Champion of Indian education M Thambirajah dies at 83
KUALA LUMPUR : Educationist and founder of the Sri Murugan Centre (SMC) M Thambirajah died today, aged of 83.
SMC co-director Surain Kanda said the public may pay their last respects tomorrow at SMC Ashramam in Petaling Jaya from 10am to 2pm, before the final rites at Nirwana Setia Alam at 3pm.
'He was more than just a leader; he was a visionary whose mission was clear, that every Indian home should produce at least one graduate.
'His efforts transformed the lives of thousands,' Surain told Bernama.
Thambirajah founded SMC in 1982 with the aim of uplifting Indian students through academic support, personal discipline and self-confidence.
What started as four small centres grew into a nationwide movement with over 103 physical and 128 virtual centres, currently serving more than 10,000 students annually.
An alumnus of Universiti Malaya, he went on to earn his master's and PhD from University of Washington, US, and later completed his bachelor of laws with honours from University of London.
He served as a senior lecturer at UM and authored several influential works, including the history textbook, Malaysia Dalam Sejarah.
His lifetime contributions were recognised both in Malaysia and internationally. He was conferred the title 'Tan Sri' in 2012 and received India's highest award for overseas Indians, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
Thambirajah also served on key national advisory bodies, including the special implementation task force on the Indian community under the Prime Minister's Department.
'He believed in action rather than rhetoric, and service over self,' said Surain, adding that over 52,000 students have graduated through SMC to date.
Thambirajah is survived by his wife A Indirani, children Dr T Sumitra and T Anand, and two grandchildren.

The 49-year-old, better known as FBI said the annual programme not only drew wide public participation but also offered individuals the chance to realign their routines and strengthen their relationship with the holy scripture. 'We really need to make an effort to bring the Quran to life, especially among the younger generation and society as a whole. 'Perhaps at this point in time we are too busy with work and other commitments that, without realising it, we drift further from the Quran, even though we know it is very important in our lives as Muslims. 'But praise be to Allah, with Malaysia #QuranHour and World Quran Hour, it provides us the chance to reset momentum and review our daily schedules to see whether we are truly allocating time for the Quran,' he told Sinar. Faizal, who hosts the FnN Pagi segment on Zayan FM, said the Malaysia #QuranHour is an impactful programme as it gathers large congregations and creates a collective spirit of remembrance. Photo for illustrative purposes only. - Photo: CANVA 'This programme gives us strong momentum because it involves the public. When there is a larger congregation, it motivates us. 'If we can hold concerts, why not allocate at least one day a year for a programme like this,' he said. He recalled being invited to the Malaysia #QuranHour at the International Islamic University Malaysia, where Surah al-Insan was recited and reflected upon at the mosque. 'The atmosphere was very uplifting. Some attended because they were invited by friends, others due to work assignments, but as the Prophet SAW said, even if we just pass by or listen, there is still reward. 'All the more so if we sincerely intend to join and reflect on the Quran,' he said. Faizal also reminded fellow celebrities and busy professionals that time management was a matter of priorities. 'Time is what we choose. In the past, I had many commitments to the point I felt there was never enough. 'So why not plan in advance by including Quran routines or programmes like this in our schedule. 'If we can lock in job dates early, why not lock the Malaysia #QuranHour date too, so it won't be disrupted by other events,' he said. Looking ahead, Faizal hopes the 11th edition of Malaysia #QuranHour will continue to thrive and be expanded nationwide. 'Zayan has also consistently support Malaysia #QuranHour,' he added.
