Peru's former president Ollanta Humala jailed for 15 years over money laundering - as his wife is granted asylum

Sky News16-04-2025

Peru's former president Ollanta Humala has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for money laundering.
His wife Nadine Heredia received the same punishment, but she has been granted asylum after entering the Brazilian embassy in Lima.
The couple were found guilty of receiving $3m (£2.3m) in illegal contributions from a Brazilian construction firm called Odebrecht.
That cash was used to finance Humala's presidential campaigns in 2006 and 2011, with his lawyer describing the sentence as "excessive".
Odebrecht previously admitted it had doled out bribes to governments across Latin America to build a vast empire, and it is currently going through bankruptcy.
Humala, a 62-year-old retired military officer, was jailed immediately - and the National Superior Court's verdict means he will be behind bars until 2039.
He is the third former Peruvian president to be imprisoned for corruption in the past two decades.
Alejandro Toledo received a 20-year jail term in 2024 after receiving $35m (£26m) in bribes in exchange for public works contracts.
A police base has been specially built to accommodate the country's jailed leaders - and it is likely Humala will serve his sentence there alongside Toledo.
His lawyers have vowed to appeal once the final ruling is issued later this month, and argue prosecutors failed to prove that the funds had come from an illegal source.
In 2019, former president Alan Garcia shot himself as police descended on his home to make an arrest - also for alleged corruption related to Odebrecht.
Former executives said the company had financed almost all presidential candidates in Peru for close to 30 years.
Fernando Quintalla, a resident who lives in Lima, said he was "totally displeased" that Humala's wife had been granted asylum.
He added: "I believe that the Peruvian population is really upset, extremely upset, with this string of (various) presidents - who since 2000 until now - have been plaguing us with an incredible corruption that has never been seen before in the country."

Massachusetts high school student should be released, US immigration judge rules

BOSTON, June 5 (Reuters) - A Massachusetts high school student who was arrested during the weekend by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on his way to volleyball practice was ordered released on a $2,000 bond on Thursday. A lawyer for Marcelo Gomes Da Silva said the decision by Immigration Judge Jenny Beverly in Chelmsford cleared the way for the 18-year-old to return home to his family in the Boston suburb of Milford and be released from immigration custody following his Saturday arrest during a traffic stop. The detention of the Brazilian, who arrived in the United States when he was 5 on a now-lapsed visa, prompted protests in Massachusetts as the incident became a flashpoint in Republican President Donald Trump's efforts to ramp up immigration arrests and deportations. Classmates gathered outside the immigration court celebrated after word of the judge's decision reached them. "We are thrilled that Marcelo soon will be back home with his family and community," Miriam Conrad, one of his lawyers, said in an email. "But this shows how pointless and cruel the arrest was in the first place." The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Milford High School junior had been driving his father's vehicle when he was arrested by ICE following a traffic stop, the agency's acting director, Todd Lyons, told reporters on Monday. ICE officials said Gomes was not the target of the investigation that led to his arrest, and that authorities instead were seeking his father, who has not been arrested. "He's in this country illegally, and we're not going to walk away from anybody," Lyons told reporters. In response to a lawsuit alleging he was unlawfully detained, U.S. District Judge George O'Toole issued an order, opens new tab barring immigration authorities from transferring Gomes out of Massachusetts without 48 hours' notice. The lawsuit said that Gomes entered the United States on a student visa in 2012. While his visa status has lapsed, the lawsuit said he intends to apply for asylum.

But some of them have openly supported terrorist organisations like the infamous Hezbollah. Brazilian protestor Thiago Avila attended the funeral of slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in February after he was assassinated last year. Avila hailed the Islamist militia leader as a "beloved" leader and a "martyr." The Brazilian also said he was "very honored" and "very happy" to attend the funeral of the terrorist group leader. Nasrallah "inspired people all over the world", according to Avila. On X, Avila said of Hezbollah's head was an "important figure", and that the funeral "amazed him". Nasrallah was the leader of Hezbollah - which is deemed a terrorist organisation in the UK and US among other countries. He helped train fighters from the terror group Hamas and other militias in Iraq and Yemen. Another sailor on board the so-called Freedom Flotilla is Yasemin Acar, from Berlin, who gained notoriety for hate speech against Jews. Death of Hamas chief Mohammad Sinwar could cause DECIMATED terror group to implode When Iran launched a terrifying missile strike on Israel, she reportedly danced with a pal in celebration as the rockets hit, according to Bild. Acar has also reportedly drawn slogans to target Israel, and at a demonstration she was heard racially abusing a white woman. She said: "You're a white person, you shouldn't tell us what to do." Scandalous politician Rima Hassan is also on board the ship to Gaza. She has accused Israel of being responsible for the October 7 deaths and kidnappings of Kfir and Ariel Bibas and their mum Shira in 2023. This is despite the fact that terror group Hamas executed the infamous attack where the three were taken and killed. The Swede left from Catania, Italy, on Sunday to take the Madleen across the Mediterranean. Also on board the ship is Irish Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham. She posted pictures of herself on social media with a Palestine flag and wearing a keffiyeh scarf. Israel is prepared to raid the ship, IDF spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said. Prosecutors in sexual assault case against Dimitri Payet 'seek dismissal due to lack of evidence' - with former West Ham star accused of forcing ex-mistress to 'film bizarre sex acts' and 'drink her own urine'

Prosecutors in the sexual and physical assault case against Dimitri Payet have requested for the complaint to be dismissed, reports in Brazil claim. The former West Ham and France star stands accused of 'physical and psychological violence' towards his former 'mistress', Brazilian lawyer Larissa Natalya Ferrari, who was allegedly forced to drink her own urine and lick the floor during a turbulent seven-month affair. Last month, Brazilian outlet G1 claimed to have obtained a document with details of the case in which the lawyer attested to suffering from borderline personality disorder, believing the former Rio de Janeiro-based Vasco da Gama star took advantage of her condition. 'Dimitri knew about my passion and psychological problems, using this against me,' she is reported to have said by G1. 'Dimitri convinced me to put my head in the trash, in the toilet, made me drink my own urine and other sexual bizarre acts.' However, according to RMC Sport via Brazilian outlet Extra, the prosecutor's office is now seeking to dismiss the complaint due to a lack of evidence required to charge the 38-year-old. The report states that the plaintiff's defence has appealed the decision. Last month reports claimed that Payet had denied 'physical and psychological violence' towards his 'mistress' in a statement to Brazilian police. The Frenchman was reportedly heard at the Women's Assistance Police Station where he admitted to having a relationship with Ferrari but insisted every act during their union was consensual. Furthermore, Payet, who left his wife of almost 20 years Ludivine and their four children back in his homeland during his time in Brazil, was alleged to have admitted to the acts but maintained that they were consensual and proposed by Ferrari. G1's report mentioned an encounter when Ferrari 'requested slaps during sexual intercourse' and as a result, developed marks on her body. The Frenchman also reportedly claimed that the two used wooden chairs during sexual intercourse, and that, due to Ferrari's light skin, any pressure would lead to marks. It followed Ferrari's impassioned public plea for 'justice', in a statement in which she claimed to have been 'humiliated' by the 38-cap former Les Blues star. 'I want justice because he abused my psychological vulnerability to gain sexual advantage,' she told AFP. 'He demanded proof of love from me, which consisted of humiliation. 'I recorded videos in which I drank my urine, drank water from the toilet bowl, and licked the floor. I'm a lawyer, I would never have made such serious complaints lightly.' It was claimed that Payet refused Ferrari's desire to continue this relationship in France, on the condition he pay her expenses, as his time in the country approached its end. According to the player, the lawyer's behaviour changed from then on, leading to her threatening to 'expose his secrets' if he did not respond within four hours of her birthday message. Payet's lawyer Sheila Lustoza told G1: 'It is regrettable that confidential records were leaked, but the case reveals with evidence something that is very clear: a woman exercising her freedom and will, as it should be, contrary to what has been publicly narrated up until now. The defense is confident that the truth that is proven by documents will demonstrate these facts.' Payet is widely regarded as one of West Ham's most talented players this century but left under a cloud to re-join Marseille after just 18 months in 2017. He stays at the Stade Velodrome for six-and-a-half years before moving to Brazil in 2023. In March, Larissa revealed that they had had a seven-month affair. She wrote in a lengthy statement: 'One thing I want to make clear is that it was never about money. There was no need for it. 'There's not much I can say because there's no explanation or anything to justify it. 'But one thing I want to make extremely clear is that it was never for money, not before, not now. In fact, the last time I went to Rio, I went by bus.' Larissa, who is a mother of two, also claimed that she only got physically involved with the midfielder following her divorce from her ex-husband.
