Gunfight erupts in Kulgam forest as police foil terror plot in J&K's Anantnag

SRINAGAR: An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in the Akhal forest area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Friday evening, while police, in a separate operation, allegedly foiled a terror plot by arresting three youths with arms and ammunition in Anantnag.
A police official said a joint team of police, Army, and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the Akhal forest area of Devsar in south Kashmir's Kulgam district in the evening after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists.
He said that during the search operation, troops came under fire from militants hiding in the forest area.
The fire was returned by the troops, leading to an intermittent exchange of gunfire between the two sides.
Additional troops have been rushed to the area to tighten the siege and prevent the militants from escaping, a security official said.
He said security forces suspect the presence of a group of 3–4 militants in the area.
The encounter follows a recent gunfight in the forest area of Dachigam in Harwan on the outskirts of Srinagar, in which three Pakistani militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), who were allegedly involved in the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, were killed. Among the three killed was Suleman Shah, allegedly the mastermind of the attack.
Meanwhile, police claimed to have foiled a terror plot in south Kashmir's Anantnag district by arresting three persons and recovering arms and ammunition from them.
'A security naka was set up by police, CRPF and army near Panchayat Ghar Krad in Anantnag district. During the checking of the vehicle, an Alto 800 vehicle was signalled to stop. However, the driver attempted to flee but was intercepted by the naka party,' a police official said.
He said the driver and two persons travelling in the vehicle were arrested and, upon search of the vehicle and the suspects, arms and ammunition were recovered.
'The preliminary investigation suggests the trio had procured arms and ammunition from LeT and were likely planning to carry out a terror act in the region,' the police official said.

Pakistan: 7-year-old Baloch boy charged with terrorism for uploading video on YouTube

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) fiercely criticised the move, labelling it a 'grave violation of human rights' and a glaring misuse of anti-terrorism laws. read more In a shocking case that sparked widespread outrage, the Pakistani authorities registered a case of terrorism against a seven-year-old boy in Balochistan, the restive region riddled with an independence movement. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) fiercely criticised the development, labelling it a 'grave violation of human rights' and a glaring misuse of anti-terrorism laws. The development, from Turbat, has raised serious concerns about the state's handling of child rights and its legal obligations under national and international frameworks. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to the HRCP, the young boy was charged under terrorism clauses after uploading a YouTube video that featured a speech by human rights activist Gulzar Dost. 'In Turbat, Balochistan, registering an FIR under terrorism clauses against a 7-year-old minor is highly condemnable and a severe violation of human rights. This step is not only contrary to the spirit of the law but also a blatant violation of national and international obligations regarding the protection of children,' the HRCP stated. The organisation described the act of labelling the mere sharing of a video as terrorism as a stark example of the 'unbalanced use of power.' The HRCP has called for immediate action to address this alarming situation. It demanded the cancellation of what it called a 'baseless FIR,' along with protection for the child and his family from any form of harassment. Additionally, the commission urged authorities to provide training to law enforcement agencies on children's rights and to ensure the strict enforcement of child protection laws in cases involving minors. The rights body also appealed directly to the Government of Balochistan, the Ministry of Human Rights, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, and the Pakistan Commission for Human Rights, pressing them to take swift notice of the case and intervene. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This incident is not an isolated one. Just days earlier, on Wednesday, the HRCP raised alarm over the ongoing prosecution of other underage children under anti-terrorism laws in Pakistan's Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC). The commission expressed deep concern that, despite clear evidence of their minor status, these children continue to face trials in the ATC, a practice it deems both 'deeply troubling and incomprehensible.' 'It is deeply troubling and incomprehensible that, despite clear evidence of being minors, these children are being tried under anti-terrorism laws. Such judicial proceedings not only violate the Juvenile Justice System Act, 2018, of Pakistan, but also trample upon the fundamental human rights and constitutional protections afforded to children,' the HRCP stated. The organisation has called for an immediate halt to these trials and the transfer of such cases to Juvenile Courts, which are better equipped to handle cases involving minors in accordance with the law.

J&K: Operation Akhal enters Day 3; at least one terrorist killed during encounter with security forces

NEW DELHI: At least one terrorist was killed in an encounter after the security forces carried out Operation Akhal in Jammu and Kashmir 's Kulgam district. According to Chinar Corps of the Army, the operation, which started on Friday, continued overnight as troops responded with calibrated fire. "OP AKHAL, Kulgam. Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact," Chinar Corps wrote in a social media post on X. "One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far. Operation continues," the post added on X. The gunfight broke out on Friday evening in the Akhal Khulsan forest area after joint teams of the Army, J&K Police, and Special Operations Group launched a combing operation, based on intelligence inputs about the presence of three to five terrorists. According to officials, the identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorist are being ascertained. They added that the operation is still underway. Security forces have been carrying out aggressive operations against terrorists in the hinterland, while the Army has been on maximum alert guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Three hardcore Pakistani terrorists, including LeT commander Suleman Shah and his two associates Abu Hamza and Jibran, responsible for the Pahalgam attack, were killed on July 28 in the higher reaches of Dachigam National Park at the foot of the Mahadev mountain peak in the Harwan area of Srinagar. The Army code-named this operation Operation Mahadev. After the Pahalgam terror attack, the security forces have been carrying out anti-terrorist operations against gun-wielding terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), and sympathisers. Drug smugglers and drug peddlers are also on the radar of the security forces, as it is believed that the funds generated by hawala money rackets and drug smuggling are used to sustain terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The coordinated and information-backed operations of the joint forces are aimed at dismantling the ecosystem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, rather than focusing solely on the elimination of gun-wielding terrorists.

Pahalgam Attacker's Symbolic Funeral In PoK Confirms Pakistan's Link To Attack: Report

Last Updated: The event further confirmed Islamabad's hand in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. The symbolic funeral (Janaza-Ghaib) for Tahir Habib (Jibran), one of the Pahalgam terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev in Jammu and Kashmir, was recently held in his native village of Khai Gala in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), reported The Times of India. The event further confirmed Islamabad's hand in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. Footage posted on Telegram shows villagers, including elderly locals, gathering for final prayers in memory of Habib, a former Pakistani soldier and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative. Tahir, designated as a Category 'A' terrorist, had been a key target for Indian security agencies due to his role in cross-border militancy. His death, along with two others in Srinagar last week in Operation Mahadev, marked a significant success for Indian forces. However, the ceremony took an unexpected turn when local Lashkar commander Rizwan Hanif attempted to attend. According to eyewitnesses, the family rejected the presence of LeT operatives, but Hanif persisted, resulting in a tense exchange. 'Lashkar operatives threatened mourners with a gun, sparking outrage among villagers. The residents of Khai Gala, who have long been wary of radicalisation, are now planning a public boycott to oppose terror recruitment," a source familiar with the incident said. The tensions surrounding Habib's funeral reflect not just local resentment against terror groups, but also the broader reach of India's retaliatory operations like Operation Sindoor, aimed at dismantling cross-border terror networks in the aftermath of the Pahalgam massacre. Under 'Operation Mahadev,' Indian forces on July 28 neutralised three Pakistani terrorists in the Lidwas forest near Harwan, on the outskirts of Srinagar. According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the three were behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Shah identified one of the slain terrorists as Suleiman, the key planner of the attack. The others were named Afghan and Jibran (Tahir Habib) — all senior operatives of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
