the series early. Their first ODI victory was built on a disciplined batting effort and a clinical bowling display. Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Matthew Breetzke all registered important half-centuries, laying the platform for a competitive total. The highlight, however, came from Keshav Maharaj, whose superb spell of left-arm spin dismantled the Australian batting order and earned him his maiden five-wicket haul in one-day internationals. With momentum on their side, the Proteas will feel confident of repeating their dominance. Australia searching for answers For Australia, the series opener exposed familiar weaknesses against spin. Chasing a tricky target, they were bundled out for 198 inside 41 overs, never quite threatening South Africa's grip on the match. The absence of experienced names such as Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis—who have all bid farewell to ODI cricket—was starkly felt. Their replacements in the middle order will now need to adapt quickly and show they can handle responsibility on the international stage. A much-improved batting display will be essential if Australia are to level the series. Key battles to watch Australia's top order, led by captain Pat Cummins' tactical calls and the batting form of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, will be under the spotlight. Countering Maharaj's spin threat will be crucial. For South Africa, the challenge will be to sustain their batting fluency against Australia's pace attack, which includes Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, both of whom will be eager to strike early. What's at stake While South Africa can secure a morale-boosting series win with one game to spare, Australia are fighting not just for survival in the series but also for belief in their evolving squad. With the next generation being tested in home conditions, Thursday's clash is more than just a must-win—it is a chance for Australia's new faces to prove they belong on the big stage. USA Cricket terminates ACE deal amid governance dispute

USA Cricket has terminated its long-term commercial agreement with American Cricket Enterprise Inc. (ACE), marking a dramatic rupture in a partnership once billed as the cornerstone of cricket's rise in the United States. Just last month, this publication reported how a contractual dispute between ACE and the board threatened USA Cricket's Olympic certification, its standing with the International Cricket Council (ICC), and even its authority over the sport domestically. In 2019, USA Cricket handed ACE — co-founded by Sameer Mehta, Satyan Gajwani, Vijay Srinivasan, and Vineet Jain — exclusive 50-year rights to operate elite T20 cricket in the country. In return, ACE pledged to finance national teams, build six stadiums, and establish professional leagues. Those promises coincided with the national side's on-field growth: co-hosting the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, stunning Pakistan en route to the Super 8s, and earning the ICC's Associate Member Men's Team Performance of the Year award. One of ACE's flagship projects was Major League Cricket (MLC), a professional T20 league that has completed three seasons. The tournament has attracted strong IPL investment, with four of its six franchises — MI New York (Mumbai Indians), Texas Super Kings (Chennai Super Kings), LA Knight Riders (Kolkata Knight Riders), and the Seattle Orcas (Delhi Capitals) — owned by Indian Premier League teams. MI New York claimed the most recent title, while the San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom complete the line-up. Yet governance strains soon surfaced. On June 23 this year, USA Cricket served ACE a breach notice, citing delayed payments, missed infrastructure targets, interference in board affairs, and overreach in international dealings. ACE rejected the claims, accusing the board of misrepresenting the original term sheet. 'USA Cricket entered into this partnership with ACE in good faith, with the shared vision of building sustainable infrastructure, providing competitive opportunities for our athletes, and creating commercial growth for the sport in America,' said Venu Pisike, USA Cricket Board Chairman. 'We are supportive for the growth and success of Major League Cricket and Minor League Cricket. But, when it comes to USA Cricket, ACE has consistently failed to meet its obligations under the agreement, which has jeopardized the broader development of cricket in United States. 'After years of engagement and repeated breach notices, USA Cricket has no choice but to terminate this agreement to protect the best interests of the sport and its stakeholders. Additionally, we also raised concerns around the circumstances under which ACE was given the contract and the usage of USA Cricket intellectual property,' he added. Published on Aug 22, 2025
