Tourists in Portuguese city to face huge fines for walking streets in swimwear
The party city in the southern Algarve region, a popular beach destination amongst British tourists, could start dishing out fines up to €1,500 (£1,250) for those who wander the city's streets in only a bikini or swimming trunks.
It would not be the first European city to introduce such rules, Barcelona, Malaga, Dubrovnik, Nice and Sorrento are among the spots which have similar rules in place.
With stunning beaches on the Portuguese coast, Albufeira is looking to boost its image after developing a reputation as one of the country's most popular party spots.
The proposals aim to preserve Albufeira as a 'multicultural, family-friendly and safe destination, which values its heritage and identity', the proposals read.
The city's authorities fear that excessive nudity in public throughout the city may do 'undesirable damage to the resident population and the image of the municipality as a tourist destination'.
Viral videos of eight British men dancing naked in a bar in Rua da Oura, the city's main party strip, prompted authorities to crack down on perceived anti-social behaviour by tourists.
José Rolo, president of Albufeira City Council, slammed the tourists and called for tighter nightlife control, according to The Portugal News. He promised a crackdown on bad tourist behaviour.
All sexual acts are also banned, the document says, as is camping, urinating, and drinking alcohol.
The rules include terraces which can be seen from public spaces - presumably including open beach bars - meaning that business operators who have permitted this behaviour may also be subject to significant fines.
The proposal will now go through a public consultation stage.

'I've been around British politics enough to have seen that happen, unfortunately, year after year. 'I want the Prime Minister to have a rest […] all we want to do is make sure that we're addressing these big issues, and that in this summer means making sure we get those security guarantees in Ukraine.'

A Briton who moved from the UK to Barcelona in 2017, has said that locals are frustrated by the influx of foreigners and that things have gotten worse since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic A British expat living in Barcelona has said that locals are becoming increasingly frustrated with the transformation of their neighbourhoods. Gemma Askham relocated to the popular Spanish city in 2017 due to her half-Spanish husband's work and has resided there ever since. Whilst the first six years were relatively uneventful, a surge in expats, coupled with anti-tourism sentiment fuelled by the Southern Europe Network Against Touristification (SET) movement, has altered the local area. Due to the influx of foreigners and tourists to Barcelona, the economy has shifted to cater to their preferences and requirements, rather than vice versa. Gemma noted that this dynamic between expats and their adopted country intensified following the Covid-19 pandemic. In an article for Grazia, she stated: "In 2023, a street pedestrianisation project aimed at improving community life was completed. But there are now eight English-named brunch cafes within two blocks." She also said that her 69-year-old neighbour, Toni Fontclara, is puzzled by people lining up at 11am for avocado on toast "a dish not from the region, served at an unheard-of eating hour for the Spanish, with a menu in a language he doesn't speak". Gemma isn't alone in noticing the changing face of Barcelona, which has seen a decrease in tourists following years of anti-tourism protests. Another Briton, also residing in Barcelona, revealed that certain parts of the city had become significantly quieter, as visitors are being deterred from travelling there. Laura, who has called the city home for two-and-a-half years, turned to social media to share footage of deserted streets earlier this month, capturing just how eerily silent they remained throughout the day. She said: "Day one of recording how quiet Barcelona is now the tourists don't feel welcome. The businesses must be feeling it The streets are so quiet now. These businesses last year used to wake me up in the morning. One has just recently been renovated." Laura's footage shows just how successful some of the demonstrations have been, though opinion remains split on their intentions. While some demonstrators have been demanding tourists leave, others maintain the protests stem from a wish to safeguard locals, rather than alienate visitors. Professor Marina Novelli explained: "Places like Lisbon, Venice and Barcelona are increasingly reduced to lifestyle backdrops where locals feel like strangers. The SET movement is about cross-border solidarity. Ultimately, it's not anti-tourist, it's pro-resident."

British tourist, 22, left seriously injured after falling from hotel balcony
Following a string of balcony-related falls in Ibiza, a 22-year-old British tourist has become the latest to be seriously injured after falling three storeys in the party resort of San Antonio. The unnamed man fell around 8 pm yesterday at the Marco Polo hotel, suffering chest and head injuries before being taken to Can Misses Hospital, according to the Civil Guard, who have launched an investigation. San Antonio has come under increased scrutiny this summer following several tourist deaths and hotel plunges. Dundee-born ice hockey star Gary Kelly, 19, became the fourth holidaymaker to die at the four-star Ibiza Rocks Hotel since April, when he fell from a third-floor balcony on July 21. On July 7, Ewan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, fell to his death at the same hotel. A 19-year-old Italian tourist plunged to her death on April 27 from a fourth-floor balcony at the hotel, owned by the Ibiza Rocks Group. Metro has contacted the Marco Polo hotel for a statement. Accidents involving British tourists in Ibiza have skyrocketed this summer. In late July, a British tourist was rushed to intensive care after smashing his head on the bottom of a pool. The Ibiza Rocks hotel, which has seen a spate of accidents this year, suspended its events after a third British tourist died there in July. A young footballer died from a suspected drug overdose this summer before he could even 'unpack his bags', his parents said. The family of 18-year-old Ryan Long, from Eastwood, Essex, said they 'can't wrap their heads' around what happened to their son. His parents believe he had a bad reaction from taking ecstasy, adding: 'We've sat our boys down many a time and told them not to take drugs. 'I just can't get my head around it. Not in a million years did I ever think he would do anything like this.' The island's ambulance service is under such strain from tourist-related incidents that it's on the brink of collapse. More Trending Major clubs are being urged to contract private ambulance services to keep up with the demand and ease the number of calls the local ambulance service responds to. Drug overdoses in clubs are common in Ibiza, but rose last year after pink cocaine, a new drug, was found on the island. In the series, she helped police uncover a bag of drugs thrown into bushes by a drug dealer and met a drug boss who said dealers can make £43,000 a day.
