India pips China as top smartphone supplier to US in Q2, 2025: Canalys

News1829-07-2025
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) India has emerged as the largest manufacturing hub for smartphones shipped into the US for the first time in Q2, 2025, as China's share shrunk amid tariff negotiations, according to Canalys.
The research from Canalys (now part of Omdia) revealed that United States smartphone shipments grew 1 per cent in the second quarter of the current calendar year as vendors continued to frontload device inventories amid tariff concerns.
The uncertain outcome of negotiations with China has accelerated supply chain reorientation, it said.
The share of US smartphone shipments assembled in China fell to 25 per cent in the April-June period, from 61 per cent a year earlier.
'Most of this decline has been picked up by India; the total volume of 'Made-in-India' smartphones grew 240 per cent year-on-year and now accounts for 44 per cent of smartphones imported into the US, up from only 13 per cent of smartphone shipments in Q2 2024," it said.
In Q2, iPhone shipments declined 11 per cent year-on-year to 13.3 million units, a correction from the 25 per cent growth in Q1, 2025, as per Canalys.
Samsung's shipments grew 38 per cent year-on-year to 8.3 million units.
Motorola continued its expansion in the US, growing two per cent to 3.2 million units. Google and TCL rounded off the top five, with Google growing 13 per cent to 0.8 million while TCL declined 23 per cent, shipping 0.7 million units.
'India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple's accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China," said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys.
Apple has scaled up its production capacity in India over the last several years as a part of its 'China Plus One' strategy and has opted to dedicate most of its export capacity in India to supply the US market so far in 2025, Chaurasia said.
'Apple has begun manufacturing and assembling Pro models of the iPhone 16 series in India, but is still dependent on established manufacturing bases in China for the scaled supply needed for Pro models in the US. Samsung and Motorola have also increased their share of US-targeted supply from India, although their shifts are significantly slower and smaller in scale than Apple's," Chaurasia said.
Motorola, similar to Apple, has its core manufacturing hub in China, whereas Samsung relies mainly upon producing its smartphones in Vietnam, Chaurasia noted. PTI MBI TRB

Swadeshi Jagran Manch launches campaign to boycott foreign goods, boost self-reliance

NEW DELHI: Amid escalating developments stemming from US-imposed tariffs on India, the RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has launched a nationwide campaign urging citizens to boycott foreign products and embrace indigenous (Swadeshi) goods. The campaign gained momentum on Sunday with a symbolic demonstration held under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign in Connaught Place and its surrounding areas. Its aim is to inspire a mass movement advocating the use of domestically produced goods. Dr Ashwani Mahajan, National Co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, in a statement welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on Swadeshi products, said that the organisation firmly believes that the nation's prosperity lies in self-reliance and the use of indigenous products. "In the current circumstances of global uncertainties, where global value chains, payment systems and global currencies are all being weaponised, the USA and other countries are becoming more and more protectionist and blocking global exports using tariff walls and unjust non-tariff barriers, goods are being dumped based on excess capacities by some countries, especially China, and conspiracy to eliminate our manufacturing, Swadeshi can be an important means of protecting our national interests," the RSS-affiliated SJM stated. With the launch of the 'Swadeshi Suraksha evam Swavalamban Abhiyaan' on 12 June 2025, in collaboration with a wide network of traders, industry associations and social organisations, the Swadeshi movement has received renewed impetus. The objective is to raise awareness throughout the country to support the vision of making India great again — what the Prime Minister refers to as 'MIGA'.

Railway budget for Karnataka jumped nearly ninefold under Modi: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday highlighted a sharp rise in budgetary allocation for Karnataka's railway projects since 2014, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the change. Addressing a gathering after Mr. Modi inaugurated the Yellow Line of Namma Metro here on Sunday, Mr. Vaishnaw said that Karnataka had been receiving only about ₹835 crore annually for railway works prior to 2014. 'Under Mr. Modi's leadership, this allocation has surged to ₹7,500 crore. At present, projects worth ₹54,000 crore are under way across the State,' he said. He added that 61 railway stations in the State are being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at upgrading passenger amenities and infrastructure. Devanahalli emerges as iPhone hub Shifting focus to the electronics sector, Mr. Vaishnaw, who is also the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, said that India's electronics manufacturing output had expanded sixfold to ₹12 lakh crore during this period, while exports had risen eightfold to over ₹3 lakh crore. 'A decade ago, the idea of India exporting electronics seemed far-fetched. Today, the country stands as the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with Bengaluru's Devanahalli emerging as a significant hub for iPhone production,' he said. According to the Minister, the Prime Minister's push towards 'Viksit Bharat 2047' has yielded nationwide benefits, including Karnataka. Bengaluru leads in AI Highlighting initiatives to make advanced technology accessible, especially artificial intelligence (AI), Mr. Vaishnaw said the India AI Mission provides 34,000 GPUs as a shared computing resource for innovators across the country. 'Bengaluru is one of the biggest users of this facility. The cost is less than one US dollar an hour, making it the world's most affordable common compute resource,' he said. He also pointed out to the efforts of Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam, which is developing an indigenous Large Language Model trained on extensive datasets in multiple Indian languages. This AI system, he said, is being designed to be free from biases and to reflect India's linguistic diversity.

FMCG distributors' body submits info to CCI in complaint against qcom firms

Distributors of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) have furnished additional information to the competition regulator to substantiate their allegations against quick-commerce players. According to sources in the know, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the regulatory watchdog, has asked quick-commerce players to submit answers to the allegations. Distributors, through the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), have said Blinkit owns the highest share of the market with 40-45 per cent, followed by Zepto with 25-30 per cent, and Swiggy Instamart with 20-25 per cent, according to documents seen by Business Standard. 'The dominance of these OPs (opposing parties; in this case, it is quick commerce companies), particularly Blinkit, creates a significant market power imbalance, enabling practices that contravene Section 4 of the Act (abuse of dominance) and predatory pricing.' The additional information said quick-commerce companies had arrangements by which they had bundled delivery service with loyalty programmes or subscription models, which encouraged customers to purchase additional services to access discounts or priority delivery. They cited the examples of Swiggy Instamart offering discounts through Swiggy One membership and Zomato giving promotions through its Zomato Gold membership. They also alleged quick-commerce companies had contracts with suppliers, and such deals often included prioritising stock allocations to their dark stores and reducing supplies to traditional trade. They also complained quick-commerce companies used location-based pricing, by which consumers would get different prices for the same product, depending on where they lived. And, according to them, consumers ordering through an iPhone are charged higher than android users. Frequent buyers are allegedly offered lower discounts whereas new customers get higher. Blinkit and Zepto, they said, offered discounts of 35-50 per cent, pricing products below what distributors offer. The AICPDF had filed a complaint with the CCI on behalf of its president, Dhairyashil Patil, against Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart in March. A source had earlier told Business Standard the CCI had asked the distributors' body for details on the relevant market share of each of the quick-commerce players in the FMCG sector. It had also sought clarity on whether the FMCG companies had any exclusive agreement for distribution. The CCI, once it receives a formal complaint, can order an investigation if it is satisfied with the information shared. It also has the option to seek comments from the parties named in the complaint or the informant who has filed the complaint before ordering an investigation. Last year, distributors' body wrote to the Ministry of Finance on fund utilisation and fund accumulation by quick-commerce companies and the deep discounting of goods on their platforms. In October last year, it had first written to the CCI on issues the traditional supply chain was facing owing to the rapid growth of quick commerce. The appointment of these platforms as direct distributors of FMCG items by several companies was one of the complaints. The federation had written to the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, which asked ecommerce and quick-commerce operators in the food business to ensure a minimum shelf life of 45 days before the expiry of products at the time of delivery to consumers.
