TAR UMT marks second year of Malaysia-China talent programme

The Sun24-07-2025
Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) recently celebrated the second year of its pioneering cross-border talent development initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry on a global scale.
In collaboration with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) and Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd (ESSB), TAR UMT launched the Malaysia-China (University-Industry Collaboration) Talent Development Programme to equip students with both academic knowledge and practical skills essential for today's competitive workforce.
The opening ceremony for the second batch of students took place on 17 July at TAR UMT's Kuala Lumpur campus. The event was graced by TAR UMT President Prof Dato' Indera Dr Lee Sze Wei, Prof Zhang Hu, Deputy Director of the International Student Center at USTB, ESSB CEO Wang Shenghua, and Dr Lee Kim Yee, Deputy Dean of the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).
A key highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the 2025 ESSB scholarships to 25 deserving students, enabling them to pursue their chosen programmes with full support. Among the recipients, 10 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering micro-credential programme will spend two years at TAR UMT before continuing their studies at USTB in Beijing.
The scholarship also supports five TAR UMT students studying accountancy, finance, and investment, alongside six students in engineering disciplines, including electrical and electronics, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering. The remaining four recipients are UTAR students, highlighting the broad reach and impact of the initiative.
In his opening remarks, Prof Dato' Indera Ir Dr Lee emphasised the importance of the programme. 'Launched in July 2024, this initiative provides a clear and forward-looking pathway for talent development by seamlessly integrating education with career preparation. It effectively closes the gap between academia and industry, meeting the growing demand for graduates who are both well-educated and workforce-ready.'
Prof Zhang echoed this sentiment, noting ongoing improvements to the programme. 'Since last year, we have refined the programme's structure, strengthened coordination, and enhanced support for students. This reflects our dedication to forging strong ties with industry, combining academic learning with real-world experience, and promoting growth in both education and employment sectors.'
Sharing the programme's early successes, Wang Shenghua said the first cohort had already made impressive strides, with two graduates now valuable contributors to ESSB. 'This initiative not only empowers local talent and invests in the future but also fosters closer integration between education and industry in Malaysia and China.'
One of the beneficiaries, Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering student Mei Jian Hao, expressed his gratitude: 'We are deeply grateful to ESSB for their generous support, which allows us to experience student life in both Malaysia and China. This unique opportunity will expand our technical skills and global perspective, laying a strong foundation for our future careers and inspiring us to pursue our dreams with determination.'
TAR UMT's Malaysia-China Talent Development Programme continues to set a benchmark for cross-border educational collaboration, nurturing a new generation of globally competitive professionals.

Malaysia expected to attract RM637bil investments in RE, green technology by 2050

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is expected to attract direct investments of about RM637 billion in renewable energy (RE) and green technology, in addition to creating 310,000 job opportunities by 2050, according to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the government has also set the local ownership equity in all RE projects introduced and implemented to be at least 51 per cent. He said this is to ensure that highly skilled job opportunities and technology transfer to local workers are carried out. "This includes the implementation of the Large-Scale Solar Programme, Feed-in Tariff Programme, Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) Programme and the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM) Programme,' he said in a written reply to a question from Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah (Rompin-PN) in Dewan Rakyat. Abdul Khalib wanted to know the ministry's plans to attract foreign direct investment in the green technology and circular economy sectors related to energy and water, as well as the expected impact on the creation of highly skilled job opportunities and technology transfer to the local workforce. Fadillah said the government would focus efforts on strengthening existing RE initiatives to provide certainty, incentives and wider green electricity supply options to industry players so that it would be an attractive factor for investors to invest in the country's RE industry value chain. He said that among the efforts that would be continued included strengthening the implementation of the Large-Scale Solar Programme as one of the main solar generation programmes to attract investments in the RE sector with minimal tariff increase implications for electricity consumers. "The government will also continue to implement the feed-in tariff mechanism and the Low Carbon Energy Generation Programme as a specific programme to attract investments in the field of generation from non-solar sources. "The ministry will streamline the implementation of CRESS to enable companies investing in the country to obtain green electricity supplies from selected RE generators directly, in addition to utility companies to fulfill environmental, social and governance commitments as well as continue to provide tax incentives, Green Investment Tax Allowance and Green Income Tax Exemption,' he added. - Bernama

‘I don't smoke', says Anwar, backing push to raise tobacco tax

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he agrees in principle with raising tobacco taxes. He was responding to calls for the government to review tobacco duties. 'I agree with the spirit of that proposal. I myself not only do not smoke, but also fully support anti-smoking campaigns,' he told reporters when asked about the matter. In 2015, Malaysia raised the excise duty on tobacco by 42.8 per cent. Together with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the overall tax on cigarettes increased from 28 sen per stick in 2014 to 40 sen in 2015. Since then, tobacco taxes have not been revised. In Budget 2024, Anwar's administration introduced a 5 per cent excise duty on chewing tobacco, but left cigarette taxes unchanged. In May, a Merdeka Center survey found that two-thirds of Malaysians support higher cigarette taxes, provided they are implemented moderately and predictably. The survey revealed that 66 per cent backed a tax hike, 25 per cent opposed it, and nine per cent were unsure. Support was strongest among those aged 21 to 30, with over 84 per cent in favour, while opposition was highest among respondents aged 51 to 60.

PM Anwar: Too soon to say if students should finish school at 16 to join workforce earlier

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said it is too early to decide whether students should complete secondary school by the age of 16 to enable them to enter the workforce by 21. He said the matter still requires thorough discussion before any decision can be made. 'We'll discuss that. It's too early,' he told reporters briefly after attending the Budget Engagement Session at the Finance Ministry's headquarters here. On Monday, former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli suggested in the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia should consider allowing students to complete secondary school by 16, enabling them to enter the workforce by 21. He said the policy shift was worth considering as the country moves towards becoming an ageing nation, stressing the need for a younger workforce to begin contributing to the economy earlier.
