ISKCON temple targeted in US: Over a dozen gunshots fired in suspected hate crime; India urges ‘prompt action'
Nearly 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the premises,targeting the building and nearby property during nighttime hours, as devotees and others were inside. It has caused thousands of dollars in damage, including the temple's intricately hand-carved arches.
'We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice,' the Consulate General of India in San Francisco said.
In a separate incident that took place earlier this year on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was desecrated days before a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, temple authorities said.
The official page of BAPS for the United States posted the details of the desecration on X. Its public officer said, 'In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail.'
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also raised it on X, connecting it to increasing anti-Hindu sentiments and stating that the vandalism came moments prior to the organised 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles.
While putting out other recent temple vandalism incidents since 2022 and demanding a probe, CoHNA said, 'Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close.'
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, was also attacked last year in an act of vandalism on the night of September 25. This incident occurred shortly after a similar attack on the BAPS temple in New York.

New Delhi: As preparations are underway for the annual Kanwar Yatra that will begin on July 11, a war of words has broken out over the temporary closure of meat shops along the yatra route and the mandatory display of the owner's name at food joints in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi. In UP, the Meerut district administration has mandated that all food establishments along the Kanwar Yatra route must display a QR code that allows pilgrims to scan and access detailed information about the food joint's ownership and compliance status as well as a list of food items and their prices. The Opposition has accused BJP-ruled states of religious appeasement and questioned the constitutional validity of such directives. In a sharp rebuttal, senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi hit out at the Opposition, accusing them of politicising religious festivals for communal gains. Speaking to IANS on Thursday in New Delhi, Naqvi said, "Is it compulsory to sell Biryani or chicken during the Kanwar Yatra? Some people will say that it is their constitutional right to sell Biryani but one must think of religious sentiments of other people as well." Naqvi urged all communities to maintain the sanctity and purity of such religious occasions and warned against injecting communal venom into matters of faith. 'It is our collective responsibility to ensure that social harmony is not disturbed. Unfortunately, some people want to add a communal flavour to every issue,' he said, without naming any political party. The issue has sparked debate, with Opposition leaders stating that selective enforcement of rules during Hindu festivals is unconstitutional and divisive. However, BJP leaders claim that respecting religious sentiments during limited periods is a matter of cultural sensitivity, not discrimination. Naqvi also took a dig at Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi doubting the Maharashtra election results and the electoral roll revision in Bihar, accusing him of undermining democratic institutions. "Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party has failed to digest the fact that they're being repeatedly thrown out of power via democratic elections. And, that is why they keep on raising questions on the credibility of the Election Commission and even doubt poll results, which is an insult to democracy," he said. He accused the Congress of suffering from a "power entitlement syndrome," saying the party believes that being in power is its birthright. 'This tantrum-driven politics is not only undemocratic but also dangerous for the country's democratic ethos,' Naqvi added. As the Kanwar Yatra nears and political temperatures rise, the debate underscores the growing intersection of religion and politics in India's public discourse.

Asaduddin Owaisi's "Mummy They Stole Chocolate" Dig At INDIA Bloc On Bihar Alliance
New Delhi: Reiterating that the AIMIM is open to a poll alliance with other Opposition parties in Bihar, party chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has taken a swipe at the INDIA bloc, and said, "no one should cry after the election and say, 'Mummy, they stole our chocolate'". In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Mr Owaisi was asked if the AIMIM planned to forge an alliance or join the Mahagathbandhan led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress. "Our state party chief, Akhtarul Imam, is trying. And I have asked him to try his best. No one should cry after the election, 'Mummy, mummy, they have stolen your chocolate'. If they are ready (for an alliance), I am ready. I don't want the BJP-NDA to return. But if they don't agree, we would have to contest the election, right?" he said. The 'chocolate' swipe appears to be aimed at Opposition parties that have often alleged that AIMIM is the BJP's "B-team" and enters the poll contest to split anti-BJP votes and benefit the BJP. The AIMIM leader said the party declared candidates for two seats, Bahadurganj and Dhaka, a month ago. "Our candidates are working hard. We will put up candidates in other seats too. They (Opposition parties) have to think (if they want the alliance or not). We will speed up our preparations. Our candidates will win, stay with the party and serve the people," Mr Owaisi said. Earlier, Mr Owaisi said he reached out to the Opposition bloc before the 2020 polls for an alliance, but nothing came of it. The AIMIM can play a key role in the Bihar polls. Mr Owaisi's support base in the minority community can potentially upset the Muslim-Yadav combination RJD relies on. Also, he has gained popularity over his public remarks in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and this can potentially benefit the AIMIM in this election. In the 2020 polls, AIMIM surprised by winning five of the 20 seats it contested. Four of its MLAs later joined RJD, but the poll performance still showed the party had gained political heft in Bihar. The AIMIM contesting separately has the potential to harm the Opposition alliance by splitting the minority vote, a key factor in the election. The BJP-JDU is looking to retain power in the upcoming polls, as smaller allies such as Chiraj Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) are posturing for a good seat-sharing deal. The RJD and the Congress, on the other hand, will be looking to return to power. Jan Suraaj, a political front led by former poll strategist Prashant Kishor, is also in the fight.
