Astrophotographers help crack mystery of ‘sprite fireworks'
On May 19, 2022, two astrophotographers set up near the sacred lake of Pumoyongcuo on the southern Tibetan Plateau captured a vibrant display streaking across the Himalayan sky. Over a single night, Angel An and Shuchang Dong recorded over 100 red sprites, bursts of brilliantly colorful electrical discharges known for both their color and ethereal patterns. Rarely seen secondary jets also joined the atmospheric phenomena, as well as the first-known images in Asia of ghost sprites—greenish glowing that is sometimes seen near the base of an evening's ionosphere. One of the photos was so striking that it even went on to win the 'Skyscapes' category of the Royal Observatory Greenwich's 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.
While these dramatic 'sprite fireworks' displays are well-known, little is understood about how and why they form. However, researchers at China's University of Science and Technology are beginning to unravel red sprite behavior thanks in part to the astrophotographers' work. Their results, published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, illustrate the complex celestial interactions that can occur far above us.
Before they began to study the Himalayan red sprites, Gaopeng Lu and his colleagues encountered a problem: While visually arresting, An and Dong's recordings of the 2022 outbreak weren't timestamped. Without these reference points, Lu's team could not match the sprites to their parent lightning discharges. They came up with a creative workaround: While they didn't know exactly when the sprites occurred, they could figure out where they formed in the night sky. By matching the coordinates of 95 of the sprites with multiple orbital satellite trajectories and star chart positions, researchers managed to pinpoint each electrical event's time to within a one second margin of error. From there, they could link around 70 percent of the red sprites to their parent lightning events, then examine those discharges.
'This event was truly remarkable,' said Gaopeng Lu in an accompanying statement. 'By analyzing the parent lightning discharges, we discovered that the sprites were triggered by high-peak current positive cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a massive mesoscale convective system.'
A mesoscale event is a large complex of thunderstorms that include weather systems like lake-effect snow, squall lines, and tropical cyclones, depending on their location. In the case of the May 2022 event, the sprites formed inside an area stretching over 77,220 square miles from the Ganges Plain of northeast India to the Tibetan Plateau's southern foothills. It also featured the highest number of sprites ever recorded in South Asia, most of which featured a positive polarity with peak currents topping +50 kiloamperes (kA).
Lu and his team now believe thunderstorms in the Himalayas may produce some of Earth's 'most complex and intense upper-atmospheric electrical discharges' that are likely on par to those documented in the US Great Plains and off European coasts. The team's findings also have important implications for how experts can better characterize regional thunderstorms in the future, including how their physical and chemical attributes affect adjacent areas.
Their novel timestamping approach isn't limited to red sprite revelations, either. Any citizen scientist with the right know-how can now also use the study's methodology for their own meteorological work.

‘Long'-tailed creature gets caught in trap in India forest. It's a new species
Under a cover of darkness, an 'elusive' creature with a 'long' tail flew through a mountain forest in northern India — or tried to, at least. But something enveloped it and trapped it. Scientists checked their net trap and found the 'soft' animal. It turned out to be a new species. A team of researchers visited over a dozen sites in Uttarakhand and the Western Himalayas between 2017 and 2021 to survey wildlife. The region is 'one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth,' but sections of it remain 'insufficiently' studied, according to a study published June 5 in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa. During their surveys, researchers set up mist nets of various sizes and waited to see what flew into the traps, the study said. They also ventured into 'confined spaces like tunnels and caves' with butterfly nets to see what they could catch. 'Finally in 2021, a few days before the end of my last field season in Uttarakhand, Baseer Baniya returned from our nets with a Collared Scops-Owl bycatch in one cloth bag, and a bat that he couldn't identify in the other,' study co-author Rohit Chakravarty wrote in a June 5 Facebook post. 'As soon as I pulled the bat out of the bag,' Chakravarty knew it was an 'elusive' bat he'd seen twice before and had been searching for for years. Researchers took a closer look at the unfamiliar-looking bat, analyzed its DNA and realized they'd discovered a new species of mouse-eared bat: Myotis himalaicus, or the Himalayan long-tailed Myotis. Himalayan long–tailed Myotis bats are considered 'medium-sized,' reaching about 3.5 inches in length and weighing less than an ounce, the study said. They have 'delicate' feet and 'relatively long' thumbs ending in 'a strong but short claw.' Their heads have 'short' ears and 'rather delicate' teeth. A photo shows the new species' 'dense, soft and relatively long' hair. Overall, the mouse-eared bat's fur is 'dark brown' with some lighter hues mixed in and a paler golden-brown belly. Himalayan long–tailed Myotis bats were caught in net traps in 'a variety of forested habitats at elevations between' 4,900 to 7,500 feet and 'appears (to be) uncommon,' the study said. Much about the new species' lifestyle remains unknown. Researchers said they named the new species after the Himalayan mountains where it was first discovered. So far, Himalayan long–tailed Myotis bats have been found in Uttarakhand, India, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, locations nearly 500 miles apart. Uttarakhand is a province of northern India bordering Nepal and Tibet. The new species was identified by its DNA, tail length, body proportions, ears, skull shape, coloring and other subtle physical features, the study said. The research team included Uttam Saikia, Rohit Chakravarty, Gabor Csorba, Mostaque Ahmed Laskar and Manuel Ruedi. The team also surveyed about two dozen other bat species.

New face tattoo protects your brain from working too hard, scientists say
A newly developed face tattoo can see when the brain is working too hard – which it probably is, according to the researchers who developed it. The new electronic device sits on the face and is able to measure mental strain, without the bulky headgear that might traditionally be used. The researchers who created it suggest that the technology could be used to track the mental workload of air traffic controllers, trick drivers and others who are required to keep intense concentration for long periods of time. Everyone works best by balancing the intensity of their thinking, ensuring that they are neither overwhelmed or bored. But it can be difficult to find that balance, and current work depends largely on a long study taken by participants after they have completed a task. "Technology is developing faster than human evolution. Our brain capacity cannot keep up and can easily get overloaded," said Nanshu Lu, the study's author, from the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). 'There is an optimal mental workload for optimal performance, which differs from person to person.' Researchers hope the 'e-tattoo' can help. It works by analysing electrical activity from the brain and eye movements. Doing so usually requires a complex cap attached by dangling wires, but the tattoo is a lightweight battery pack and sensors that stick to the skin. The thin and stretchy nature of the sensors means that they can fit around face shape of the person wearing it. That could mean that the results are actually better than those complicated and bulky caps, the creators say. 'What's surprising is those caps, while having more sensors for different regions of the brain, never get a perfect signal because everyone's head shape is different,' said Lu. 'We measure participants' facial features to manufacture personalized e-tattoos to ensure that the sensors are always in the right location and receiving signals.' To test the system, researchers put the tattoo on six participants who were then set a memory challenge that got progressively harder. As it did so and their mental load increased, the researchers could see the effects: theta and delta brainwaves increased, suggesting they were experiencing cognitive demand, and alpha and beta activity increased in line with their fatigue. Researchers hope those same methods can be used to understand when the brain is struggling. It might also be able to predict when that is happening, by helping train a computer model that can predict the load of a given activity. The research is described in a new paper, 'A Wireless Forehead E-tattoo for Mental Workload Estimation', published in the journal Device. 'Black rocky hills have started to appear' - Experts witness the devastating toll of climate change on Mount Everest in eye-opening fly-by

In a recent fly-by, Nepali lawmakers and experts from across the globe witnessed a drastic reduction in snow coverage on Everest and other Himalayan peaks. The aerial survey was organized by Nepal's Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, to highlight the grave effects of climate change in the region. Alongside a reduction in snow coverage, passengers witnessed rapidly retreating glaciers as they passed multiple major Himalayan peaks, including Everest, Shishapangma, Makalu, and Lhotse. "In the past, wherever you looked, you would see snow-covered mountains. But now, black rocky hills have started to appear. The mountains that once looked completely white now appear as black peaks," Thakuri told the Asia News Network. "This mountain flight has shown the direct impact of climate change on the Himalayas. Foreign experts and guests, too, observed it first hand." The Himalayan region has experienced a dramatic drop in snowfall in recent years. This year alone, snow persistence (the time snow stays on the ground) in the Himalayas has reached a 23-year low. A report published in April by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) found "a significant decline in seasonal snow across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, with snow persistence 23.6% below normal - the lowest in 23 years". The reduction is seriously bad news for the two billion people who rely on Himalayan snowmelt to feed their water sources. The melting cycle fills 12 major river basins that provide water for multiple heavily populated countries like China, Pakistan, and Thailand. "This trend, now in its third consecutive year, threatens water security for nearly two billion people," explains author Sher Muhammad. "All twelve major river basins, including the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra, experienced below-average snow cover, with the Mekong and Salween basins losing over 50%." Climate change in the Himalayan region poses multiple other significant risks, including the destruction of invaluable habitats and dangerous climbing conditions for Everest hopefuls.
