Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 20 - Ollie Taylor (1970-71)

USA Today23-06-2025
The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans".
Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today.
To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise's jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 21st of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 20, which has has had a total of 28 players wear the number in the history of the team.
The fifth of those players wearing No. 20 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, guard alum Ollie Taylor. After ending his college career at Houston, Taylor was picked up with the 189th overall selection (there were many more rounds in that era of the draft) of the 1970 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The New Yorker would play the first two seasons of his pro career with New York, however, electing to play in the ABA instead. That ended when he was drafted by the (defunct) San Diego Conquistadors in the 1972 ABA expansion draft. He would return to New York in 1973 for eight more games after being cut by San Diego, and was cut again after.
During his time suiting up for the Nets, Taylor wore only jersey Nos. 20 and 22 and put up 9.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

Peterson dominates Nationals, Vientos homers again as Mets win 8-1

David Peterson dominated the Nationals again, Mark Vientos homered for the second consecutive game and the New York Mets pounded Washington 8-1 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory. Peterson (8-5), who blanked the Nats on June 11 in New York for his first career shutout, extended his scoreless streak against Washington to 25 innings dating to last season. He finally allowed a run when Dylan Crews led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a double-play grounder. The only Mets starter who has reliably pitched deep into games, Peterson finished the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Juan Soto hit his 31st homer, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Baty also went deep for the Mets, who may be breaking out of a funk that began in late July. New York had lost 14 of 16 before this run of three wins in three states that began Saturday at Citi Field and continued Sunday night at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Vientos hit a three-run homer. "We need him now," manager Carlos Mendoza said before the game of Vientos, who hit 27 homers in 111 games last year but has seen sporadic playing time lately. Tuesday's two-run shot off Jake Irvin (8-8) was his ninth longball of the season. McNeil hit a two-run double during the Mets' five-run third against Irvin and went deep in the ninth off Jackson Rutledge. Peterson faced the minimum through five innings and had his first stress in the sixth, allowing a leadoff double to Andrés Chaparro and a one-out single to Jacob Young. The All-Star lefty then struck out James Wood and retired CJ Abrams on a fly to center. Peterson worked six or more innings for the 16th time. Clay Holmes (seven) has the next-most such outings on the Mets. Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.35 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Nationals' Brad Lord (3-6, 3.26) on Wednesday night.

Nets' Michael Porter Jr. ranked 13th-best SF prior to 2025-26 season

Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. is looking to expand on what he can do on the basketball court following the offseason trade that sent him from the Denver Nuggets to the Nets. Brooklyn traded forward Cam Johnson to the Nuggets in exchange for Porter and a 2032 first-round pick, but Porter could potentially improve on his standing amongst his position. "27-year-old forward Michael Porter Jr. has a fun offensive game, as he is never shy to shoot tough shots from anywhere on the floor, while possessing excellent size at 6-foot-10 to knock down shots even over tight contests," HoopsHype's Frank Urbina wrote when explaining Porter being ranked as the 13th-best small forward heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. Porter is in position to potentially be the primary scoring option for the Nets. "Now set to be arguably the top offensive option on a young Brooklyn Nets team, it'll be fascinating to find out what type of numbers Porter Jr. can put up with even more of a green light to shoot it," Urbina continued. "Considering he was at 18-plus points per game while sharing the floor with Jokic and Jamal Murray, don't be surprised if Porter Jr. is at well over 20 points per game in 2025-26, as few players of his size have his shooting ability and confidence on offense." Porter, 27, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 50.4% from the field and 39.5% from three-point land. With Porter presumably taking Johnson's place in the starting lineup, the former Missouri Tiger is hoping to provide his usual offensive scoring punch while expanding on his game that he felt "plateaued" during his time in Denver. In the seven seasons that Porter has been with the Nuggets, he has played behind center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray so it makes sense that he feels that he could bring more to the floor for a team. Under head coach Jordi Fernandez, Brooklyn will be looking for Porter to bring his scoring prowess to the hardwood while Fernandez allows Porter to see what else he can do within the established structure. Awkward - Women's Tennis Star Refuses Postgame Hug After Match

Awkward - Women's Tennis Star Refuses Postgame Hug After Match originally appeared on The Spun. The 2025 US Open's revamped mixed doubles tournament kicked off this Tuesday with a star-studded lineup that included the team of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu. There was plenty of hype surrounding Alcaraz and Raducanu despite their lack of chemistry on the court. Alcaraz, 22, has been the talk of the tennis world for the past few years. The world No. 2 is already a five-time Grand Slam champion and is roughly 24 hours removed from winning the Cincinnati Masters. Raducanu, on the other hand, is slowly but surely climbing back up the WTA rankings. During the opening round of the mixed doubles tournament, Alcaraz and Raducanu squared off against Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula. They were no match for them, which makes sense considering Pegula was once the No. 1 doubles player in the world. While this Tuesday's match provided plenty of fireworks, it was Raducanu's post-match interaction with Draper that grabbed everyone's attention. Fans noticed that Raducanu didn't hug Draper after the match was over. It wouldn't have looked that awkward if Alcaraz had the same exchange with Pegula. However, they had a very friendly embrace at the net. Raducanu's interaction with Draper sparks speculation. "This can confirm they were a thing," one fan wrote on X. "Why would she hug him? The way he was acting and targeting her all match was so stupid. I'm glad she ignored," a second fan commented. "Oh no the Brits are fighting," a third fan said. "How ridiculous, she's so childish," another fan declared. With the win on Tuesday afternoon, Draper and Pegula secured a second-round match against Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev. As for Alcaraz and Raducanu, they'll now get ready for the US Open's main draw. The first round will begin on Sunday afternoon. Alcaraz has the second-best odds (+145) to win the US Open. He only trails the reigning champion, Jannik Sinner (+110). Moving over to the women's bracket, Raducanu is currently at +4000 to win it all. If she's going to recapture the magic that made her champion in 2021, she'll need to take down some of the top players in the world, such as Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
