The Tanjong Kapor Assemblyman, who defected from Warisan, said as a people's representative under the party president's leadership, support and compliance are the best approach.

Held at the Sabah Golf and Country Club in Bukit Padang, the session saw strong participation, with 78 members in attendance. A total of 29 committee members were elected unopposed for the 2025–2028 term, reflecting unity and trust within the Chamber. The new committee will convene within two weeks to finalise leadership roles in accordance with SCCC's constitution. 'I am humbled by our members' trust. We will continue strengthening Sabah's economic ties, both regionally and globally,' said Frankie, expressing gratitude for the renewed mandate. Key leaders, including Brett Chua, Datuk Jonathan Koh and Datuk Simon Teoh, were among the newly elected committee members. In a major development, SCCC confirmed a business delegation to Zhengzhou, China, from Sept 24–28, for the International Business and Trade Expo. Austrian daily under fire after Clint Eastwood slams ‘phony' interview

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: In the interview, which was picked up widely by American media over the weekend, Eastwood criticises a lack of fresh ideas in the current film industry as 'we live in an era of remakes and franchises'. - AFP pic VIENNA: An Austrian newspaper came under fire Tuesday after Hollywood star Clint Eastwood said an alleged interview with him published by the paper to mark his 95th birthday was 'entirely phony'. The row was sparked by a purported interview with the Oscar-winning actor and director carried by the German-language Kurier newspaper Friday. In the interview, which was picked up widely by American media over the weekend, Eastwood criticises a lack of fresh ideas in the current film industry as 'we live in an era of remakes and franchises'. 'I long for the good old days when screenwriters wrote films like 'Casablanca' in small bungalows on the studio lot. When everyone had a new idea,' he was quoted as saying. 'My philosophy is, do something new or stay at home,' it adds. In a statement to Deadline magazine published Monday, Eastwood said 'I thought I would set the record straight'. 'I can confirm I've turned 95. I can also confirm that I never gave an interview to an Austrian publication called Kurier, or any other writer in recent weeks, and that the interview is entirely phony,' he added. On Tuesday evening, the editorial team of the Vienna-based Kurier said its freelancer Elisabeth Sereda had compiled the interview by citing from 'a total of 18' round table conversations with Eastwood. But since the article was published as an interview and not as a profile, the daily said it would cut ties with the author. 'Even though no quotes have been fabricated, the interviews are documented and the allegations of falsification can be refuted, we will not be working with the author in the future because transparency and our strict editorial standards are paramount to us,' Kurier said in a statement published on its website. The newspaper had recently published interviews by Sereda with celebrities such as Jude Law and Elton John. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Water woe: Minister backs UMS Vice-Chancellor

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: 'I fully support the statement by the UMS Vice-Chancellor (right). The university has been clear and transparent about the real situation on the ground. It is not fair to simply place the blame on them,' Mustapha (left) said. Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has come out in support of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), saying it is unfair to place the blame for the university's water crisis solely on its administration. His comments follow a strongly-worded statement by UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur, who recently criticised the Sabah Water Department for claiming that the R13 tank, which supplies water to UMS, had 'never been empty.' Kasim had said such remarks were misleading and insulted the university community. 'I fully support the statement by the UMS Vice-Chancellor. The university has been clear and transparent about the real situation on the ground. It is not fair to simply place the blame on them,' Mustapha said when contacted, Tuesday. He said the R13 tank belongs to the Sabah Water Department and serves not just UMS, but also nearby areas. 'For UMS alone, they require five million litres of water daily. We know there was a pump breakdown, but it was repaired quickly. Still, the water problem has been going on for a long time,' he said. Mustapha urged both UMS and the state water authorities to work more closely together to find a lasting solution. 'I propose that UMS and the Sabah Water Department hold regular meetings to resolve this issue. It won't be solved if we continue with the blaming game,' he said. He added that student feedback and unrest should be treated as a serious indicator of the situation. 'The scale of complaints from students — leading to demonstrations — shows how serious the problem is. If this issue continues, it means we've failed to address it in a rational and effective way,' Mustapha said. His remarks came days after UMS publicly defended its handling of the crisis, with Kasim outlining the challenges of drawing enough water from the state-run R13 tank, especially as the university sits on higher ground. UMS has a daily demand of between 3.5 and 5 million litres and caters to over 23,000 people each day. Despite being located on campus grounds, the R13 tank primarily serves other nearby users, and UMS can only begin pumping when the tank level exceeds 0.5 metres — a threshold that is rarely met. Kasim had also criticised attempts to blame the university's pumping system, saying all three pumps were in working order and had been maintained. The prolonged crisis has sparked student anger, with student movement Suara Mahasiswa UMS recently calling on the university to take legal action against the Water Department and demanding RM100 million in damages. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
