Stray dogs return on Pune airport premises, PMC drive seems futile exercise
(Pics on mail) Pune: Kalyaninagar's Smita Sharma was shocked when she spotted stray dogs roaming on the Pune airport premises despite the PMC's recent drive, after she de-boarded from a plane from Ranchi around 11pm last week. "How are they back on the airport premises? I doubt if the airport authorities and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are doing their job seriously. All claims and assurances seem to be just lip service," she said. You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune The PMC had started a drive against stray dogs on the airport premises after an Air India Express plane from Bhubaneswar had to abort landing on June 29 because of the presence of a dog on the runway. In a weeklong drive, as many as 12 stray dogs were caught. After sterilisation, they were left outside the airport premises with the promise of continuous monitoring. Sarika Funde, the head of the PMC's veterinary department, told TOI, "We have set up 3-4 designated spots outside the airport for feeding these dogs after talks with local dog feeders. If dogs have been seen again on the airport premises, it seems they are being fed inside the facility. We will be checking the present situation and act accordingly." The official said, "Not just the dog feeders, flyers also tend to feed dogs behind the old canteen on the old terminal premises. We will have to check how the dogs have come back." A WhatsApp message was sent to the airport director, Santosh Dhoke, on Friday morning about the presence of stray dogs. A report was awaited till going to press. Not just Sharma, Balewadi's Kaushal Raj also spotted dogs on the airport premises after he flew in from Delhi late in the evening on July 31. "I was going towards AeroMall. A dog was loitering right in front of the crowded arrival area. Two-three other dogs were sitting near the old arrival area of the under-construction building. While one can understand that monitoring cannot happen all the time and dogs tend to wander, the authorities need to be vigilant in the wake of the Air India Express plane's incident. The Pune airport authorities have people to manage the traffic. They can be told to check the presence of stray dogs," he said. Aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar was critical about the issue. "The airport has been witnessing many incidents related to birds and dogs. It is important for the officials to be very serious and act responsibly," he said. What 'unusual' British military plane is flying over California, Arizona? Mission details
An unusual military aircraft has been making repeated flights over California and Arizona in recent weeks, puzzling spectators on the ground and sparking speculations from observers. Airbus A400M Atlas was seen making repeated trips across California and Arizona, sparking curiosity among observers.(AFP) According to Flightradar24 records, the plane - an Airbus A400M Atlas operated by the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force - has been flying out of Oceanside, Blythe and Yuma airports for several days. Witnesses in Morro Bay reported seeing it flying low over the coastline, while others in Cupertino claimed it passed overhead at an unusually low altitude, remarking on its unusual appearance and massive size. Not your typical passenger plane The Airbus A400M Atlas is a four-engine military airlifter specifically built for strategic and tactical missions. It can carry heavy-duty equipment such as armored vehicles, helicopters, and humanitarian aid over long distances. Unlike traditional jet-engine cargo planes, the A400M can operate from unpaved or semi-prepared runways, making it suitable for missions in remote or rugged terrain. Its design also enables deployment into high-risk environments: bullet-resistant windscreens, an armored cockpit, and defensive countermeasure flares help protect the aircraft and crew from potential threats. This combination of range, load capacity, and survivability makes it a unique presence in U.S skies. In 2023, the Paso Robles Press reported that British forces had been using Fort Hunter Liggett - a sprawling US Army training facility near Paso Robles - for parachute training. At the time, a Royal Air Force squadron leader noted that the diverse terrain and climate of the Central Coast provided ideal conditions for challenging airborne troops. Neither the UK Ministry of Defense nor press officers at Fort Hunter Liggett have made any comments in this regard.

Bhubaneswar-bound Air India Express plane suffers bird hit at Pune airport, passengers accommodated on another flight
An Air India Express flight from Pune to Bhubaneswar suffered a bird hit at the Pune International Airport Wednesday, and the pilots aborted take-off. Santosh Dhoke, Director, Pune airport, confirmed the incident to The Indian Express. An Air India Express spokesperson said, 'One of our aircraft had a suspected bird strike before take-off from Pune. As a precaution, we accommodated guests in an alternative aircraft, arranged on priority. We regret the inconvenience.' Increased incidents of bird hits around the Pune airport have raised concerns about risks to flights. On June 20, a bird hit was detected on a Delhi-Pune flight after it landed. In June, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s Solid Waste Management Department appointed officers and special teams for round-the-clock garbage management around the city airport. Dhoke wrote to the Pune Municipal commissioner on June 18 about garbage dumping by unidentified people along the eastern and western perimeter walls of the airport. He also mentioned potentially unauthorised shops, godowns, garages, and scrap yards around the airport, contributing to garbage and other dangers. Dhoke told The Indian Express Thursday, 'The cleaning operations that PMC had begun in the previous month are going on continuously. PMC is picking up garbage from all four sides. The results will definitely show, it is an ongoing process and not a one-time thing. Bird activity increases in the Monsoon season.' In a separate incident, a Delhi-Pune Air India flight was delayed by 4 hours and 26 minutes on Tuesday due to maintenance issues. An Air India Spokesperson in a statement said, 'Flight AI2982 operating from Delhi to Pune on 5 August was delayed due to a maintenance task identified prior to departure requiring additional time for rectification'. 'Our ground colleagues in Delhi airport extended support to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen delay. Arrangements were made to fly the passengers to their destination, Pune, at the earliest. At Air India, the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain top priority.' A passenger, Akhill Gupta, who was on the flight, posted about the delay on X. 'Boarded 1st flight at 12:30 hrs n landed now in Pune at 20:00 hrs. 2 hrs journey prolonged to 7:30 hrs. Thanks @MoCA_GoI for creating duopoly of airlines. Other one is worse than this, so we have no options. People rant and nothing happens.' Soham is a Correspondent with the Indian Express in Pune.
